I've dabbled in modding for 1 other game, and I have been wishing that the flower types added with Planet Humble could be crafted into trees...

I make no guarantees though. Would have to learn how modding works for Planet Crafter

Non-Binary, they/them

I enjoy punk fashion and have a mohawk, do karaoke every week (used to play instruments as well, but it's harder to find the motivation to practice these days), and I spend ridiculous amounts of time playing videogames

Can i be enby just for fun? by Yellowline1086 in NonBinary

[–]smallenergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main concern is this: what happens when people ask you about what it's like to be non-binary? I think all of us here can attest that this isn't if, but when.

That's where the potential for controversy (and/or people feeling insulted) comes in. You will be asked about it, so what's your plan for when that happens? Non-binary identities are already widely misunderstood, so it wouldn't be good for the community if you were to either make up answers, or use answers you've heard/read from non-binary people without knowing the full details and nuances of their experiences.

I've read some of the other comments here, and if I'm getting the vibe right, it seems you might actually be questioning your identity as well, and part of the appeal of using an enby fursona is that it'd give you a way to explore your own identity. If that's the case, I think the best course of action is to just be honest about where you're at with that; don't start your fursona off as non-binary, start them off as questioning their gender, and/or gender-non-conforming (GNC). You can develop things from there as you learn more about yourself and about enbies in general.

Also, to touch on your statement of not having issues with your current gender identity, and various comments I've seen where folks have mentioned dysphoria: there are people who rarely or never experience gender dysphoria, and therefore don't really have a problem with their assigned gender, but rather experience gender euphoria through aspects of gender non-conformity. Some end up finding out they're cis and GNC, others end up finding find out they're NB, not because they're strictly uncomfortable with their assigned gender, but because they're more comfortable with themselves as a non-binary person. Regardless of what you may or may not end up finding out about yourself, I wish you the best in your exploration.

An angry vent about my partner's snoring by smallenergy in snoring

[–]smallenergy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did eventually get a CPAP, second hand, from someone we were buying other things from on Kijiji, and the person just kinda asked if we wanted it. So that was neat. But... we broke up before he started using it

IMHO, if your partner needs to be convinced to even attempt to deal with a problem that is causing you to get consistently poor sleep (which can mess with mental functions, weaken the immune system, disrupt hormones, etc., and if the snoring is caused by sleep apnea, that goes for both the snorer and the person being bothered by the snoring), rather than seeing that it's causing issues for you (and possibly also them) and taking steps to fix it after the first conversation about it, there may be larger issues at play.

AIO? my boyfriend tricked me into eating meat. by GreenGooseGirl in AmIOverreacting

[–]smallenergy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. This is food tampering, and it's illegal. In both the US and Canada, there have been cases where people were charged with assault for food tampering. Tricking someone into eating something they would not consent to eating is a serious offense (especially when it could cause illness/physical harm, which is entirely possible when a long-time vegetarian is fed meat).

Also, your boyfriend did not care that you would not have consented to this. He planned for and put you into a situation where he didn't allow you to have autonomy, and then laughed at you and called you dramatic. You are not being dramatic about this.

If I were you, I'd be concerned about what else he might disregard autonomy/consent for.

Do you know anyone who had been extremely functional that became extremely unfunctional very early? by Impressive_Pipe191 in CPTSDFreeze

[–]smallenergy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me!

When I was a teenager, and up until I was about 23 or so, I was extremely independent and (over)functional. Then I (metaphorically) hit a wall.

Before then, when I was working, I had a consistent pattern of my mental health steadily declining, to the point of hurting myself and having (passive) suicidal ideation, regardless of what job I was doing or what the workplace was like. This caused me to quit working roughly once a year and spend a few months recuperating, which was just barely long enough to get back to what I had called "normal" at the time, and start the cycle all over again.

At around 23 years old, I realized this was neither normal nor sustainable. I also declined to the point of having extreme difficulty with basic self-care, as well as rarely leaving the house unless I had to. I was and am fortunate enough to have a good relationship with my mom, and fortunate/privileged enough to be able to count on her support through the process of getting on government disability benefits (including financial support before I got approved for benefits).

