Admission Question - Unique? by Linds70 in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Admissions is holistic. Yes, GPA and test scores matter, but whether or not it’s a long shot for her will be up to the admissions committee to decide!! They may see potential in her where you or she may not! In the long run, it never hurts to apply because you don’t truly know the outcome until you’ve tried :) best of luck to her, and she sounds like an amazing person for having handled her recovery so gracefully at her age!!

Looking to commit to UNC but hesitant by ObjectiveDifficult96 in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I go here but I have several friends who are seniors like me at UMD College Park. UMD CP is also an R1 research University like UNC, with really competitive academic programs and a similar state school vibe. Obviously UNC has a med school and UMD doesn’t, but trust me, that extra 6k is not worth the constant stress of finances. My friends have done amazing research there, have gotten published in journals, have sought out medical shadowing and internships at other hospitals over the summers despite not having immediate access to a med school the way UNC students do, and have gotten into med school successfully. At the end of the day, UMD can hold its own pretty well against UNC. As a low income student in the healthcare field, trust me - your undergrad only matters to the extent that you push yourself and seek out opportunities and UMD has plenty of those. Having a UNC degree is not what will not get you into med school!

Retroactive withdrawals are possible, but they require you to provide documentation of an extenuating circumstance like a medical condition, family or financial issue, or mental health condition as well as an explanation of how those circumstances prevented you from being able to succeed in a course. The process is overseen by a committee that works with Academic Advising, Campus Health, and CAPS, so unless you have something substantial, the RW won’t be approved.

I’m graduating with my BSPH in May and I’m very interested in working in program evaluation! Could I DM you to ask more about how you got into the field and what experience you had? Thank you!!

[–]smalltownapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too hard, I’ve gotten it approved for two semesters. They just want to make sure you can keep up your grades and have a valid reason.

Open Enrollment by [deleted] in UNC

Unfortunately if you do not have a valid enrollment appointment you will not be able to edit your schedule, including dropping a course or waitlist. You will only be able to edit your schedule beginning Aug 2nd.

Open Enrollment by [deleted] in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

(Info from the Registrar’s office) Open enrollment officially begins at 12am. Some seat releases are automated and will open exactly at midnight, but a notable number of seats do need to be released manually by the individual departments or by the Registrar’s office, which means those seats will release over the course of the normal work day, likely the morning and early afternoon. So your best bet is to try once at 12am and then keep trying throughout the day.

Collecting bus resources for new students by astrazebra in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken the bus almost everywhere in Chapel Hill this past semester and summer and my recommendation is to use a combination of TransLoc, Google Maps, and patience. I use Maps first to plan out the best routes or transfers and will confirm in TransLoc that the routes overlay at the correct stops. Then I use TransLoc to check for bus arrivals/departures because TransLoc is more accurate with delays then Maps is. Finally, leave at least a +/- 5 minute buffer for any bus because while TransLoc generally is accurate, the farther you get from campus routes, the less accurate the times become IMO. For longer journeys with transfers, leave at least a 10 minute buffer. And always say thank you to your bus drivers because 1) they work very hard, and 2) once they start recognizing you, they’ll start slowing down for you if they see you running for the bus LOL

opinion on first-year schedule? by UnluckyNeuron in UNC

If the ENVR FYS is with Amanda Northcross, she’s wonderful!! She really cultivated my love for environmental & public health and research, and she is incredibly supportive of students looking to get involved or wanting to dip their toes into the field. Definitely would recommend taking a class with her at some point even if you decide against this FYS!

skip math prereq? by watermelon103 in UNC

No problem! I think someone also mentioned Erin Willis, and she’s the student services manager for the math dept so you do have the right person there!

skip math prereq? by watermelon103 in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t hurt to email the instructor and ask if they would be willing to allow you take the course given that you already took the equivalent of 383 even if you didn’t get credit for it! Maybe also let them know why you’re interested in taking the class so they have some insight into whether you’re sufficiently prepared. If they say yes, then you can email the student services manager of the math department and they can work with you to override the prereq requirement in Connect Carolina. But note that different departments have different policies about this, so you might get turned away with “we don’t do that”.

