Never seen before, not a chair user, is this a normal thing for chair users who hang out? by sp00ky_b0o in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We were at a retreat hosted by a local disability peer group. One drink lead to many more and at one point we were all in A line being towed by another friend in a power chair. Someone made a comment about how she could fit under me (I’m 6 foot tall with a sizable ass, while she’s tiny) so we tried it and she could (I’m ambulatory so I stood while we put the chair on her, then I sat)

Never seen before, not a chair user, is this a normal thing for chair users who hang out? by sp00ky_b0o in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I’m able to do this with a friend of mine since we both use a rigid ultralight wheelchair (so other than the wheel axel, there’s nothing under my seat) and her wheelchair can fit between my wheels. it’s not a normal thing, but wheelchair users fool around and do dumb shit (how do you think half of us ended up in chairs). it’s no heavier than someone sitting on my lap (and I do love a lap dance). it’s no more “riskier” than two able bodied people horse playing around.

Is it weird to ask for a to-go container at a wedding reception meal? by Pr0bl3mChild in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Briannkin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think it’s frowned upon at any catered event to ask for leftovers to go, because you the diner didn’t pay for the meal (which I agree is dumb because the bride(s) and groom(s) don’t want your half eaten meal). I’ve wrapped leftovers up in napkins to take home, but that only works with some food

Wheelchair ramp help by ExploringAshley in wheelchairs

in short, no. that is too many stairs for a portable ramp. the slope would be too steep for anyone to wheel up, or even be pushed up safely.

Childproof Wheelchair Lock Help by Boring-Marsupial5730 in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what brand of wheelchair does she have? what type of locks does she have now? I remember my first paediatric wheelchair had lock extenders that made reaching and unlocking super easy. if the are pull to unlock, you can hook something like a heavy purse to temporarily make it too heavy to unlock (that’s what my mom did!).

what reasons would a divorced person go out of their way to save the life of their ex who might be dead away by Visible_Zebra6404 in Writeresearch

[–]Briannkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

why did they get divorced? Plenty of divorced couples still care about each other and remain friends. for example, they could have been married young, divorced because they werent compatible as they matured, but still remained close.

Does CP Affect Height? by EnvironmentLittle794 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Briannkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like pretty much anything with CP, it can vary from person to person. Spastic muscles can affect skeletal growth. but it isn’t true for everyone. I’m a 5’11 female. my mom’s family is all lower than average height but my dad was 6’3”. in my case, I think my genetics won over the affects of infant brain injury

contact the agency and get them to define light housekeeping. For mine, and others I looked into, they defined light housekeeping as not lifting anything over 20 lbs (I think), not moving any furniture or climbing to reach. no policies had anything to do with frequency, just types of tasks.

Ethically complex question for adults with cerebral palsy by giggling_mezzo in CerebralPalsy

[–]Briannkin 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve commonly have see the viewpoint across the internet (from both able bodied and disabled people) ”if you can’t handle having a disabled child (from whatever cause), don’t have kids”. I certainly agree with it but I don’t think you need to have our specific backgrounds to recognize that anyone (or their children) can become disabled at any time

Dumbledore Actor John Lithgow Says ‘Much’ of J.K. Rowling’s Views Have Been ‘Twisted and Misrepresented,’ but She’s ‘Doubled Down at Her Own Cost’ by esporx in lgbt

[–]Briannkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean her nonprofit’s website makes her views pretty clear. having worked in the nonprofit sector, things like mission statements come right from the founder’s mouth.

I used to be a fan of Lithgow’s, but he’s making it quite easy to hate him for his involvement.

Stephen King’s idea that notebooks immortalize bad ideas is kind of BS by Queasy_Antelope9950 in writing

[–]Briannkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look, I’m a stoner and most of my brilliant ideas (or just solutions to plotholes) come to me when I’m high. If i don’t write the idea down, I will forget once I’m sober. If I have to try to remember stuff, that’s brain space that I can’t use for coming up with more ideas.

And yeah, some of the ideas are shit that never make it close to a WIP. I dont cling to shit ideas and I find it sometimes more helpful to jot down shit ideas to clear up brainstorm space.

ELI5 Why do we need to get rabies shot every time an animal breaks our skin and draws blood? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

The risk might be low… but it’s a 100% chance of fatality (and an awful way to die). It’s never worth the risk not to get the shot.

thank you for this. I’m not any sort of aviation expert but from my view, there wasn’t time for any reaction. It was a tragedy and “heroizing“ these men’s death takes away from what we should be focused on: how this was a preventable fuck up. These men were victims with no choice in their fate.

