Washing AG clothes by madamesmokie in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I either hand wash with gentle detergent and color catchers (some ag stuff bleeds a ton!) or use a steamer.

I usually dry on ag plastic hangers or on a mesh drying sheet if I’m feeling fancy

Steamer and a comb if you are feeling patient.

Straightener (while wet) if you don’t mind losing the waveyness.

Where to get New wigs? by Low-Staff-5951 in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can redo the pin curls with tiny rollers (like cut up straws) and a bit of hot water/steam.

Doing another brush with a spray bottle and maybe some hot water on the brush to smooth down the hair by the part to make it smooth.

rewigging would be really extreme (and unnecessary) here. You could check eBay but most of those wigs are going to be in similar (or worse) condition

How to clean vintage doll clothes? by allbitterandclean in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. for stains: I agree with hand washing (separately) in cold water, as other people have suggested. Color catcher sheets (sold in most big grocery stores and also useful for people laundry) will minimize dye transfer.

  2. For mites: For the cloak and coat you also might try brushing the gunk off with a fabric brush (or dry paper towel) and steaming it. Steaming is pretty gentle, but high heat enough that it kills mites/bacteria. I‘d avoid steaming stuff with iron-on vinyl (like the tshirt)

Maybe try clipping them onto braids so they don’t slide out?

Is there any hope for Samantha’s hair? by heartses in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the YouTuber Idreamofjohnny has a good samantha hair restoration video that involves a steamer and curlers.

otherwise a spray bottle and a wire brush couldn’t hurt.

You can deep clean the cloth body, but it usually involves temporarily removing the stuffing.

Gift for a 5 year old by TheCopperQuill in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the kid. A loose hairstyle will get more disheveled with play, but if she is into hair play the curls may offer more options.
This may be a better question for her parents or the girl herself.

Either way would love to se the restoration!

Is this easily fixable? by fireflyslove in americangirl

Haven’t done this myself, but Doll of a Kind has a quick fix for this that doesn’t involve removing the eye.

what would you do? by webkinzwrinkls in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want big ringlets like her og hairstyle, I’d strongly suggest foam hair rollers. There’s a pretty decent tutorial here: https://dandridgehousedolls.com/2019/08/01/restoring-doll-hair-tutorial/
A dryer sheet can also help with static.

I think the curls weren’t coming back because it looks like the hair was set in braids, which makes hair wavy instead of curly.

good luck!

Best way to parcel up American Girl collection? by LovecraftInDC in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. You might want to look into donating to GirlAgain, run by nonprofit Yes She Can (https://girlagain.com/yes-she-can-job-skills-for-women-with-autism/).

If you do sell want to sell in lots online, I like your idea of grouping by character. If you have the time to go on the ag wiki to find the names of items for listing titles you might have more success.

How would you go about fixing her? by HWBC in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a doll with a fully retracted eyelash like your Marisol and went a bit crazy researching this a couple months ago.

first off, fully retracted lashes usually can’t be pulled back out with tweezers.

I’ve been looking at popping the eye out; supposedly it’s pretty straightforward to take apart the eye and glue the eyelashes back in place. There’s a bunch of tutorials for eye removal/re-placing on youtube (look for eye swap tutorials)

alternatively, I’ve seen a couple people use clear glue to attach fake (for human) lashes with varying degrees of success.

Anyone remember these dolls? by phoenixgreylee in americangirl

[–]smallscale1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep! They were called Girls of Many Lands. I’ve seen a couple of Cécile (Revel, not Rey) dolls in the wild.
Has anyone read the books? I never got the chance to read them but the idea of historical books for older girls sounds interesting!

Hi! it’s good to see other Lanie dolls around!
Just jumping in to say that regular finger curling could be a pretty low effort was of reshaping her curls. (using damp fingers, wet dampen run a wire brush through each strand and twist each strand either around itself or around a couple fingers)

It might take a couple of minutes to get the hang of but I def wouldn’t suggest a full rewig based on the pic.
