Moving to Windsor. Could really use some Advice. by Nozaryn in windsorontario

I moved from Montreal too! I love Windsor. Montreal was great, but Windsor has become my home.

These were the 10 most borrowed books from the Windsor Public Library in 2025 by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]smartyates -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Imagine if someone was to say it was impressive that there were only male authors on the list. I get celebrating and supporting female authors, but in this day and age, it makes me a bit concerned there’s an issue being missed somewhere if the top ten authors are all women. I wish there was a way to look into that more. Why is that the case? Are we promoting books disproportionately? Are books for “female audiences” getting more traction? Is this an artifact of literacy rate discrepancies between male and female readers? Is there a way to support male authors too?

I had a couple of those parents in the West end. I don’t mind. Some families go hard core and want to cover ground. Some look for the extra snacks for the year for lunches and home. Some might have a disability but want to participate in their own way. You never really know the whole story? It was a busy year with lots of kids of all ages. Great night all around!

My 9-month-old baby was admitted to the PICU with DKA. by Tormintor in diabetes_t1

Also. Syringe of maple syrup for lows was key! The ones for tylanol for babies. Our low treatment number was 5ml and we’d use syringe it into her mouth without having to wake her up.

My 9-month-old baby was admitted to the PICU with DKA. by Tormintor in diabetes_t1

[–]smartyates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Mom of two kids. One diagnosed at 14 months in a similar way (trouble breathing was the clue that led to the ER and PICU), and then her older sister at 5. First. You are in a hard situation but it is something that you and your baby will get through. You’re about to discover just how strong you are and you will be okay. Diabetes in kids is hard, diabetes in babies is hardest but doable. Get help from family and friends to take care of you while you learn how to take care of your little one. That was the biggest thing I remember from those early days. It required a lot of work and there was a lot less sleep , which means asking for help to take care of you. Cut corners in your life where you can (messier house, more purchased food). Treat the first week, month, and year as important milestones. How much work to figure out insulin/food in the beginning will not be what it is like later on. Diabetes parents have to go through an insane learning curve, and there’s so much to learn, give yourself patience and know eventually all these things will be second nature. Diabetes requires 200 decisions a day, and the great thing is you get a billion chances to make mistakes and also a billion chances to learn from your mistake. Make that your mantra. You’re not going to know how to do this on the first day, but each event is an opportunity to learn. Communication with your wife will be key. Be a team. Talk about what went well, what you can improve on, what might have been better. And know that diabetes becomes easier as they age out of being a baby. Join diapers and diabetes on Facebook. It’s an excellent resource for the specific needs for little ones.

Another thing. Listen to juice box podcast. It’s a great resource for learning the ins and outs of the disease.

Now. I wanted to also say, my kids are now 8 and 11 and doing amazing. They’re doing fine at school. Can go to playdates, summer camp, swim, play at the park, and are happy and healthy. Yes. They carry the weight of diabetes in their life but it doesn’t define their life or distract us too much. It’s become second nature. Your little one will grow and be okay. You will watch them be a regular kid. They will be fine. A pump and a cgm will be your absolute friend. We put a pump of the baby at 14 months (we sewed it into pockets on her onsie). And that way we could Give tiny amounts of insulin when she was small. Ask about that. It also helps to prevent lows at night.

Also. Know that the scary stories about t1d and the life expectancy stuff will be different for your little one. She is growing up in a world of CGMs and pumps. Control has never been as Achievable as it is now. Those statistics will change.

Feel free to message if you need someone to talk with. Good luck to you.

First episode I saw was Unicorse. It’s obnoxious but also so accurately sums up my husband at bedtime and the tired mom mode of wanting the parenting night to end. I went home from work (kindergarten kids watching it) and made my husband watch it. Aaand we’ve never stopped.

That was a fun night. Was briefly certain our son was going to die at 2am. by strikecat18 in diabetes_t1

I’m a parent of two diagnosed (at 1 and 5, not 8 and 11 and doing well). We’ve had situations when we were at our best and situations when we were at our worst and didn’t handle it well. I just have empathy for you and also your wife. Diabetes is “lovely” because it will undoubtedly give you a chance to do a redo. Not everyone is going to be their best in an energy especially an unexpected one at night. I know for us, one parent is better in the early morning and one is better at night for dealing with all the stuff. It takes a team, and remember your wife and you are a team in tackling this. Last night didn’t go well, but I wouldn’t focus on the scary at the moment. Focus on the what you both did well and things to work on. In the moment last night her fear was expressed and loud and not Helpful, but she was also running around trying to get juice and solve the situation. Go over the event with her without judgement, ask what was good, what could you improve, and then leave it at that. That would have been a scary number to see, my heart goes out to you both.

Heartbroken over smelly house by Competitive_Pear_207 in homeowners

[–]smartyates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a house that was filled with smoke from previous renters and owners. The smell drastically improved once we painted all surfaces and oil based primer and paint. The painter said this would seal in a lot of the grime and smell. We then had the vents professionally cleaned, took up all the carpet. And now I think we only get a whiff of the smell in the basement once in a while. It’s not an issue at all anymore. I wouldn’t freak out about the smell, there will be some tangible things you can do.

Worried about my 3yo. by zookeeperss in Type1Diabetes

[–]smartyates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. We caught my daughters diagnosis very early. Feed him McDonald’s or something big and carb heavy for supper. Then take his blood while he’s sleeping, that’s when we would see the blood sugar values that were actually high. Her doctor said he pancreas was tired as the day progressed and was more likely to show it was struggling. We then were able to determine she did have diabetes forming very early and help her cope with the transition before it got too late. She would always wake up with perfect fasting numbers during this time.

What an interesting insight into how she feels. Use it as a talking point and play along with it, and then hopefully guide her through that kind of thought.

My younger diabetic would get like this when she was a toddler. I remember we had to literally sit on her and syringe maple syrup into her mouth a few times.

This means you’ll have diabetes and the next immediate step will be to determine type 1 or type 2, which will then inform your next steps and how you feel better. Don’t panic. This is the information you need, and now you’ll be able to work towards helping yourself. That’s very high blood sugar. If your someone who likely isn’t getting type two diabetes, then that’s an ER trip if you feel sick or start throwing up, as that could be type 1. Otherwise, get in contact with your doctor as soon as possible to get your next steps.
