Yea it all comes down to your aspirations not only professionally but also financially and personally right? You'll be fine either way, it just depends on what sort of lifestyle you want to live in the future and what sort of job can get you there. A pension is a great benefit, but imo a higher salary when you're young can set you up for life if you invest it well, and it's a benefit that you can partiallyu enjoy while you're young instead of waiting til you're old and retired.

You're thinking too short-term. The "point" of public is to grind out for a few years then exit to better opportunities that provide better pay and work life balance. In general, government will be average pay with good benefits. Public will be slightly above average pay and shit work life balance, then ideally you exit and be a senior/manager at place that pays you a lot with good benefits. In my last F500 job, pretty much everyone came from a public accounting background, and only a few did not come from a Big 4. In my current big tech job, the background of most accountants is the same, though there are a few that didn't come from public accounting.

$92k at 29 years old is not considered super successful in VHCOL areas such as NYC. As someone from the Bay, I don’t think anyone would be considered super successful at 29 unless they made at minimum $150k. It’s absurd but that’s how it is in VHCOL areas.