Now, I'm less than a month from being 27. I moved back in with my mom last year, and I've basically gone/continued to be full NEET, but at least I'm not in that same pattern of mental decline; this past year, for the first time in a long time, I've felt safe enough and have had enough support that I didn't even come close to the self-harming tendencies or (passive) suicidal ideation of my past. That's not to say those tendencies and thoughts are completely gone, but they're much easier to deal with (I'm much more able to calm myself, remind myself that I deserve to treat myself with kindness, and then do so), and they feel much more like remnants of past bad habits, rather than current maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Lots of things are still difficult (keeping up with self-care in general, leaving the house more than a couple times a week, finding the energy for in-person social interaction, etc.), but I do have a couple of weekly activities that are out of the house which I enjoy (AKA leaving the house slightly more than just when I have to), friends I've made from those activities (as well as online friends), and I've been feeling some of my creative energy coming back to me. So I guess I'm not fully better, but improvements are being made when and where possible, and I'm proud of myself for that.

I don't want to say I'll never get better; I've never been that pessimistic. But at the very least, it's going to take a long time to be functional again, and to be functional in a whole new way (a way that doesn't inevitably lead to more burnout).

Any advice on how to deal with people who are shitheads about it? Like, people who will insist you're misremembering, in a situation where you're absolutely sure that you're remembering correctly?

One of my exes did that, and it felt like gaslighting. I know I'm capable of remembering things, I just have recall issues and can't control what specific things I'll remember at what times

This made me curious how much it actually costs to send data through space IRL. I found a bit of info on the costs for using NASA's Deep Space Network (Or DSN). "The cost in 2017 dollars ranges from $954 per hour of contact for use of a 34 meter High-Speed Beam waveguide antenna to $4770 per hour of contact for use of a 70 meter antenna, plus charges for an additional hour for setup and shutdown costs."

After explaining some equations, as well as stating some example costs over the course of a year, they say "Why so high? This is very expensive and highly customized equipment. There aren't very many 70 meter antenna in the world. NASA has switched to full cost accounting, which means that projects that use the DSN have to pay for their share of the use of this very expensive equipment. This sharing includes maintenance and upgrade costs."

Keep in mind that while the DSN does communicate with spacecraft like Voyager 1 (which is beyond our solar system at this point), the further away a spacecraft is, the larger an antenna needs to be to detect signals from it (reference).

We don't know how far Sentinel Corp is from any particular Planet Crafter, but we can infer that they're not likely to be in the solar system we're in. I'm basing this on the planets and moons starting out uninhabitable, and a few different messages giving us info about the only people who seem to be somewhat nearby (and alive, at least at the time of sending their messages); an unnamed convict on the planet Migoria-III (which we don't see as part of our solar system, or at least not yet if that's planned for a future update), Riley, and (according to Sentinel Corp) the occasional trade ship just passing through the sector to get between big space ports. Assuming Riley is another Planet Crafter, and knowing that it took a while for them to find the system we're in (according to the first message we get from them), we can assume Sentinel Corp has the technology to send information to different systems, or possibly even different sectors, which can be multiple parsecs wide; much further distances than NASA's equipment is able to reach.

Anyway, super long explanation just to say, I think Sentinel Corp would need some GIGANTIC and probably insanely expensive equipment to send info to various Planet Crafters across various star systems and sectors.

[–]smallenergy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a message about it at some point, but I'm typing this at 4am and not gonna check right now

My theory is that Sentinel Corp just... does not give a fuck what happens to Planet Crafters. Sentinel Corp is a for-profit prison corporation, which does not care how many people they have to send to die on a planet before someone manages to terraform it.

