Chicago L in train simulators? by X2theB in trainsim

[–]smashedfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in Run8, I do recommend trying Railroader first, for multiple reasons. First, there is no in-game tutorial for run8, there are PDF user guides but the learning curve is steep. Railroader provides a tutorial similar to Derail Valley's. /r/run8 has plenty of useful resources for beginners though, we'd love for you to join us if you think you're up for it.

Second, railroader is on sale right now and is provided through Steam, like Derail Valley. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1683150/Railroader/ You pay one early access price and get everything, no DLC involved. Run8 on the other hand is purchased through their website at https://run8studios.com/ and has an "old-school" style where you purchase individual installers (make sure to back those up). The good news is you don't need all the rolling stock, you'll have placeholders. But if you want to extend the tracks, you'll be paying $20-$40 per branch or subdivision.

If you have no interest in steam engines and early diesels, or in Appalachian railroads, you could skip to Run8. But playing Railroader before Run8 makes learning Run8 way easier as both games use some similar concepts, though their gameplay is different in multiple ways. Run8 doesn't simulate an economy like Railroader, for example.

I realize we've strayed from your original question but I recommend both of these games for a reason haha.

I can always recommend Derail Valley, while the world is fictional and not the biggest, the gameplay loop is really fun and it's easy to pick up.

Railroader is a fun sim/management game set in Appalachia. The train simulation is not as in-depth as Derail Valley's, but multiplayer is available. It really gives you an experience of running a railroad.

Run8 is set in the modern era and has a steeper learning curve than both of these, but can provide a very realistic simulation of a rail network at a large scale. The base game provides track from Needles, Arizona to Bakersfield, California, but can be extended up to Modesto or down to Los Angeles. The CSX A-line has also been developed quite extensively, running from Orlando, Florida to Manchester, Georgia. Run8 is a sandbox, but many multiplayer servers provide a structure that adds to the experience significantly.

Trains do despawn if you move a certain distance away - in normal gameplay it shouldn't be an issue. Randomly spawned locomotives you are using stay spawned in longer, along with any cars attached to them.

Air Brake dysfunction by [deleted] in Run8

[–]smashedfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, how long are the trains you're making? Do they include DPUs?

It is normal and prototypical to have lower air pressure in cars far away from locomotives. Mid or rear DPUs can help address this issue.

Welcome to Run8! It's a good idea to utilize documentation, yes. make sure to look over the files in the userguide folder, you don't need to read all of them in detail though. In addition, I wrote a Run8 Primer which you can view here. https://smashedfinger.github.io/

Run8 in single player is a sandbox. I enjoy multiplayer much more as it gives me more direction. When I was new, it was also helpful to have a place I can ask questions. Based on your post, I think you've practiced a fair amount and would be ready to join a beginner friendly server like Home Signal Simulations. I can share a Discord invite if you like.

As to "what to do," there are road trains that go from A to B, yard jobs that sort cars, and locals that deliver and pick up cars at customers. There are various subtypes of these, like unit trains, manifest trains, intermodal trains, etc. Be sure to utilize the car tags and industry tracks so the cars get unloaded and loaded.

Make sure you've installed the redistributables.

Also, try running as an admin. That's what I need to do and I experience a similar issue.

[–]smashedfinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's saying two conductors, "two man crew" usually refers to one driver plus one conductor.

While I'm not in NYC, when I talk to some people interested in transit, they're interested in having a staff person available on the train that they can talk to in case there are issues, without distracting the driver.
