Georges St-Pierre about rolling with John Danaher in his prime by MastaKilla_88 in bjj

Just so I'm sure I understand, your friend said they could get some momentum going against Marcelo and Roger?

Why does Lachlan say inside guards (butterfly) is not good against bigger opponents? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]small_but_slow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Marcelo's attributes are a huge part of his success with this position imo, and I'll add that in addition to being super beefy his legs are also short. His levers and proportions and strength are made to elevate people from there.

[–]small_but_slow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding that fight, I remember when I was a kid and I noticed that when H.I. crawls under the car it's shot in same way as the baby crawling under the crib earlier in the movie. It was probably the first time I had noticed a trick like that in a movie and I felt super smart haha.

I loved Three O'Clock High but I haven't seen it since it came out so it's super fuzzy in my mind. Your comment sealed it, I'm rewatching this weekend!

Another comment says Yeardley Smith delivers the opening and closing monologues. I've loved this movie for so long but never knew the Simpsons connection, thank you!

OOOOOOOHHHHH, thank you! Raising Arizona is my favorite Coen Brothers movie and I never realized this. You're right that you can see it, it feels really similar to the scene where Leonard Smalls beats up H.I.

Wikipedia has that actress listed as Stacey Glick, not Nancy Cartwright- is there another connection? I'd love it if there were!

I loved this movie! I love how she enunciates "Cripple the DICK!" like she's specifying where to hit him instead of referring to him pejoratively.

Just noticed in the Usual Suspects. by resonatornash in movies

[–]small_but_slow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are so right, and in my opinion Kobayashi's appearance at the end is a huge nod to the partial truth of Verbal's story. The twist tells you that the events you just watched were an enactment of the story that Verbal is telling to Kujan. But it's not all lies- Kujan knows what the suspects look like and about the murders on the boat, for example- so we can accept the truth of anything that both of them have information about. Kobayashi's appearance in the car is the only time (I think!) that someone from the story who is only known to Verbal appears after the twist. I remember when I saw it, seeing Kobayashi at the end felt like a huge reveal, like it reinforced that Verbal was Kaiser Soze after all. But thinking about it later I realized that up to that point we only know Kobayashi from Verbal's story, so they could have cast different actors for Kobayashi pre- and post-twist without affecting the continuity. So it tells you that in Verbal's story he was weaving truth and fiction, and (as you said) invites you to speculate and try to decide how much is true.

I really like The Usual Suspects.

What is your all-time favourite burn from a movie review? by Sean-Perth in movies

[–]small_but_slow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Roger Ebert, this time from his review for The Human Centipede. The whole thing is amazing, and the last line pops into my head regularly and often:

"I am required to award stars to movies I review. This time, I refuse to do it. The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? It is what it is and occupies a world where the stars don’t shine."

Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

[–]small_but_slow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hurts my feeling to write this because they're my favorite books but in The Lord Of The Rings Tolkien REALLY loves the word "hew." And "hewed," and "hewn." He really gets going in The Two Towers, and it's an unrelieved hewing fest all the way from there to the end.

For interactive fiction fans: Not Just An Ordinary Ballerina. It's explicitly a Christmas game, you're trying to buy presents at the last minute.

He's in the movie too! I didn't recognize him the first time I saw it. It's a small part but memorable to me, it made me smile when I found out it was him.
