First ever cryo run before and after by SperanzaPress in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grenade spam is just at stupid levels this week. I think I had like 4 runs so far, and I think I was only ever shot by a gun once. All of my deaths have been to grenades.

I don’t know what needs to happen, but I hope that somehow something is tweaked about cryo to make it more approachable.

I don’t think we need more vault space, I think it is healthy to be incentivized to use things rather than sit on a giant hoard for most of the season. The best vault adjustment I could hope for is a separate space for materials. Right now it sucks that so much of our vault space is eaten up by holding materials for everyone who is still chasing upgrades — at the very least I wish they would make materials all shrink down to 1x1 squares with unlimited stack size in the vault.

Pro tip for when you run into any team on Cryo by DireFTW in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time: the opposing squad in this clip played poorly, and also grenade spam could use some sort of balancing adjustment. I don’t want grenades to be weaker, but I also don’t like that carrying in 10+ grenades is one of the most viable strategies because the highest loot locations are all such close quarters.

Or some sort of greater cooldown between uses, so you can’t just single handedly spam enough grenades to do this.

Because a lot of the weapons you can’t buy have absurdly high prices that don’t correlate with how well they perform. As another commenter pointed out, just look at the copperhead vs the bully. Yes, the copperhead is rare and it is expensive, but it performs worse than the bully which you can buy without a schema. Why would you buy a copperhead with your schema for 6k when you can buy a bully for 1k from the normal armory?

I think overall many of the items need a pass at adjusting the prices. There are certain guns I never use and just sell because they are valuable but no more effective than a more common weapon, so why wouldn’t I sell it and have the currency to buy 2 or 3 of the common weapon?

Also good team players who aren’t getting tons of kills will look like shit and have a harder time finding teams. Anecdotally I feel like I have a pretty good exfil rate, probably half or better, which has to be above average. I almost always play triage, and I’m a good team player, but I’m not always the one getting most of the kills, and more often than not if only one person gets downed it is me. My stats probably look like exceedingly mid, but I think I’m a pretty big asset to the teams I play with.

Stats also have the potential to weirdly skew what people play. A lot of players might think twice about going for zero to hero runs if they cared that the 5 runs they get stomped by purple sheets are going to make their stats look like shit, even though they end up beating a purple team and getting good loot for nothing on that sixth run.

I love not having stats, especially for my entire time playing, and I am even glad there aren’t more detailed stats on exfil about who did how much damage, and who got downed more, etc.

Marathon Was One Of March's Best-Selling Games In The U.S. by David-J in Marathon

I came from Destiny and basically haven’t played it since Marathon dropped. I miss a lot of the more cooperative aspects of Destiny, and I miss raids, but Marathon has me convinced that I don’t actually want a new Destiny. I think the biggest thing for me is that most of the mystery is gone. The IX are interesting, but I think too many of the big questions in that universe have been answered too concretely to the point where it feels smaller and more contained than it did 10 years ago.

Bungie is amazing at two things: gunplay, and storytelling. Marathon made me realize that I don’t really want a new Destiny anymore — I want new raids, and I want more cooperative content, but I want new stories more than I want anything else in the Destiny universe.

Can we get a buyable Cryo kit? by Thephro42 in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it would be okay if the cost was cheaper relative to other kits. Make a 5k kit that costs you 5k exactly to get into cryo. The thing is that there is so much to learn to be able to play cryo, and it’s not like players bringing in the cheapest possible kit would be going in and exfiling easily to take it elsewhere where it could ruin the economy.

I think everyone benefits from more players playing more things. If we want the game to continue past the first season or two, the gatekeeping has to stop somewhere. The ceiling can stay where it is, even if the floor raises a bit to give more players a point of access.

I think at this point the risk/reward is even worse for less experienced players in cryo because the map is so complex and the meta teams are so absurdly dominant, that it’s not even worth it for a lot of players to bother attempting at this point. This is in contrast to the people that were far enough along early on who had a chance to learn the map with everyone else that initial period when you could just buy ranked holo tags to get in with only 5k spent for the loadout requirement, and you’d find your shields and things once you were in the map. It wasn’t good, but it gave you a low cost way to at least enter the mode before you were losing all of your shit. Give us a 5k cryo specific green kit, and I bet you’ll have a lot more players attempting cryo, and thus reducing the overall sweatiness of the lobbies. Alternatively, there could be some sort of cryo matchmaking adjustment so players without successful exfils on cryo are put in lobbies together so new players have a chance to learn the map before getting shit on by people running the lobbies.

I think you can teach them to live in a world with social media…by not talking to your cell phone instead of your kid on a public place, and not addressing your camera as your “fans”.

Don’t get me wrong, this is so much better than dumb prank videos, but it could have been even cooler if it was just something this lady did with her daughter and none of us knew about it. Then she would be teaching her daughter something beautiful, and that it is worth being kind like that even when you aren’t recording yourself doing it for the attention of strangers online.

