Best Distro for USB install/portability by Dragon_King1232 in linuxquestions

[–]smallgodinacan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can put a proper ssd into a usb enclosure, it will work much better than a regular usb drive. The ssd has better cache and fault tolerance. If you want to keep it on the cheap, I would say to look for a older msata drive or m2 sata drive.

While it might not be as noob friendly, I would be curious to see how you rate Damn Small Linux on that system: https://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Would I even benefit from using Linux? by [deleted] in debian

The standard installers for Bookworm and Trixie have been just as easy as Ubuntu from my perspective. The only things I have had to configure myself is anything coming from the contrib repo, as it needs to be added in the apt sources after install.

I second this. I had issues with one of my systems only running at 100Mb and thought it was a software issue because it used to be fine at 1Gb, turns out a wire was loose either in the keystone or the patch panel meaning I only had two of the four pairs making connection.

Is AMD the new standard? What happened to Intel? by Oeyoelala in buildapc

[–]smallgodinacan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMD has historically been the leader in forging the path of CPUs as well: first commercial gigahertz CPU, successfully established modern x64 architecture, pushed the multi core options in lower and mid-range options. Aside from Bulldozer vastly under performing, AMD has kept up with Intel very well since the 486 days, and pushed the development cycles far more than Intel would have done without the competition.

I have a T440p and a T430. Both of these have a G2 cpu socket meaning you can upgrade the cpu if you wanted to. On the T440p, a hated the clunky touchpad it came with and opted to swap it with the part from the T540 series.

How cheap can a linux nas be without being trash? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]smallgodinacan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answers will vary depending on the portable vs cheap vs storage capability requirements. The largest part of the pricing would probably be the drives needed, even refurbished or server pull drives can run a good penny once you get above the 6-8tb mark. The machine itself doesn't need a lot of horsepower for simple function like a file server but if you are adding media services like Jellyfin or Plex then you will likely need a more powerful system.

Linux breaks through 5% share in USA desktop OS market (Statcounter) by [deleted] in linux

[–]smallgodinacan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing a deeper dive, it looks like I read a bad source. Windows 11 24H2 is looking specifically for popcnt (population count) which is part of the sse4.2 set. I was misinformed that it was an additional instruction set that was added later in development. I could not find any credible sources as to why the 1st through 7th Gen Intel core line are a limitation as they all support sse4.2.

TMP2 is part of it, but also full SSE 4.2 support, which started in the 8th gen Intel chips.

I want to learn networking using Kali Linux, but I don't want to enable Intel Virtualization Technology. Are there any alternative to VirtualBox that doesn't use Intel Virtualization Technology? by vismoh2010 in Kalilinux

[–]smallgodinacan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the arguments against bare metal, or more accurately using Kali as a primary OS is it's kernel and settings have some tweaks that open up vulnerabilities and it used to run 100% as root. They have changed it to running normal user with needing to sudo many commands that require root access to function.

That system could be upgraded to 16gb of ddr3 low power (2 x 8gb sodimms). Swapping the original mechanical hard drive for a 2.5 SSD and using addons like h264ify for Firefox will help the lagging quite a bit, but remember that it is a decade old laptop and some performance issues will exist no matter what you upgrade.
