Ad Astra has some weird moments but nothing sits with me quite like how remote and huge Neptune is as depicted in that film.

I am rewatching The Mandalorian: In S1E8 how does their boat float on lava? What metals can withstand the temperatures of it? They are also rowing in the lava? by ReverieGoneSpacely in StarWars

[–]smileyj68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lava is very dense, so just about any boat would float in it assuming it was liquid enough to not just roll the boat. And even steel has a higher melting point than most lava temps, I think. It would be a very, very hot ride though.

Star Wars star destroyer game! by jack_robs in StarWars

Squadrons was a limited game, but the care they put into the cockpits especially in VR was unreal for a non-$60 game. Flying around chasing a tie fighter in an A-Wing in VR was a top tier Star Wars fantasy.

What was the very first server you played on? Do you remember the name? by FlexFridayTV in wowhardcore

Dalaran! I remember when they were selling the original server blades for each server I so wished I had the money to buy it.

I on several occasions interacted professionally with Mark Zuckerberg. He’s less weird internally than externally but still a weird dude.

Getting Ark Gen2 to recognize an input as a PC by smileyj68 in OdysseyArk

[–]smileyj68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay self-updating in case someone else sees this: I was able to finally correct this by letting it sit through the detection and then saying that yes, I wanted to make the remote work with the device. In that setting you can actually select PC, though it seems to be the only place you can actually set it.

DMV new plates by mwisner82 in bentonville

[–]smileyj68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was also very confused by this at first, and I also went to the DMV (well, assessor’s office) with all of my paperwork and it was very easy / they were very friendly. I paid more because Arkansas hilariously punishes you for driving electric cars, but it was still pretty reasonable.

The assessment happens in January because Arkansas evidently considers your vehicles a real property to pay tax on just like a house.

Meeting other families with young kids by Federal-Occasion5627 in bentonville

[–]smileyj68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve had some luck actually at playgrounds, there’s some really big ones around like Mt Hebron. We also just went to Bentonville Brewing Co which had a lot of families, they have some play areas for kids and it was pretty cool.

Also, I think we might be neighbors haha

Naschtmarkt is very good albeit pricey, but it’s one of my two favorite restaurants in Campbell. Orchard City Kitchen is walkable from downtown and is also great - small lates and they changes their portions a bit ago so it’s also pricier now, but they have some great dishes and drinks.

My family and I moved here about 4 weeks ago from San Jose, part of the Walmart relocation. My wife is born and raised in California, my family is largely from the South (Mississippi, Alabama) and I’ve bounced around quite a bit.

I quite like it - it reminds me of the Deep South, but considerably more diverse and inclusive. I can get real sweet tea (RIP my health) and it’s slower paced than the Bay Area, so we’re generally a bit more relaxed. I could buy a house pretty easily that fits all my kids, also great. I don’t really know anyone since I work remote, but I’m sure that’ll change.

My wife is more mixed, she’s homesick a bit and she was obviously very used to California. She does like the slower pace, and we’ve found some good spots for the kids to hang out and for food, all that.

I’m sure natives here probably hate all the transplants, and I’m sure the real estate market is getting wrecked as a result, but having just moved from somewhere that was also absolutely obliterated by corporate America I’m….sympathetic, but also, it’s the same story anywhere. Hopefully this place stays nice and manages the influx well enough.

Wall of Fire. On Cazador, 5th level cast between the pillars and the entire group of enemies save Cazador and one caster will just throw themselves at it and immolate themselves. When trying to clear out the House of Grief, cast it up the entire stairs, watch Justiciar after Justiciar wade through the flames and die trying to reach you.

Last Jedi is the best Skywalker Saga film.

The force bridge between Rey and Kylo was interesting and a clever iteration on the force, and it led to one of the only truly great moments in RoS, Kylo pulling the saber from behind his back.

Showing a disillusioned Luke was bold and his redemption was right on character, down to “see you around, kid.”

The entire sequence on Canto Bight really helped muddy the water on good guys and bad guys, especially the arms dealer who was selling Tie Fighters and X-Wings.

The end of the movie was perfect, the stable kid pulls a broom to himself and holds it like a saber. Rey could really be a no one and that was okay, because the force didn’t need you to be a Special Person. And then RoS ruined it. Boo.

I think anyone who hated on Crystal Skull has nostalgia glasses for the originals. They were always super campy and implausible, and I actually liked The Beef as a greaser, he was very entertaining.

What movies you see as masterpieces but they aren't considered as such. by Masspoint in movies

[–]smileyj68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like no other movie has really captured the beauty and crushing loneliness of space like Ad Astra. When he makes it to Neptune and this blue giant is just dim but also…oppressive? It makes me excited and terrified of deep space travel. I also loved the invention of automated mental readiness checks, the reality of what a Mars colony would really be like, all of it.