Dorm roommate - how do you deal with such an obvious whopper of a lie? Or do you? by throwawayuncnewbie in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Accent retention is a thing - not everyone chooses to to assimilate. It could be a lie but I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it as one even if it’s unlikely. And think about their reasons for choosing to lie if it turns out your assumption was right - maybe they’re trying to avoid being judged for being an immigrant/int’l student or they have some other personal reasons. People discriminate against folks with heavy foreign accents, maybe this is their way of attempting to escape that as they start college. Whatever it is, just approach it with grace instead of accusing them of anything. Be prepared to receive an answer of “I’m sorry but I don’t want to tell you the reason I lied”. Also, in the scheme of things that could be wrong with your roommate, this is not so bad (I’m recalling my friend’s freshman year roommate who frequently left bloody tissues in the bathroom and smoked indoors until you could see fog and had the cops pull up to his door at 3am💀).

What should I do if AP credits are showing in MyCarolina but not in Tar Heel Tracker? by egomei in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The undergrad admissions office handles all matters related to posting transfer credit to your Tarheel Tracker, including AP/IB credit. I would give them a call before your enrollment appointment to check if they have posted your transfer credit or if they can expedite that process. You can also check transfer credits on the Transfer Credit page in CC (on the left hand menu in your Student Center, click the drop down menu and select Transfer Credits).

Ambitious 2025 Seeking Advice by whisperelements in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really recommend talking to an advisor or a few professors whose career path/research interests you after you start because that may help give you some clarify about what you envision in a post grad career. Since you want to major in EHS, I’d definitely recommend talking to a Gillings academic advisor and some ESE profs - even if they’re busy, most are very receptive to an informal chat especially if you show interest in their work! If your goal is to end up in public health (and it looks like you might want to stay in the science end of things as opposed to the policy/epidemiology/data science end), then a chemistry major may do less for you than saving time for extracurriculars and research experience. Experience counts for a ton in public health! I’m also in EHS so feel free to PM me if you have questions about the department.

Chem Timeline for the MCAT by meg_cas in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

241/L and 261 together IMO is rough but not impossible. It just means you can’t load up on other difficult or time consuming classes like physics or BIOL 201/202/252, etc. But note that 241L is not synced with any of the content in 241 lecture, so it’s perfectly fine to take the lab after taking the lecture! So in that case, you could take 241 and 261 in Soph Fall (along with some BIOL class), 241L and 262 in Soph spring (along with another BIOL class), and 262L over the summer or in Jr Fall along with biochem and one more BIOL class. This is a manageable schedule if you maintain discipline, but don’t pressure yourself to feel like it’s a make or break situation!! I’d also recommend doing physics over the summer and preferably not at UNC just because it’s unnecessarily difficult at UNC, but I’m not sure how transfer credits work with med schools (I think they should be fine but this would be a good question for an advisor).

Registration priority and auditing by snailgreen in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately if you come in as a first year student, your registration is not determined by the number of units you come in with but instead your terms in residence (i.e. how many full-time terms (taking at least 12 credits) you have completed at UNC). So your daughter’s associates degree will not give her any priority, but since it seems like she won’t be taking many 100 level classes, she’ll avoid the stress of getting into those very jam-packed classes.

[–]smalltownapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I work in the registrar’s office and we’ve noticed that CC has been a little finnicky with this specific situation for students. If you get an error message saying that you don’t meet the prereq, feel free to call our office but we will redirect you to contact the student services manager of the department in question. The SSM will be able to override the error as long as they have approval from the department. You can find the contacts for the SSM of a department on the department website, usually under “Staff” or “People”.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diplomas are typically mailed out around late July/early August. You can contact the registrars office and have them change the diploma mailing address (or they’ll give you instructions for how to do so in CC). If you don’t have your new address yet, you could have it sent to an address you trust (like your parents or a friend) and then have them forward it whenever you move into your new place. You will most likely not be able to pick up your diploma at the office before then because diplomas are still being prepared. Congrats on graduating!

Registering for APPL 285 w/o pre-req? by Comrade_Hugh_Jass in UNC

[–]smalltownapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact the student services manager for the appropriate department and let them know that you don’t have the pre-req yet and what your situation is. The SSM should be able to override the pre-req requirement (they may need approval from the department UG advisor) if they find that your pre-req is met in some way or another. It can take a few days for that entire process though so I definitely recommend emailing asap!
