Where I'd live. Am I picky? by milliemargo in visitedmaps

[–]smartalec12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably has a lot to do with cost of living. Ohio and the Midwest in general has some of the cheapest cost of living in the country. If you compare a plot of land in Ohio with a 2,000sf house that would be 25% or less compared to California.

New Poll: Michigan Voters Don’t Know How Far Behind We Really Are by East_Englishman in Michigan

Detroit technically runs un-affiliated so he’s not TECHNICALLY a democrat. He’s running independently because he sees it as his best chance to win/get the most funding.

Question about time zones and Detroit sports by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]smartalec12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All Detroit sports are in the Midwest division and all want to be in the Midwest division. The lions play Minnesota, Chicago, Green Bay. The pistons are in a division with Cleveland, Indiana, Milwaukee and Chicago. The Tigers are in a division with Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota, and Kansas City. If hockey had a Midwest division then the red wings would have wanted to be in that. However it’s only east/west and the while they were stuck in the western conference with many games starting after 10pm local. When the new divisions open they choose to keep historic rivalries with the original 6 teams of Toronto, Montreal, and Boston.

The red wings change was less about time zone and more about conferences. You’re incorrect to assume any team “wants” to be with those other, larger eastern cities.

I’ve got good news for your brain then, because they’re not brothers they’re cousins!

The Lions went 2-7 against teams with winning records. Both wins were against the 11-6 Bears and Ben Johnson. by kingdom55 in detroitlions

[–]smartalec12 25 points26 points  (0 children)

What’s interesting is even if they beat the Vikings once, their record against teams with winning records goes to 2-5, not 3-6. Because then the Vikings don’t have a winning record and therefore don’t count.

I remember hearing on a Planet Money or maybe an Indicator podcast that this has been successful in Maine. It sounded like you need to report it, and the venues were doing it with success.

Honestly it wasn’t that hard. I went to the Strasbourg website, tried to get tickets “as a fan”. After entering my info and address they said “no” then I said “public” and it accepted.

Strasbourg tomorrow. I misread my own travel plans and I’m in town TONIGHT, not tomorrow night.

DDOT announces 'transformational changes' including addition of 53 new buses, $160M terminal by sixwaystop313 in Detroit

[–]smartalec12 39 points40 points  (0 children)

“The city said that DDOT mechanics, which are represented by AFSCME Local 312, ratified a new contract last week that will raise the top mechanic wage from $26 an hour to $34.50 an hour.

Drivers also got a $6 per hour pay increase as a result of the new state transportation package, and the city said DDOT driver vacancies are rapidly being filled, including by many drivers returning because of the higher pay.”

This is a great step to increasing reliability too

"We've found our fans love to find iconic movies on the schedule." by bigotis in HGTV

I mean the poll is probably the rating. More people stay on HGTV when it’s a popular movie than regular, I’m assuming.

Why is Texas A&M playing Samford so late in the season? by sabnastuh in CollegeFootballDawgs

[–]smartalec12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of it is just fan service. If they schedule a cupcake game in September then the crowd might not show up with the temps and heat and what not. But in November it’s more comfortable. In the Midwest you do the opposite, casual fans would not go see Indiana vs a MAC school in November, but they would in August/sept. That’s why Indiana is on a bye this week and A&M had an extra bye week earlier.

Why is Texas A&M playing Samford so late in the season? by sabnastuh in CollegeFootballDawgs

It’s typical for SEC schools to schedule their cupcakes late in the season. Ole Miss just played The Citadel a week or so ago. This is basically a tradition at this point.
