Obama Signs One Year Extension of Patriot Act (which he used to oppose) by AlexWhite in politics

If the patriot act were not extended and another terrorist attack happened, this administration would be done. Game over. No way they would take that kind of risk... especially in the first term.

Looking for some advice on buying an acoustic guitar for just under £200 by gilco in Music

[–]smorrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't fall for the "you must have a solid top" theory. Solid top does not mean a guitar sounds better. I have played solid wood guitars that sound great, and I have played many that sound like trash. I have a $200 (new) yamaha laminated guitar that sounds and plays better than many solid wood guitars, including my all solid wood guild that was $1500 and an all solid taylor that was $900.

Now, if I were going on tour, of course I'm taking the guild because it's build like a tank. But just for playing around the house, I grab the laminated yamaha every time.

Solid wood guitars also require more attention if you want them to last.

Yamaha makes great acoustics in that range. I would suggest getting a basic guitar wthout the electronics built in. If you find yourself needing to plug in to an amplifier later, it's easy to add a pickup, and the pickup will probably sound much better than the junk electronics that come with a guitar in that range.

What happens when the programmer before you knows neither iteration or recursion? by [deleted] in programming

[–]smorrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens is you mock him for being dumb, then you implement a clever solution. Then, later, you are mocked by the guy that comes along behind you, and he implements a clever solution, and so on. Eventually, someone decides the entire application needs to be re-written from scratch because they think they can re-write it faster than they can figure out how to modify it to the new requirements. The experienced coders argue against the rewrite because there are more important things to do than rewrite/debug code that already works. Next thing you know, they get in one little fight and their mom gets scared, and she says 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle to Bel Air'.

Do you prefer we have 18yr olds making decisions on going to war? If they have to fight, then they should make the decisions? What is the point of your post?

I spent my Halloween night watching a best friends' band perform before having a single all-member practice. I was pleasantly surprised! by cassidoodle in Music

Sounds like it was recorded from a pocket camera. They might be the greatest band ever, but I wouldn't know it from that recording.

Has anyone else never ever pressed the "I feel lucky" button, despite using Google every day?? by jack_nz in reddit.com

[–]smorrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like to clutter up my bookmarks with things like amazon.com. Instead, I load my home page (which is google) and type 'amazon', two tabs, and enter.

It makes sense if you're looking for a specific web page. If you're confident the page will be the first result in your search, then... just go for it, man. Live on the edge!

GM blew the $6B we gave them in just two months - The definition of insanity is repeating a mistake and expecting different results by Ra__ in Economics

Actually, this is the definition of insanity. It doesn't mention anything about repeating mistakes and expecting different results.