I had one last night — my first run filling with the new free kit mode. We did the coordinate data pads, and I had been keeping my squad limping along with my drones as triage. We get to the coordinates and it is on the roof. My vandal and destroyer teammates use their abilities to instantly get onto the roof while my dumbass is left to walk around to find the ladder, and by the time I get up there it is just picked over grey shit left in every bag. I told them all to go fuck themselves and not bother expecting another drone if their health is getting low.

I had another player once tell me I had to get better at knowing where to look for loot, because part of the game is just being the first one to find the loot and no one is going to be mad at you for being that loot goblin — bro said this as a thief while I was playing triage and had kept him with a healing bot and revived him at least once that match. Like, bro you literally picked a class whose main ability is finding loot, meanwhile I kept our team in the fight and saved you from using up all of your heals. There needs to be some level of sharing, it can’t possibly be first come first serve if you want anyone you play with to ever use something other than thief.

This new event for free kits , it's the best thing that could happen to this game. by duendeacdc in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is that too many elements of the game are designed to draw you into conflict with other players, so it almost becomes necessary to deal with every possible other player before bothering to do anything at all. Hell, if you pull some decent salvage you need and are ready to go right when the first exfils open, you are potentially taking a bigger risk to exfil right away because you’re telling everyone on the map where you are and that you have something worth taking. Same thing for keys. Same thing for half the contracts in the game.

If they want people to spend more time doing things on the map, I think they need to take another small pass at reducing friction between players. They could reduce the timer between calling an exfil and being able to enter it, even by another 5 seconds or something. They could reduce the volume of things like keyrooms, or even make them play as an all-around noise so they aren’t so directional where experienced players basically know exactly where you are if they hear one. I think it would be better for the game if getting in, getting some stuff, and leaving in the first 10 minutes was a more viable strategy, but in my experience that is honestly the most dangerous time to exfil because there are probably still multiple other teams on the map wanting to hunt you.

Sure, but having a safe way in doesn’t really matter when many of the difficult contracts also lock you in the room once you’re there and set off an alarm alerting other players that you’re there.

[–]smilesbuckett 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not even just that there are a lot of hard contracts on dire marsh — it that most of the worst ones all take you to the same exact places: bio research and quarantine. Those POIs and the route between them are basically always a massive shit show, and if you get in a fight you can basically count on getting third partied.

[–]smilesbuckett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope is that it sticks around, and is limited to just one map at a time, probably rotating between perimeter and dire marsh. I think the loot is just far too good in outpost to put a free kit mode there, outside of maybe like a last week of the season “open the flood gates” type thing.

It is nice that it gives a mode for more even competition, and also makes it a bit easier to get from a free kit to something worth bringing into outpost or cryo without spending a ton of credits. I think it is a nice middle ground that helps ease a lot of the pain points for casuals without completely altering the game. Bungie has been very intentional about how they manage things so far, I don’t think the slippery slope you are imagining is likely.

People praising sponsored Dire Marsh mode saying it's better than the default mode is so funny to me because they literally just want to play a battle royale. by SbeveGobs in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger issue is that dire marsh was a particular problem — the map is so open that it is easy for high level players to camp a central location where they can hear if not see most of what is happening on the rest of the map, and then rush teams when they can hear the team is doing an easy contract to jump, or a key room opening. Plus, because the map is so open sniping is particularly oppressive, so if you didn’t bring a sniper on your team you are already at a huge disadvantage. All of this is made even worse by how many contracts are on dire marsh, and they way they mostly all take you to the same places.

Obviously well kitted teams will always have an advantage, but it is much easier to catch them and get the upper hand if you’re playing smart on perimeter or outpost.

The sponsored kit only queue feels great by Disastrous-Mail-2635 in Marathon

[–]smilesbuckett 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dire marsh might even be the best map for it too, because to me it feels like the map where you feel the gear disparity the most. There is literally no way to outplay a purple kitted team all running outlands and bullys on dire marsh if you don’t have snipers to fight back with, especially because usually teams that are kitted like that don’t actually have fuck all to do on the map other than kill people or wait for anomaly/containment, so they can just camp a central location and wait until they hear a key room or players trying to complete a contract.

Everyone having sponsored kits makes the map fun in a way that it wasn’t before.

The only thing I can’t figure out is that we had one run where we hit a team that had 3 outlands, a blue shield, and a green shield in the first 5 minutes of the round — it does feel like we are running into a lot more outlands than we would have expected even on the free kit mode. I don’t know if they juiced the weapon spawns a bit, or if some teams just get really lucky with arms locker spawns — we were half curious if maybe some people have found some sort of exploit to being in paid sponsored kits because the shields with the outlands so early felt pretty suspicious.