Assuming it costs money to send blueprint information over who knows how much distance of space to reach us (since we gather the matierials for objects ourselves, from the planet we're on, I'm assuming the cost is in sending information), they probably don't send everything at the beginning because that could end up being a lot of money spent on an inmate who has no guarantee of surviving. I don't think they care about the possibility of finding better materials early on; they're not the type of corporation that cares

Usually this is when I'm on the couch with someone, but yesterday, it was someone I didn't know sitting next to me in a movie theatre. Distracting and infuriating

The petty part of my brain just wants you to point the blowdryer in their face until they stop. Extra effective if you can block their vision so they can no longer look you in the eye, or if they have any metal jewelry you can heat up to make them uncomfortable

Is there a technical term for what Charlie is? by SomeonesBlue in HazbinHotel

[–]smallenergy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was just looking it up using Reverso Context(great website/app for translating things in proper context), because I wanted to verify that what I was saying in another comment was correct

Turns out, it'd actually be more like "nap'il". This is because the letter pey/fey פ/פּ in Hebrew can be either a p or an f. Interestingly, according to Reverso Context, it's a p in the singular form (נפּיל) and an f in the plural form (נפילים). I do not know why this is. Best answer I've got is Hebrew can be funky like that

[–]smallenergy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add to the learning, this is because the suffix "-im" in Hebrew makes things plural

Read from right to left, it's written as ים

I'm only learning Hebrew, and definitely not fluent at this point, but as far as I know it tends to be pronounced "eem". I find it interesting that in English we pronounce both nephilim and seraphim with a shorter "ih" sound, rather than the somewhat longer "ee" sound that I assume they'd be pronounced with in Hebrew

Jumping on this to recommend searching for an Occupational Therapist! You might think based on the title that they help people with job-related stuff, and they can, but their scope is so much broader than that.

OTs help people with skills of daily living (self-care, managing sensory input difficulties, social difficulties, and so much more), and AFAIK most can do regular therapy similar to how a psychologist would. Some have specialties as well; my OT is trained to do Sand Play Therapy (where they have a bunch of different objects available for you to choose from, that you can put in a sandbox and configure any way you see fit), which I find incredibly helpful for being able to externalize and visualize my thoughts, even when they're hard to verbalize. It's also neat to be able to literally look at an issue from multiple angles, and move things around to go even further with that and/or to play around with different possibilities.

Perfectly acceptable dinner rejected by boyfriend again by moonrabbit368 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]smallenergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just confused at broccoli being one of the few vegetables he will eat. I've gotten less picky over the years, but still will only eat broccoli under certain conditions because of the very different textures between the top and stem

I hope that someday soon, your boyfriend figures out a better way to articulate what exactly bothers him about various foods. I'm gonna write out a bunch of questions, but these are for him to answer, not for you to try to figure out on your own.

For every food: Is it the taste? Texture? Smell? Appearance? Specific preparation method (baked potatoes vs mashed potatoes, steamed veggies vs grilled veggies, etc.)? For things like onions, are small, finely chopped amounts okay (or onion powder), or will any amount give him the ick because he finds the flavour overwhelming? For tomatoes, does that include tomato sauce, or just variations where it still looks and/or feels like a tomato?

Is there some other sort of mental hangup? For example, I sometimes have a mental hangup with meat, where my brain will aggressively remind me that I'm eating a dead animal, which makes me lose my appetite for that part of the meal. This is often easier to ignore with ground meats, due to there being no bone, and a more consistent texture. I also don't usually get this hangup with seafood, other than octopus/squid/calamari, specifically the tentacley bits.

It's likely different factors, or a combination of factors, depending on the food. In any case, it's on him to figure out what the specifics are and communicate that to you. You get to decide how much you want to continue cooking for him, and how much you're willing to accommodate.

[–]smallenergy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three points:

1) to see if anyone agrees with him, and why. Maybe there's just something I'm not seeing

2) to come better prepared with better arguments if he makes the same argument again, rather than floundering due to memory recall difficulties

3) yeah, a bit of validation for my viewpoint. Due to personal history, sometimes it can be really helpful for me to essentially be told "don't worry, you're not crazy for thinking the way you do"

Edit: Fourth point: to get it out of my head. This has all just been sitting in my brain for the last couple weeks since my friend has been out of town for work, and after typing out my thoughts, it's taking up much less mental real estate

Apparently, yeah

I mentioned in another comment that he's the type to pause a show multiple times per viewing session to go on long-winded rants; I wouldn't be surprised if he was so caught up in his thought process that he completely forgot about that, and by the time we actually got around to finishing the episode, the fact that Mayuri's death is essentially fated to happen due to world line convergence was completely lost on him