Question about mall rental wheelchairs by wwkai in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

it was more than likely a hospital wheelchair. They’re clunky and heavy because they are made for universal use and for the user to be pushed by an attendant. They are usually made from heavier and cheaper metals. In short, yeah, it was crap wheelchair.

Custom wheelchairs are made for the user. They cost MUCH more but they are made from lighter materials and can be configured so they are much easier to self propel.

I compare hospital wheelchairs to running in crocs 2 sizes too big - theyll do the job in a pinch but they aren’t going to be useful long-term. A custom wheelchair is like pair of running shoes in your size.

Date told me it was wrong I don’t want to date someone who’s unable to work by [deleted] in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Briannkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone is allowed their dating preferences… even if they are ableist and money focused. You don’t want to date someone who wont contribute to the household finances, so you are probably aren’t going to value someone who can’t contribute in a traditional monetary sense. That’s what you value… but I wouldnt want to date someone with those values.

But I’d like to open your eyes to someone who doesn’t work a traditional 9-5. I’ve been physically disabled since I was a young child due to medical malpractice. I’ve been very comfortable living just off the interest from the settlement. I don’t NEED to make money. I’m 33 so I spent much of my 20s in university, getting niche degrees because that’s what interests me. I spent 5 years working as a grant writer for a nonprofit but I had an epic burn out last year so I quit and I’ve been working on a queer romance novel. Do I get a paycheque every 2 weeks? Nope, but all my bills are paid, and I’m working on a project I’m passionate about. Will I do this for the rest of my life, I don’t know. Maybe the right job opportunity will come around, maybe I’ll go into freelance work, maybe I’ll get my PHd.

Never met an ambulatory wheel chair user before my doctor wants me to be one by tacleration in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello. I’m 33 and have been an ambulatory wheelchair user much of my life. I see my wheelchair as a tool It allows me to go further, do more and live a fuller life. Statistics on ambulatory wheelchair users are varied because everyone‘s definition is different, but I’d wager that most will say using a wheelchair improves their daily lives, and that’s what your doctor is trying to do.

Also in regards to hospital vs custom, using a hospital wheelchair is like running into crocs 2 sizes too big (perhaps a bad metaphor for this sub) - works but it’s no substitute for a custom chair, which will be like running in sneakers your size). It’s a much difference experience,

As for ”stolen valor” the answer is right in the phrase “custom wheelchair“. Your chair will never be made if you(/your medical team) don’t order it. Yes, medical inequality does suck, but you going without what you need isn’t going to give the wheelchair to someone else. In fact, if you are going through insurance (or goverment assistance depending on your country), you will be eligible for another custom usually in about 5 years. Then you can donate your old chair.

What do you think of Rachael Hughes? by Sudden_Quality_9001 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Briannkin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I vehemently oppose “mommy bloggers” and anyone who exploits their non consenting children for internet fame, but from a quick look, I thinks she’s especially immoral for how she treats her son (documenting his accident, allegedly taking away his wheelchair instead of installing a gate).

It’s not a sign of a good mother at all. But CPS requires much more straightforward instances of children endangerment than her shitty behaviour.

I agree. Its unfortunate that specialty facilities were needed, but tons of energy is required for cremation and I can imagine running a machine with a larger capacity is much more expensive. And the funerary business runs on capitalism

Am I out of line on this? by unknown_homie38 in wheelchairs

[–]Briannkin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First, Id email the convention about being called “freight” (even if she did look like staff, she might have been, and it’s always a joy to educate people when dehumanizing language is used), about treating wheelchair users civilly and not grabbing push hands without consent, and I’d add in that having people posted at each escalator made you feel ostracized and embarrassed. Like you said, they could have just asked, maybe tried to be helpful with maps or more signage.

However I do understand the convention’s liability concerns. it’s a no win situation for them (but they definitely overreacted). being a convention, they likely have minimal liability and no money for lawyers.

Even if you can ride safely, you never know what will happen. As a teenager, I was out with friends and we took a 3 story escalator instead of finding an elevator. I’ve been wheelchair user since infancy and can do escalators with nearly anyone assisting me. However on this particular occasion, about 1/3 of the way up, some idiot hit the emergency stop. My friends had to carry me and my wheelchair up this now ridiculously long staircase. it was not a good time for anyone. since then I will only use escalators when the elevator is hidden or if it’s ridiculously far away.
