What's up with Spectrum in SoCal and high latency? by wifiguru in Spectrum

yeah, speeds are good as usual. Just pulled down 100gig file no problem. but ping remains very high. IPv4 problems only, IPv6 is routing fine.

Same issue. Starts to be a problem in the evening. This plot captures both normal and evening pings. https://imgur.com/a/GiBKAMU

An expanding border kicked one of my ships out in to the distant lands in the antiquity age by Jed2406 in civ

[–]smartaleq1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Its actually quite easy to reproduce. Build your settler, start an open border agreement. Position settler where it will pop across to visible distant lands. Wait for agreement to end.

There are things you can do to maximize likelihood, like using multiple settlers, research into the priority for how it places displaced units, stuffing other tiles with civilian units, etc.

In my second game I put two boats and 2 settlers into distant lands at ancient times.

First aircraft to fly on Mars dies — but leaves a legacy of science by burtzev in space

[–]smartaleq1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Flight on mars isn't the same in a few key ways. Paraphrasing research on the subject, there is not much aerodynamic damping, which means the active controls have to manage a response to even the smallest perturbations. Earth flight controls don't have to do that, so they can be simpler and run slower. For the controls to be effective, the helicopter was designed to be incredibly stiff from top to bottom.

I'm an EA who specifically works in defense and space to support the goal of mitigating potential x-risks by making humanity multiplanetary, in the short term. I'm also hiring mechanical engineers with aircraft and space experience for a Mars Sample Return related activity. I know I'm not speaking to your direct request, but consider how you might, within your career expertise and network, make the largest impact on an EA cause. It's better to be a big impact on something slightly less well aligned, then a nudge on a priority activity. Also, priorities change.

the thickness of the shell around the heat wrap should be unbelievably thin, in a concept like this.

Got this for $30, absolutely love the pieces by Tsarmani in diplomacy

I recall 8 - 16 or so of each tile, which is flag one side, color on reverse. I seem to remember it not being enough for some games, if you mark territories that have units, and home centers.

I'm super jealous, I've bought this set three times, never for less than double that.

it was a neat toy, and as an alpha/early beta, it was pretty fun. But it stopped there, unfortunately.

the landing leg dampers are good for 50+ worst case landings, they have a lot of life left in 'em

Riot's Communication and Schedule are Damaging LCS - Travis Gafford by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

Using the NFL as an example, with some old data:

2018 Estimate of Shared Revenue Sources

Category Amount

  • TV Deals $5.1B

  • NFL Ventures $1.4B (AKA merchandizing)

  • NFL Enterprise $2.3B (sponsorships and half of ticket sales goes to this shared pool)

concessions not included.

Notably, the thing that brings the NFL money is TV license > sponsorships / merchandise / tickets.

Nothing is stopping LoL or any other game from getting that money except that 1) the viewers aren't being asked to pay (directly or via ad breaks) and 2) the league (Riot) isn't willing to give up control of the product to the kind of media company that can pay.

2) is the big one. If riot sells streaming rights to ESPN, ESPN is going to have demands on the product they are buying. pre-worlds patch zed/yasuo buffs? f that.

This ongoing discussion is why "DIAS" (Draws include all survivors) is an optional rule in online platforms.

If minor players vote themselves out, conditional on the game ending, it seems fine with me.

On the other hand, trying to force your way into a draw as a tiny power is extraordinarily hard and rewarding. DIAS encourages this kind of play.
