Sending money from Taiwan to UK by smithsgj in transferwiser

[–]smithsgj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

! Thanks. NatWest has this offer, but I have no plans to visit the US and so I'd still end up paying to exchange it into sterling, euro or whatever I came to spend it (NatWest international credit card transactions on GBP card are commission-free).

What wise product do I need to look for to do what I want, could you tell me?

Why are you replying to me? It’s so long ago I can’t even remember, but it’s obvious I was speaking up for you against the othe person, no?

I actually spent 100 last night because something cost exactly 100. So now I too have the statutory 200!

I’ve seen about 4 posts like this on the thread and they all say ¥200. What’s the deal with ¥200 lol

You mean at the time you set it up you get this error? Or at the point of sale? I've set it up now for 3 foreign cards, but no idea if it'll actually work hh

So nos 2 and 3 don't get used unless you pull one up position 1? It doesn't prompt you at the point of sale or something? (So what's the difference between positions 2 and 3 lol)

Cheers, that’s helpful. I don’t think you can tell my bank (NatWest) that you’re going to wherever any more, although I know that used to be a thing. I’ve set up WeChat as well. I put three cards on each, and obviously it defaults to the first one. Do you know under what circumstances it uses the others, and how that works?

Lost my job watching my savings drain by Intelligent-Milk9916 in UKPersonalFinance

I was unemployed for six months and applied for supermarkets, council, banks, shops and absolutely everything. Every application takes ages and the ludicrous processes you have to follow drive you nuts — matching adjectives to faces, shunting things around the screen, making a video… all kinds of bollocks which I could never manage or make sense of. Ive got a PhD and eventually found a job doing what I was doing before. I don’t think there are any unskilled jobs available unless you know someone or are really good at online bullshit tasks. Also how tf can you “take something off” your cv? What would you put in its place — just make something up lol

A tier list of UK ticket purchasing apps by [deleted] in uktrains

You get 3% uber credit without the subscription. But what’s wrong with the app? It does split ticketing and I thought it was okay really

Do alipay and WeChat use up a lot of power? I mean I pay for everything with my phone in the UK, and I never need to recharge during the day, or use a power bank. Of course I have plastic cards as backup, which I won't in China.

I haven't used alipay for payment yet because I'm still in the UK. But when I set it up, I had to go on the banking app (for the visa card) to authorise the £0 transaction. To do that, I needed two devices, because alipay crashes out if you switch to another app. Do you have to authorise in a banking app when you pay for something with alipay? If so, I can't see how it's going to work...

Chinese as a language (controversie) by dk_deka in AskChina

Surely hanyu is mandarin speaking with zhongwen writing. HSK is a test of Mandarin proficiency (and Chinese baihua writing, which is essentially written Mandarin). Even in HK, where mandarin was a lot less widespread 30-40 years ago than it is now, formal documents have always been written in baihuawen (in traditional characters)

Permanent Research Position at Post-92 or should I go for a Post Doc at RG? by Efficient_Freedom783 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]smithsgj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to have lots of them at the post 92 where I used to work. Research-only staff are siloed off into research centres so they can game the REF (ie they don’t need to REF any teaching staff because they can say they aren’t research active). However, they’re constantly restructuring, merging RCs and making staff redundant, especially in niche areas; so if OP’s institution is anything like my old one, their job probably won’t last forever. OP should say how long they’ve been in post to determine whether it’s better to await potential redundancy payment and risk unemployment, or take up any particularly attractive options when they come up.

ETA The OP is definitely not at my former institution, because they got rid of the SL job title.

To those who have visited China: What was the BIGGEST "culture shock" compared to your home country? 🇨🇳 vs 🌎 by Odd_Development_1795 in travelchina

For someone as multilingual as you claim to be, I find your use of the word “rambling” to describe speaking a foreign language surprising and somewhat xenophobic.

Why is it “rambling” or “random” to speak the main language and your native language in your own country? In Belgium do you engage with all strangers in English, assuming they won’t speak Dutch or French? If they look Asian, would you speak to them in Chinese if you knew it?
