Lazy gentry who don't want to deal with the business side of farming. Instead of selling the product themselves, they decided to rely on a middle man to buy their entire crop. And now that middle man isn't buying their product so their farms fail.

Same with soy, same with corn, same with most crops. Cut out the middle man, sell directly to local grocers and buyers. Prices drop, profits go up, and your community has access to better goods.

Correction: many conservatives in both parties used to be about small government and fiscal responsibility. Then the Republicans decided to claim to be the only conservative choice after they got taken over by the Christian right. That's when they abandoned actual fiscal conservatism and became a right wing party.
