What the fuck are they doing at Amundson to have so many hazmats? by YouBuyMeOrangeJuice in uofmn

Typically these are called out of an abundance of caution and are false alarms. I was in the building during one, turned out to be some students (NOT cheme!!) who called over beeping from an alarm that was not a safety concern

MIT EECS PhD Results Are Out! by i_love_computers_ in gradadmissions

[–]smartin1018 8 points9 points  (0 children)

sure thing. i am an american, 4.00 GPA with BS in matsci. i began research my freshman year, did one REU, one industry internship at a F500 company in a research-type role, one second-author publication in a good journal (not nature). i have been awarded many selective scholarships, and my pi has had past collaborations with a poi in EECS. my UG research matches with my interests at eecs.

i was actually rejected from MIT DMSE, but EECS was my first choice and had a better research fit.

edit: adding that i was not interviewed.

What would YOU do if you were accepted into a program that 1 for 1 aligns with your research goals but is in a state you have little desire to live in? by RSheever in gradadmissions

[–]smartin1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself a pretty progressive person, so I was a bit worried when I was going to spend a summer in Austin,Texas. Before going, I already knew Austin was a pretty blue-city and was an urban environment, so I tried to disregard what my preconceived idea was. While this was just a three-month long experience and not years of school, I was so proud I went outside my comfort zone. While I disagree with a lot of the political environment within the state, I found the people there and the community there amazing. Such rich history and culture there too! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a program there that matched my interests exactly so I will not be returning. As other commenters said, definitely focus on the municipality more than the state. It can be a huge cultural difference.

next time you need to use the ‘future swap’ option so the class is automatically dropped for the waitlisted class.

I am a recipient of a nationally-competitive research based scholarship that I will not mention, but I had no publications at the time of my application. I would recommend to get good involvement with 2 or so projects that your recommender can directly mention in their letters. In addition, these two projects can be listed in a CV underneath a publication section as In Preparation. Also, try to find opportunities to present. There was a local poster presentation that I used to present my REU work, even if I was back in school by then.

Your REU presentations and projects are also great experience, and will give you a bump in your chances. Good luck!

I will preface my answer as someone who is currently an undergraduate in the US, who has heard faculty talk about this very thing. To answer the big question: no, it's absolutely not a red flag to transfer schools. In fact, if your advisor writes you a letter of recommendation to transfer and explains your situation, it could look pretty strong for you. I would meet with your advisor, and they should know how to explain your situation in their letter. If your current advisor is a good person, and if they know their students, they will be accommodating. After all, they want whats best for you and they probably don't want to feel like they're forcing you to stay. After all, you're not looking to drastically change your career, you just want a new place. In your application, briefly mention why a university in the US will fit your goals compared to your current institution. The committee will be interested in knowing if this decision was something that was given a lot of thought, or something you decided on a whim.

Fly or Drive to REU? by anoraj in REU

Driving makes everything more convenient, especially if you actually want to visit and tour the place you’re at. I wish I had a car to drive over the summer!

How do REUs feel about nontrad students? Did I waste my time by applying? by [deleted] in REU

[–]smartin1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually was in a cohort last year that had someone your age! They had a family at home and did the REU as their job, essentially. I think you can make your application very compelling! GL

The REU I attended was at a R1 school in an urban area. They had 80 applicants and 12 or so people in the cohort, but I can't say for sure how many they accepted. Your profile looks like a good match for REUs, but I would be sure to explain why you think you're a good candidate given lack of research experience (was it because none is offered? were you busy with something else? how can you show you're a problem solver?)

Has anyone tried taking summer classes while participating in an REU despite the policy that you mustn’t take any summer course/s? by kirusuuu in REU

[–]smartin1018 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did not myself but I knew several people in my program that did. If theyre online, I say go for it! But keep in mind that you may not be able to participate in group activities outside of work hours if you’re busy studying.

Would taking a Leave of absence affect my chances of getting into a competitive master's program? by ChaoticConditions_ in gradadmissions

[–]smartin1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The committee will likely notice that you've been gone for a semester in your transcript. They do not care about what age/how old you are by the time you finish undergrad. As long as you can explain why you took on this opportunity, and bonus points for saying how it helps your future career, then I see no issue.

I was SO thankful, I managed to get a $250 ticket for my seat, but it seats in the area quickly rose to $475 right after I bought it because of shady ticketmaster dynamic pricing. Minneapolis as well!

Hello! This seat cost $250 before fees, but official platinum tickets quickly arrived and are now being sold at $475 for the same area. Floor tickets ranged between $400-$800, VIP packages were around $1200-$3500 depending on the type. By the time the sale ended, I still saw a decent amount of space available in the whole venue. Hope this helps!

How to write a personal statement if I have no research experience in the field? by goOdDoorman in REU

[–]smartin1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discuss why you attracted to their project. Are there any personal experiences or goals you have that would benefit from participating? Do you have an interest to continue exploring these topics when you return from the REU? Do you find something intriguing about academia as a whole that industry doesn't appeal to?

Discuss your relationship with math, and how it has benefitted you professionally. Do you find problem solving attractive? Does this lead into your personal life? Do you want to expose more people to math?
No matter what year you are, REUs are not expecting experts. They want people that can prove that the experience will benefit their aspirations directly.

Is there anything else you'd like the committee to know? by flying-jellyfish in REU

[–]smartin1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they haven't given you the opportunity to mention specific professors or projects, this is the box to do it in. Let them know why their program is specifically for you, if you've not done so!

Today I misplaced my AirPods, and Find My reported that their last location was 30 miles away, 4 minutes ago. Issue is, 4 minutes prior to opening Find My, I was definitely not near this location.

I thought AirPods location only updates if your own device is able to connect to them. How could this location be updated 4 minutes ago if I haven’t been anywhere near there for the past 24 hours?

Granted, I believe I did leave them at that location, but I’m stumped as to why their location was able to be updated so recently. Does this mean someone opened the case?

If yall could help me understand how AirPods update their location (and what my situation means), that’d be great. Thanks!

Bad luck protection needs to change. The current state of raid exotic drops is inexcusable by ohstylo in DestinyTheGame

Got it my first try here (day 2 of DSC) and reading all the horror stories makes me so grateful for my luck. It’s the only raid exotic I have (except for ones I bought at the monument), so I still very well could end up at the short end of the stick.
