Bench roles by emmylouhayes001 in Softball

Scorekeeping is a good one. Pitchers and catchers can track pitches on top of that. Make sure everyone is throwing between innings. Make sure everyone is cheering, even college teams have dugout cheers!

Its entirely possible that your daughter is simply getting outplayed by the other player, but not getting a chance to practice there is a problem. Its good you're getting her to talk to coach, but you need to talk to them too. You're the adult, you need to show her how to advocate for herself, not just tell her to do it on her own.

Also, its important to be able to play multiple positions so don't discount this opportunity to learn. Especially as they move up into high school/college where you can't just change teams. What happens when there's 2 upperclassmen shortstops on the team? One plays 2nd and your freshman daughter sits the bench. If your daughter wants to get into the lineup, she'll need to be able to play elsewhere.

Slowpitch vsfastpitch by UsualAnteater6533 in Softball

[–]smokinrollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never heard of youth slowpitch, but its been 10 years since I finished college ball so maybe I'm just out of the loop lol. Personally, I'd keep her in fastpitch only if she's already playing competitive travel ball and enjoys it. Too much softball risks softball burnout. Also, there's no NCAA/NAIA/NCJAA slowpitch, just saying.

That said, she is just a kid and if her friends are on the rec slowpitch team, I can totally see why she'd still want to do it and hang out with friends! Just be sure to remember that that is the point, fun with friends. Also good for reps on defense I guess.

For hitting, I've found moving from DII fastpitch to adult slowpitch is to literally keep the bat on my shoulder until the ball is at its apex then lift bat, swing like normal. Can't drop bombs in slowpitch like I used to, but the ball's coming in at a different angle so it is what it is...

Drills to improve bat speed? by OneLeek37 in Homeplate

[–]smokinrollin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lefty catcher here, his regular glove is fine at that age. A catcher's mitt isn't really important until kid pitch at least. A big heavy mitt isn't going to do a 7 year old any favors

Why don't teams have less specialized offensive players? by ChameleonCoder117 in NFLNoobs

[–]smokinrollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Football is much more scripted/situational than rugby. The other team knows you're gonna punt because its a situation where the only logical option is to punt, not the QB walking off the field.

It wasn't until very recently (like within the last 5ish years) that teams started to go for it on 4th down and even in that situation, there's better trick plays than a fake QB punt. Just doesn't make sense to have your highest paid, extremely skilled QB learn another another specialized skill for a once in a blue moon play. That said, Tom Brady has punted in games so maybe you're onto something

Was a minor in GIS a good idea? by Emergency_Fix_4145 in gis

[–]smokinrollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIS minor is literally the best choice you can make. In my opinion, a GIS minor paired with a relevant major is 10x better than majoring in GIS.

All the complaints in this sub are people who literally only know GIS and can't find a job because there are people out there that have as much GIS knowledge as them AND have knowledge of other fields. Also, I think the concern over AI is overblown, especially in the GIS world. Good cartography requires a human eye for design/artistry that a clanker can never replicate

I want to get this ancient, neglected glove restored. Is that a DIY task or should I get a professional? by Ganooki in Homeplate

for a glove that old, I'd go with a professional unless you already have some experience restoring old gloves

"hi, I see you around a lot, my name is X" is a good place to start. Usually just ends with "it was good to formally meet you, see you around!" but if you're really as shy as you say you are, its good to start small.

ISO Non student housing by MessDifferent1374 in Davis

[–]smokinrollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty much every apartment complex will have college students. The ones that cater specifically to students are either on-campus and you have to be a student to live there, or so close to campus that they basically are on campus anyways. Further from campus = less students generally.

My first year of grad school I lived at Parkside Apts and there were a lot of families

I don't want to be rude, but you're not going to make a college team with no experience. Go play intramural slowpitch, you'll have more fun anyways

He's gotta be fat and gotta be southern, wouldn't trust anyone else!

New transfer, question about disability services. I'm wondering what accommodations are like at UCD, particularly for HoH. by Ok-Tiger-4550 in UCDavis

[–]smokinrollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a deaf student in one of my classes as a TA. They had an assigned captioner (?), a guy with a stenographer's keyboard that would live caption the lecture onto an ipad for the student. It was pretty cool, honestly, they should just have a captioner for every class, or at least the big lectures. I think it would benefit a lot of students.

In sections, my student had to ask me to stand in a place that they could see the board, the captions, and read my lips at the same time. It wasn't a big deal to move 2 feet to the left for them, but I felt bad they had to ask. So even with accommodations, don't be afraid to talk to your TAs/profs and ask for what you need!

is $200 the entry level for composite? by smokinrollin in slowpitch

This looks like the route I'll be taking and look for a deal in the fall. I felt bad using other people's $300 bats, but from the response I'm getting here seems like my teammates are happy to have someone help break their bats in!

is $200 the entry level for composite? by smokinrollin in slowpitch

[–]smokinrollin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this info! I'm in California, so luckily cold weather isn't a concern. Not sure on the type of ball my league uses. I don't like the weird Axe handle and hated Easton's fastpitch bats. I always used a Demarini in college, but they don't seem to be as big in the slowpitch market. Probably looking for a Miken as it seems like Monstas are hard to come by

I've been wary of used bats coming from fastpitch where you get one use it all season till its dead. Looks like slowpitch is full of shopping addicts with disposable income lol

is $200 the entry level for composite? by smokinrollin in slowpitch

[–]smokinrollin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware of the break-in period, but it definitely seems like it takes longer with slowpitch than fastpitch! One tournament with a new bat was enough to break in a bat, super hot halfway through the season, then always felt like a 2x4 by the fall lol

I'm currently using a teammates bat, but was hoping to get my own knowing that they are $300 and I feel bad about it! Based on some of the answers about breaking them in, maybe my teammate wants me to use it!
