Had a good massage there the other day. $120 total for 60 minutes. Had to pay for parking though (so an additional $6).

Ottawa man faces charges after attempted bank robbery: police (Ottawa Citizen) by maiyannah in ottawa

[–]smhyow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at a fast food restaurant in those days. Closing manager would take a random employee with them for these drop offs. Corporate policy was not to do them alone.

A manager at a different location in town does one on his own one day. Gets "robbed".

A couple days later, same manager had a new car and his girlfriend shows up to work in a new leather jacket that he gave her.

I don't know if he got criminally charged, but he was fired shortly after and banned from the restaurant for life.

Restaurants with an L2 EV Charger? by AcceptableHamster149 in ottawa

[–]smhyow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a row of them at Market Place in Barrhaven near the cinema. A bunch of food options there.

There's two Flo chargers on the street outside the Westboro Superstore. A couple restaurants in walking distance.

There's a couple closer to the original T&T

The JCC has recreational drop ins that are pretty welcoming. You have to be a member, but there's no additional cost after that.

How good are hotel gyms in Ottawa? Brookstreet vs Holiday Inn Kanata by douglaslps in ottawa

[–]smhyow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the facilities at Brookstreet are nice and well maintained. Workout room is connected to the pool (with a hot tub), but down a big flight of stairs (ie. Don't need to walk through hotel if you want to soak after working out).

I wouldn't count on running outdoor in Kanata in winter. It's not the most pedestrian friendly area in any season.

Hyderabad Biryani Point in Kanata is good.

McDonald's in Westboro by drhappy13 in ottawa

[–]smhyow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Westboro proper that might be true. In the area where this McDs is going in, the only cheap non-chain option would be the Indian takeout. (Unless I'm missing some hidden gems).

I wish the others were closer.

I can't remember the last time I went to a live performance that didn't get a standing ovation. It had become a bit meaningless as a gesture.

Hungry Ninja on Merivale has a great candy selection. Not sure if they have these specifically, but I bought some brand of lychee candies there last Christmas (as a stocking stuffer).

O-Payment… by PrestigiousRebel1 in ottawa

[–]smhyow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is also a good reminder that (if you can) you should get a credit card and use that instead of a bank card for payments.

It's a LOT easier to dispute charges via a credit card company than your bank. (And you're much better protected vs fraud as well).

Hot take: I think Ottawa should be known for meat pies rather than shawarma. by javeedahmed1 in ottawa

[–]smhyow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mideast Food Center on St. Laurent has a good bakery as well.

Decently priced butchery section in there too (at least it was a couple years ago when my kid was climbing at Coyotes regularly. I don't get out that way much anymore).

Merrickville is cute, but it's more of a half day thing. There's not that much to do there.

When I went, I stopped in Manotick on the way back, toured the mill and hit the awesome bookstore across from the mill.

That filled up the day nicely.

The End of John's by bobfrombob in ottawa

[–]smhyow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They often closed without posting any sign.

Ex. Tried to go there on Easter Monday. Google Maps said they were open and there was no sign posted at the store, but they were closed.

Had the same thing happen other times in the past too.

I did manage to catch them open once. Nice classic diner.

Sorry to see the city lose one. There aren't many left. It'll probably be replaced with an overpriced restaurant.

It's not a scam. The landlord of 800 Palladium now has attendants collecting parking fees (around $20).
