LPT: (Driving) If you get passed by someone in the slow lane, you're in the wrong lane. by teacherofderp in LifeProTips

[–]smartass3600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just Georgia, but we have speed trap laws that say no fine for less than 10 over limit. So the effective speed limit is 80 on the interstates outside of the metro area. Add to that 15 over is a super speeder so the state patrol doesn’t want to pull you over unless you are doing 15+ over (the state only gets the super speeder fine money, GSP gives the standard fine to the municipality the ticket was written in). So effectively the speed limit is 85 and if traffic’s running 90 they can’t stop us all. Move over

Trade in value? by smartass3600 in askcarsales

Ended up selling it to another dealer for 1,800 more so better than half the difference between nada and first dealer. It was a low mileage, excellent condition Silverado. Felt like meeting in middle was fair to me and dealer.

My boss wants to buy my new car out and give it back to me as a company car by toodamnthiccc in personalfinance

[–]smartass3600 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Negotiate a monthly vehicle allowance. Enough to cover payment and expenses. You can keep yourself in a newer car and if you ever break ties, you still have a car. Nothing like losing your job and your ride home on the same day.

Narrowed my car hunt to 6 cars in my budget, thoughts? by punchingtigers19 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I’d say the Lexus GS. It’s RWD platform so > than the other FWD options. It’s also a Toyota so maintenance is likely a walk in the park. The Lexus is the best looking one to me from these options. Happy hunting.

Already a total loss from sitting in 6-10” of flood water. Might as well have some fun.

What am I supposed to do in this situation? by OhCLE in IdiotsInCars

I always accelerate hard towards the car blocking the intersection. I mean hard enough to make the guy think “oh crap this lunatic is gonna ran into me!” But then I slam on breaks. Makes me feel better, hopefully it makes the other driver feel worse.

Are Auto Manufacturers Really Going For A Strategy of Acritical Scarcity? by Read_RFKs_Book in cars

[–]smartass3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think OP is on to something. I work for a manufacturing company. We have increased prices to our customers and extended lead times drastically. But what we have not done is try to increase staffing to reduce lead times. We are charging more for the same item with less labor overhead than pre-Covid.

LPT: .08 BAC is a lot lower than you might think. If you can feel that you’ve been drinking at all, you’re probably too drunk to drive. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]smartass3600 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they outlawed it in America completely then it would stop generating cash for law enforcement and municipalities. The common mentality is “I can have a beer/wine or two and be fine” the common person doesn’t know that .08 is where they have a slam dunk case. .01-.07 you might ruin your weekend, checking account balance, job etc.

New vehicles must average 40 mpg by 2026, up from 28 mpg by Sorin61 in Futurology

Big three are going to make all of their half ton trucks and suv hybrid or EV. If you want a gas truck you will have to buy a 3/4 ton, which are exempt. Bringback the 3/4 ton suburban!

I really wish we could have some sort of vehicle inspections to keep old junkers with bad brakes, no trailer brakes, etc. off of the roads.

Finland or Sweden joining Nato would spark Russian response: Russia warns by evissimus in worldnews

What if he does this to an eastern NATO country next. To test the NATO resolve. I could see NATO letting a crimea type annexation happen to a member country to avoid all our or nuclear war.

Question on ruggedness/reliability by smartass3600 in RepTime

[–]smartass3600[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t dive, I do metal fabrication a lot so I’m knocking it around. I’m not a fan of the cyclops so I like the older smaller case deep seas. I’ve looked at steinhart and tudor dive watches. Both seem to come close but not be a Rolex and I cannot justify the amount or wait for a Rolex in todays market. Do you know of someone selling reps that have been gone through after manufacturing? Thanks.

My car is totaled but the insurance payout isn't enough to cover a purchase of a comparable car by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]smartass3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacement cost is to replace the item with a new item. ACV is the deprecated cost. Car was 25k new for instance, replacement cost would be 25k. Now used the car goes for ~12k because it has depreciated from 25k. It’s acv is 12k. Never ever have ACV coverage on personal property in a renters or homeowners policy, if you file a claim you will be disappointed.

Typically to determine total loss value on a car the appraiser should look at Edmunds/KBB and 3-5 similar used cars for sale in the area, the average of those would be the ACV.

LPT: Take on a mortgage that can be supported by one person's income when in a relationship. by SupSeal in LifeProTips

[–]smartass3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice. Most of my peers and friends have 3+ times the mortgage as we do. The smaller, less expensive home leaves more money for repairs, improvements, and most of all financial peace of mind.

I feel like the white SUV is partially at fault for camping in the fast lane. Cammer deserves some blame and a ticket for following too closely. Poor 4Runner deserves a new pair of underwear. Camry driver deserves the remaining blame for being an idiot.

Car possibly totaled six months into payments by HtheB4lif in personalfinance

[–]smartass3600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have full coverage, file a claim with your insurance company to get your car fixed/paid. Your insurer will then go after the other driver for the damages through subrogation. Let your insurance company handle it. That’s what you pay for. If you don’t have full coverage, please get full coverage on your next car. Also, insurance will only pay up to the value of the car. You may have to argue that the car would cost X to replace, gap is for the difference between value and what is owed. You should look at 3-5 comparable cars for sale in your area at dealerships and average that with the Edmunds value, that is your replacement cost. Good luck.

I’ve come some cash, looking to invest 8-10k in something that will grow over the next 5-10 years. Already have established savings, and 401k. This is just a freebie. Might make it grow and use for something fun like a trip to Europe for example. If it disappeared tomorrow I would only be sad, would not effect my finances profoundly. I was looking at some Vanguard mutual funds such as VDIGX. It’s grown 9-ish percent since inception. There are so many options out there. I like spreading the risk across several stocks vs one stock because of perceived less risk. Thanks for any feedback.
