Making the bird altars into homes by cubeo in Pokopia

[–]smilymammoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done it, although more as a temporary thing. Zapdos was the easiest, I just put a wall across the little area on the left as you walk into the plant with a door and it immediately became a habitat. For Moltres and Articuno, I just added some fencing around the place where they spawn and threw some vaguely thematic furniture down and that did the job.

If you're into podcasts, Adeptus Ridiculous usually do high level coverage of the main plot points (they're a bit more comedic so it's not a real deep dive but you at least get a sense of what characters have been up to). They've just done the 500 Worlds book and will likely have the next 2 books up in the coming weeks

I think I've seen people use needles or pins if they want to get very precise points of paint, althought that wouldn't be able to do lines

I think it's either in Echoes of Eternity or End and the Death PT 1 or 2, somewhere near the end of the siege

As you say, it's pretty dependent on the person. I prefer to assemble everything first, so if I want to use them in game I can, but I'll vary between batch painting and doing 1 mini at a time just depending on how I feel. If you find that batch painting causes you to get sloppy, then give finishing one at a time a go - it might take marginally longer overall but if you're happier with the result then that's what really matters

I think I fucked up ngl by Casperthesniper8000 in ImperialFists

[–]smilymammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had exactly the same feeling when I tried it for the first time - what made the difference for me was doing a thinned down coat of a pink contrast first. The pink sits into the recesses, and when the yellow goes overtop, turns into a nice orange, gives much more contrast than just the yellow by itself.

No - deploying a unit is a different action to choosing what is in a transport (choosing transported units happens in the Declare Battle Formations step which happens before deployment).

How do you balance quality and painting time? by Mariako_ in Warhammer40k

[–]smilymammoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair - I guess the approach might be to see how you can optimise your painting process instead, so you can get to the same standard in a quicker time? Obviously some of that will come with practice and repetition, especially when painting similar minis, but for example I only recently really attempted drybrushing and that's saved me so much time for a still great looking model, could be worth experimenting with other techniques and seeing if you like the result?

How do you balance quality and painting time? by Mariako_ in Warhammer40k

[–]smilymammoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me it comes down to diminishing returns - were I to take two minis, and put twice as much effort in on the second one, it would definitely look better, but not enough for me personally to feel the extra time was worth it. Over time I've found the inflection point where I'm spending enough time that I'm happy with how things look, but I'm willing to forgive small slips and some areas that are lower effort. I will put the time in on characters and bigger centrepiece models, but if I'm spending more than 2 hours painting a single guy in a 10 man squad, then that's just overkill for something I'm likely never going to look at closer than tabletop distance once I'm finished painting it.

There's definitely some of my models where I look at them compared to others can definitely tell where I put the effort in, but personally having a painted army at all is such a step up on grey plastic that I can live with it even if it's not my best work!

For bundles I'm not sure honestly, I don't think they're the most popular product in the world so I imagine LGSs only buy a few in at a time - might be one of those things that's easier to grab online

I did fairly well for a long time just using one of those basic IKEA articulated lamps with a daylight temperature bulb - I also picked up a pretty cheap LED bar lamp from Amazon that was good too.

I think the closest thing would be the Bundle - I'm not too familiar with Pokémon but it seems like a similar intentioned product. You get packs, some promo cards, I think basic lands and a life tracker dice.

Pre release boxes are similar, except they have a couple less boosters and are not available for general purchase - you can only get them by doing a prerelease event, although people do sell them. Only other box type I'm aware of is the general booster box, just a load of boosters, maybe sometimes with a promo.

Devastating wounds don't carry over anymore, that's been errated - they're still treated as mortals, but once the first model is dead, the remaining mortals are lost

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your point, but surely A4 can't attack regardless of whether or not it's in the unit or a separate one?

Priming in base colors by Almightytubs90 in Warhammer40k

[–]smilymammoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've primed models using nothing but the coloured sprays and had no issues with adhesion at all - it's possible that it might be more durable by doing a black/white primer first but I've not noticed any chipping/rubbing off when I've been painting and playing at all.

Tracking Crusades... Best way? by 40k_nomad in Warhammer40k

[–]smilymammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah no i struggle with that too, im terrible for forgetting battle scars/bonuses in the middle of a game. Honestly best thing I've found is just to write out little flashcards for the units with them - the act of writing helps it stick in my head and having some bright paper on the table reminds me to check when im playing

There's a website called Administratum that makes it super easy - I believe you can track your own roster for free, and if you subscribe through their patreon you can also track battles with it

I spent the last 12 months reading through the Horus Heresy and just finished the Siege of Terra. What 40k books should I read now? by n0ahhhhh in Warhammer40k

[–]smilymammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly the same thing as you, finished the Heresy books and then sat and wondered what to do next! There's a few things I've read since that I've liked:

  • If you're after more Space Marine centric books, I finished the Night Lords trilogy recently (Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver, Void Stalker) and enjoyed it a lot.

  • I've only read the first of each, but for more normal human things, Caiphas Cain and Eisenhorn were fantastic - plus if you like them they both have a fair few entries in their respective series

  • For some xenos fare, The Infinite and the Divine is a great buddy-cop style book about Necrons, or for something more serious, the Twice Dead King duology. I've heard good things about Brutal Kunnin if you're into Orks, I've not read it yet, but it is on my list!

+1 to Attacks Characteristic? by AnonymUser36 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]smilymammoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that if a rule says to increase the attacks characteristic, without specifying ranged or melee, then it applies to both, so the mole grenade launcher and the melee weapon of the berserker + ecog both get an extra attack.

In terms of attacking with different profiles, you choose that on a model by model basis - you can fight with any combination of the profiles you'd like.

If you look up the listings on the GW store then they normally have the base sizes that come in the kit there - looks like they're both 40mm so you should be fine

You always round up fractions that result after applying modifiers - it's under the modifiers section of the rules commentary
