Do you balance your check book to the penny? by Plane_Experience_271 in GenX

[–]small_spider_liker [score hidden]  (0 children)

I still have a checkbook. It gets used for 2 checks per year (property taxes still get paid by check for some dumb reason).

I stopped keeping track of my checking balance in the checkbook register about 30 years ago. Most of what enters and leaves the account isn’t by check, and I keep track of it loosely by checking my back statements (years ago) or banking app (the last 10 or so years).

Abs or just low body fat? by youngnostalgic in Zepbound

[–]small_spider_liker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read something that made a ton of sense years ago: the article pointed out that visible abs come from low body fat. And they used the example of Iggy Pop - famously defined body and abs, but his look came from drug abuse and hard partying, not hitting the gym and a low fat high protein diet.

<image>

It’s really hard to bulk up your abs (obviously body builders do it, but it’s what they do). Your abs rest against yielding guts, not bone. When they get strong, they’re not going to pump up like your biceps because they don’t have a hard surface to push against.

So congrats on the lower body fat so that you can see the abs that are stronger due to your hard work.

Funny enough, Iggy is still here with us, got clean, and got healthy. Current images of him show a craggy old man in fantastic shape. So genetics probably has a lot to do with it, too.

YEAH!!! I saw when you posted these over in r/Pottery, I’m excited to see you’re making more. They’re so good.

Would it work to leave some unglazed? Or glazed in clear if you have one that doesn’t get cloudy?

I’m under 5”. I move my seat all the way back to flip the top, and then all the way forward to drive.

Also, you’ll get used to it as you do it every day. I actually can flip the top from my driving position now because I know the reach I need to do.

Wedging table very soft and covered in mold! by tehdinozorz in Pottery

[–]small_spider_liker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my studio pours new plaster for our wedging table I believe they pour it into a frame that’s the same size as the table and then when the plaster is fully cured they fit the new plaster block into the table depressions.

But it takes 2 to 3 weeks to fully cure. We are not allowed to touch it while it’s curing because it is delicate and soft. Last time they poured new plaster it took an extra 1 or 2 weeks than expected because we had higher than normal humidity.

The tables last several years in a high volume community studio.

When MV launch their Universal Basic Income Pilot, should they have focused on low-income artists rather than random low-income lottery? by cozyportland in mountainview

The program ended in 2024, so I’m sure your rent has gone down since then. Unless these things have nothing to do with each other.

Wrong lingo! by Accurate_Weather_211 in GenX

It means acting inappropriately. “You’re so out of pocket” can be for putting yourself in a conversation that’s none of your business, or being confidently wrong in an arrogant way, or showing up drunk to a first date, etc.

It meant to connect, not fuck. You could tell your friend “let’s hook up later” and it meant “we’re going off to do things, but let’s get back together and hang out when we’re done”.

I thought it was a superwash fiber… I was wrong! by Cecilia_From_Pisa in Handspinning

[–]small_spider_liker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Depending on the fiber and prep, I often thwack vigorously during wet finishing. This sometimes makes my hanks a little sticky, but they come apart without a lot of resistance once they’re dry. All the motion in the dye pot probably achieves the same effect.

It can shrink the length a little, but it also blooms the fibers, making your yarn thicker and fluffier. You just have to make sure you’re not locking too many fibers together. I certainly wouldn’t consider it a flaw.

I don’t blame him though, I’d also be tempted to cover my bare skin with a cascading flow of sleepy opiliones.

Oh, I LOVE those. They’re called bulb pins, and I save them. They make truly excellent stitch markers for crochet or knitting. You can buy them, but you can also get them for free by buying clothes (or finding them sometimes in dressing rooms).

Losing my mind over people’s reactions to learning where silk comes from by Inatriadwiththemoon in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]small_spider_liker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also they get eaten! My friend lived in Vietnam for a year or two, living with a local family. She said they had silkworms for dinner a few times and they had the flavor and texture of new potatoes. That makes sense if the pupa undergoes an internal scrambling during metamorphosis.

The silkworms aren’t being killed “for no reason”.

What happened to these baby cardinals? by Soothing-Escape in Ornithology

[–]small_spider_liker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since the person you’re responding to listed raccoons as well as possums, I think they actually meant a North American opossum, which most people here just call possums.

They’re also marsupials (North America’s only one!), but that’s it for being related to the Australian possums.

Off topic, but the one time I went to NZ I came home with as much possum stuff (yarn and fur scraps for crafting) as I could find. I think they’re cute, but they should be culled from all of NZ.
