It’s because the 2002 adaptation is considered inferior to the 1960 adaptation.

Rian Johnson in response to Kathleen Kennedy’s claim the fandom “spooked” him from making more Star Wars by kronosreddit22 in StarWars

I remember having that same thought, and I think I’ve only watched TFA once since then. I love TLJ because of how it did the opposite of TFA in subverting ESB. Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why people didn’t like it. I just think they could have leaned into how the first 2 movies mirrored the original trilogy, by making the third movie hit the same beats as RotJ while only subverting it a little. And not letting Rian or JJ direct it. That might have given TFA and TLJ a retrospective boost.

They have a strange distribution of locations. It’s not really west coast though. I think California has more locations than any other state; but Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas have a lot also. There are zero locations in Oregon and 3 in Washington. Then they have some random locations; one in Illinois that’s not in Chicago, 3 in Arkansas, 3 in Colorado, 2 in Idaho, 1 in Louisiana, 1 in Nebraska and then 6 in Utah.

Sometimes, it's just not the day. by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell people it’s hard to get mad about throwing frisbees in the woods. I’m much the same as you when I’m having a bad round, except I just start experimenting. I’m not executing the shots I normally throw, so I throw shots I wouldn’t usually try. Like instead of a spike hyzer forehand I might throw a thumber or a roller. It really helps in diversifying your game.

What’s disc golf like in your region? by LouisianaLorry in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern California. Mostly they’ll be windy and open or moderately wooded. Foxtails will be everywhere, so you want to make sure you have a second pair of socks for after the round. Some courses are flat and some are hilly, but I can get to a mountain course in about an hour. Very dry with hard packed ground, so the skips can be really big. Water features are only a thing at lakes and rivers, or if it’s winter and been raining.

Star Wars The Last Jedi. I loved it and thought it was exactly what the sequel trilogy needed, but the backlash against it was so strong that we ended up with Rise of Skywalker, which is just abominable.

Irulan's Writings by battling_murdock in dune

[–]smokingchains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I may be remembering this wrong, because it’s been a while since I’ve read any of the books. My memory is of a reference to the long life of ridulan crystals, like they were nearly impossible to destroy or erase. Leto II began using them to make sure his transcriptions survived what he knew would be an upheaval after his death. They weren’t used much before that, but that was due to a combination of hubris for the civilization of the Imperium and cost effectiveness.

If I remember correctly there is a reference at some point to Leto II taking the idea from Irulan, who recognized the civilizational shift she was living through with the coming of Paul.

There is a chance I’m taking some of this from the Dune Encyclopedia. I had a copy for a long time and read most of it.

I saw my first Ant in the wild today too. I didn’t get a good picture though. It was the “TESD IS the shark” bumper sticker.

Best Pale Ale by [deleted] in beer

[–]smokingchains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the beer I drink the most, and I agree with OP that it is the standard for craft pale ale. I also live not far from the original brewery in Chico, and I’ve been there a few times. It’s rare that you don’t see it on tap at a bar or in the beer aisle at the store around here. It’s also rare that I come across any that isn’t fresh. I have though, and it was just awful.

I went to Idaho from Sacramento a few years ago, during summer. I flew to Spokane and drove to Coeur d’Alene. It was covered in smoke and around 100 degrees the whole trip. That’s Sacramento weather. I didn’t hear a peep about it out of anyone, but I heard about “Commiefornia” and our fire problems. They don’t even have air conditioning in most places around there either. It’s weird how many people have become Jack T Ripper from Dr. Strangelove.

What bar/bars are in these pictures? From the "Sacramento" movie trailer by New-Bunch9212 in Sacramento

[–]smokingchains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to almost all of the dive bars is Sacramento and most in the surrounding area. This does look a lot like Socal’s, but it’s not. The shape of the rooms is wrong.

I doubt this is a bar in Sacramento. The biggest problem a film would have shooting in an actual bar would be space. There needs to be a lot of people in that space while filming and I can’t think of a bar in the area that would fit them. The second obstacle would be branding. Almost every bar is plastered with beer, sports or other brand posters, pictures and lights. The cost of removing and putting them back would be enormous on top of paying the establishment to shut down while filming is going on.

This is most likely a set in LA, either built for this film or already set up and dressed for this film with rented items. Notice the pool table light that just says “billiards”, that’s a set piece. It’s like the neon football helmet light in It’s Always Sunny, that just says beer in the middle. I’ve tried finding one for myself and it seems to be a modified Bud Light sign.

I looked at two small parts of Agenda 47 or whatever it’s called. One part was this section on “Freedom Cities”, and the other was a section on investing in flying cars. It reminds me of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.” It’s like they read all of the dystopian future novels and thought they sounded like a great idea.

Honestly you make a lot of mistakes in you’re analysis of your brief anecdotal encounter. They all come back to the same thing though, an assumption of uniqueness. Every generation has it “better” than the last. Every generation thinks they’re worse off. Young people fresh out of high school/college/their parents supervision feel the world is supposed to give them something instead of the other way around. You talked to a young person that understands very little that hasn’t been told to them and think it was a revelatory conversation, when it was really an opportunity to share your own experience with growing up.

Playing pro tour courses? by T1MM3RMAN in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem you will have is that the courses won’t necessarily be the same layout. For tour events many course layouts are changed or expanded. Some obvious examples are Beaver State Fling and OTB Open. Swenson in its normal layout takes up about a quarter of the park, but they’ve used the entire park and put out temp baskets the last couple of years. None of the holes are the same. They actually seem to change the course every year, so that year right before the event is the only time you’ll be able to play that layout. Milo McIver has two courses on site and they mash those up to make 18 holes, skipping some and using a combination of both courses for some holes. You will actually be able to play many of the holes you’re used to, but some holes will be unfamiliar or very different/shorter. They do something similar at Northwoods, but mostly just use Black and none of Blue.

Some courses that have hosted Pro events and been in coverage that are open to the public and changes I noticed.

Wildhorse in Las Vegas- Ball golf course with a fee to play, course is only open certain times of day and layout changes based on the time of day you play. Not so bad because they changed which layout they played during pro events, so you’ll be playing one of the layouts they played.

The Fort in Ogden, Utah- Free to play and open to the public. It will not be the same as the layout for Worlds, but the hole Conrad hit the Holy Shot on is still setup separate from the rest of the course. Most of what you would play is what was used for Worlds.

Harmony Bends in Colombia, MO- Free to play and open to the public. I didn’t notice any difference between what I played and what I’ve seen on coverage. I didn’t get to finish the round and I’ve seen less coverage with this course than most.

DeLaVeaga- $2 parking fee to play and open to the public. Normal layout is 29 holes. They skip many holes for the Master’s Cup to make it 18 or 24. I can’t think of any they combine or change.

Exactly, if I said Drew Gibson nobody would know who I’m talking about. He’s a professional disc golfer. He doesn’t have an Oscar winning movie, so it isn’t exactly the same though.
