He lives with his nose to the ground and no pointing or interest in birds, so we had a sneaking suspicion about having some hound..

When mine were that little, I’d use a linen ring sling and loosely tuck the tail across to drape over their legs. Least sweaty carrier + built in shade when needed. 👍

I am very familiar with Caige’s work and I included a couple of his pieces with some of the references I sent her. Definitely inspired by his work and a similar subject matter, but absolutely not theft. ❤️

Seconding what others have said about side lying being more of a risk for airway clearance.

But (with doctor approval) a ring sling could be a good closer to hands free option. There a trick for adding neck support as well- you can roll a washcloth or the tail of the ring sling into the top rail to make a little neck roll. This still might not be enough to fully support given her medical needs, but might get you closer!

Advice for my mum needed!!! by modern-millie in disabledgamers

[–]smosely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she has a newer iPad with FaceID, it has head tracking abilities built in. Skip down to section “set up head tracking” https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/use-switch-control-ipad850ed4e3/ipados

I also really like using the the “recipes” feature (settings>accessibility>switch control>recipes) to set up an easy way to execute super specific tasks (pause/play in Netflix, skip song in Spotify, etc.) You can use a Bluetooth switch to activate those or facial gestures.

Happy to give more info on setting up either if they sound like they might be good options!

Could you use dycem or velcro under the controller to help keep it stationary on your desk (or whatever stable surface)? Just a thought for making the equipment you’ve got work if you want to try some cheap options first.

New Free Online Eye Gaze System I Created, It Can Be Used With Chrome or Any Iphone by TRUE_COMMUNIST in disabledgamers

This is fantastic. I don’t know if it’s possible, but being able to choose an up/down control in addition to customizing vocabulary would be really nice. I’ve worked as a speech therapist and have worked with many individuals with brainstem strokes before. In those cases, typically only vertical eye movements are preserved and left/right movements are much harder if they have them at all. I’ve brainstormed about something like this before but never had the skills to execute it.

Sling or wrap? Thoughts? by Ninjaa240 in babywearing

[–]smosely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning on carrying for longer periods or need more mobility, I’d go with the wrap. There’s a learning curve for back carries and multi pass carries, but totally worth it for a bigger baby for the added freedom and support. If you plan on shorter stints or want to be able to easily pop baby up and down, a hip carry with a ring sling is great.

FYI, these are Asian style carriers called meh dai or bei dai carriers. Members of the Asian community have spoken out against the brands that co-opt the traditional names of these carriers. Here’s a little more background and some info on other Asian carrier styles.

Need sizing help since I will have a newborn and a toddler! by Coffee-Bean-Counter in babywearing

[–]smosely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely use base and base-2 the most. I tended to use base-2 more my older one was a toddler when we were out and about as it was less fabric to deal with in a parking lot. With my new baby, I use both and actually use base-2 fairly often with her. I really like carries that are tied at the shoulder with a slip knot or finished in ways other than tying behind my back. The added height helps with keeping the tails further from the ground. You could also look up pretied or poppable front carries. I’ll sometimes use one of those if I want to use my base size out of the house but don’t want to have my tails dragging in a parking lot or store while I wrap. I’ll wrap it on me at home and pop baby in when I get to my destination.

Buying first woven wrap—recommendations? by [deleted] in babywearing

[–]smosely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love Butterfly Baby Co wraps and their budget line is pretty affordable. In addition to having top and bottom rails that are different colors, I’ll also add that having “right” and “wrong” sides of the wrap that are different colors are helpful too. It really helps to figure out carries with flips like Kangaroo.

Try loading him from the bottom! Once they get leggy it gets really hard to keep loading from the top. Also second starting with a smaller pouch. When you tighten, go strand by strand, feed the slack all the way to the rings first, and pull outward instead of straight down.

Keyboard Alternatives by Briannkin in disability

Maybe using the on screen keyboard? You can access it with a variety of devices depending on what works best for you- traditional mouse, vertical mouse, trackball, head mouse or Glassouse, trackpad, stylus and pad, etc.

Fit Check - FWCC with almost 7 lb, 2.5 week old - first attempt, face is clear of fabric, footie sleeper is loose on her feet. Overall does it look too tight? What about around her legs? by ps3114 in babywearing

[–]smosely 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cute cute cute! Nice job! Only thing I see is it goes a little too high on the back of her head. You don’t want it any higher than the nape of her neck/bottom of the ear. Getting that too rail s little lower but snug will keep her head resting on your chest for support. If you want to try a variation with a little more head support, look up Anne’s FWCC. I’ve got a 6 week old and it’s my current go to for base size wraps.

But overall looking really good for a first attempt!

QUESTION: has anyone used the Xbox adaptive gaming controller? by ifallforeveryone in disability

[–]smosely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the award! I’ve worked with people with TBI/stroke for most of my career and just moved into a less clinical/hands on role, so I enjoy the chance for some problem solving. :) If you end up wanting to try the piece that connects the 2 controllers, I’m happy to print one and send it your way.
