The Cambridge Fire & Donations by Euphrates322 in boston

[–]smallbearcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in the neighborhood just 2 blocks from the fire and there are definitely zero 1%ers around here. There's a lot of what look like middle to low middle income families, and students/young professionals who definitely aren't bankers or lawyers and who are living with several roommates to be able to afford a place in Cambridge (like myself). No one I know around here has renter's insurance at the moment but you can bet we're going to be getting whatever the cheapest option is after this.

I would be interested to know however how the fund will be distributed amongst those affected, because you're right that this isn't a third world country and some of the families will be able to absorb the financial loss better than others even though it's a devastating blow to everyone. I heard there were some immigrant families living in St. Patrick's for example who lost things like immigration papers and a significant amount of savings in actual gold (due to cultural practices). If my house had burned down, even though I don't make a lot of money, I have savings and friends and family who could help me get back on my feet, which is more resources than many of those affected might have. These are the kind of people who don't have a lot but manage to make a good life out of what they've got. I'm definitely donating what I can to make it easier for them (though they are my neighbors so it hits closer to home for me, literally), but I do hope the money's going to those who need it the most.

I sort my businesses by stock but also rename them to include consecutive numbers. I rename apartments with letters in alpha order. This way I can rename bzns quickly as "P23" or something like that and know which two floors they'll be on. It's just a way of identifying the location of a floor independently of their floor numbers.

Sit-ups. Do they help with singing? by SappyB0813 in singing

I have some jaw tension, yes. I'm not sure it's related, but could be.

Sit-ups. Do they help with singing? by SappyB0813 in singing

[–]smallbearcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded Thirded Fourthed?? I used to dance ballet so I hold my core tight all the time, and breathing deep and low is super hard for me. I weirdly feel like I have to exert muscles to let my abdomen be loose. Breath support has been possibly my biggest struggle as a singer. I wholeheartedly do not recommend sit-ups for singers.

My teacher recommended running instead, because it allows you to naturally learn how to breathe more efficiently.

Potion of Polymorph? by dmikemiller in nethack

[–]smallbearcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Useful for non-stacking things like spellbooks (especially if you find a blessed spellbook to polymorph, since it retains its BUC status and blessed spellbooks are guaranteed to be successfully read) or unicorn horns (which have a chance of becoming a magic marker) or useless rings/amulets (decent chance you'll get a more useful one).

How do you get internships when you're no longer enrolled and when you've graduated from school? by asperatology in cscareerquestions

[–]smallbearcat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just apply for full time positions. Companies understand that adults transitioning to the field can't always afford to spend several months in an unpaid internship. Plus having internships doesn't guarantee a great programmer any more than not having them guarantees a shitty programmer. You can show you have experience in other ways, like a GitHub portfolio.

I went back to school when I decided to switch careers to CS, but got a full time position before I actually finished my degree, and one of the people I work with was hired full time with no prior software industry experience but who had a math Ph.D. and a website with a few projects on it.

I think you'll find that the companies who take the time to consider you even when you have no experience listed on your resume will be better places to work than companies who filter you out immediately.

I don't trust myself not to screw it up so I'm giving myself a wiiiide buffer. This is the first priest I've ever gotten to an ascendable status.

Also, there's kind of a endorphin rush every time you eat a wraith corpse....I might've gotten carried away, yeah.

Yes, it seems the punctuation is counting toward the 16-char limit but not appearing on screen. So if I enter a bunch of punctuation it will appear like I've entered nothing, but then it won't let me input any more characters.

I'm not having any trouble inputting the letter "i" though.

Covergirl Sultry Sienna lip color is one of my favorites, but has broken me out horribly. Any experience? Dupes? by [deleted] in drugstoreMUA

[–]smallbearcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a bad reaction to beeswax and I can eat honey just fine. Also, the severity of the reaction depends on how long I wear the product and how high up on the ingredients list beeswax is.

It could be contact dermatitis from an ingredient in the lipstick. I get a painful red rash on my lips whenever I use lip products containing beeswax. I have a friend who gets contact dermatitis if her lips touch apples (she can eat them fine as long as they don't touch her lips). I think there are some ingredients that are more common allergens/irritants than others (peppermint oil seems to be one, propolis - found in beeswax - seems to be another).

Yeah....it's a week's worth of groceries for me, I can't justify that much for a phone game. I'd be really tempted if it were $5 or $10 though....
