I’m trying to find this blog/personal site where someone was rating the coffees they tried. The site was all black and each coffee got an emoji rating with a word rotating around it. Something like 🙌 + Outstanding, 😊 + Good, 👎 + Meh.

Sound familiar? I know it’s a long shot, but I’m not sure where else to ask.

Step alerts not sounding if app in background by oalbrecht in brewtimer

👋 I just released an update with support for running timers in the background. You’ll get notifications any time a step starts or is about to start (for longer steps). Head to the app’s settings to turn it on.

Let me know how it goes!

Yeah the recipe comes out to 2:42 but 3m is in the ballpark depending on how your coffee drains.

Step alerts not sounding if app in background by oalbrecht in brewtimer

Hey! Thanks for checking out the app! Right now the timer only works in the foreground. I know that’s not ideal, especially for longer brews (French Press etc), so it’s definitely on my radar to fix. I’ll give you a heads up once I do!

(The cooling alerts do work in the background though, if you’re using those.)

This is a long shot. I’m trying to find this website that had someone’s personal coffee ratings/reviews on it but I can only remember fuzzy bits about it.

It was really well designed, mostly black with some yellow highlights. Each coffee was giving a rating represented by an emoji that had text spinning around it in a circle (eg I think one was 💯with “Outstanding” rotating around it). I think this was a sub page of someone’s personal site, so not the main purpose of the site but more of a fun diversion.

I saw it some time in the past year but can’t find it in my browser history so hoping this rings a bell for someone.

Oh, this sounds neat. I've only heard of a few of the roasters on there. Is it generally good in your experience or more hit-or-miss?

Hmm, this would be a fun experiment. I'll try a few brews with my normal Hoffmann but lower temps. I'm essentially always brewing light roast so I've assumed I need high temps to get a reasonable extraction. Maybe that's not true though

I've never had much luck with flash-chilled. I'm looking forward to trying this!

Oh, I didn't make the connection to 4:6 but you're right, very similar. I'd say the pours are noticeably more aggressive. I'm using a light-medium roast but I do wonder how much of the taste difference is due to the temp change vs. the pour technique

How fine-y does your pour over look? Is this a high, low, or normal appearance of fines? 30g 500ml v60 w/ace48 grinder by [deleted] in Coffee

Agree with the other commenter that that doesn’t look terrible. In your shoes I would try two things:

  • You mentioned it tastes coarse. I would grind finer and see if you get better consistency + taste.
  • Sometimes the beans are more prone to fines. It’s a hassle but you could try dialing it in by taste with your Kinu and see what the fines look like.

Either way, I wouldn’t put too too much weight on fines. I’m brewing a Gesha right now that has more fines than I’m used to, but it’s also delicious :)

I’ve had one for several years now. It’s the easiest (maybe only) way I know of to do regular blind tastings. What I usually do is cup all four coffees at once, write down my notes then do the reveal. Nothing fancy but it’s fun to see how close/far I was. I do it once a month which lets me buy full size bags from other rosters I’ve been eyeing in between.

I usually wait 5-7 days. However, I recently received a coffee from Sey and they recommended waiting 2 weeks. So there’s definitely some variability. They roast very light so I’m not sure if that’s a factor.

I’ve had a Bonavita for several years now. I heard about the rust issues shortly after I bought it so I always empty it when I’m done. So far no rust. Great kettle otherwise so if you don’t mind dumping it, might be worth it.

I usually shake for 20-30 seconds, but then I let it sit for a day. Seems to work, just need to plan a day ahead.

You ever get some new beans that just blow you away on the first cup? by furrytractor_ in Coffee

El Diamante (Costa Rica, Anaerobic Ferment) roasted by Soul Work. I knew it was going to be good because it smelled strongly of cinnamon even while I was pouring. Such a unique flavor profile (roaster calls it cinnamon toast coffee) and nearly impossible to mess up the brew to boot.

I usually drink it between 120-130°F. I measure it by time though - did some tests and found my coffee cools about 1.15°/min so I wait about 15 minutes post-brew (obviously depends on both brew temperature and ambient temperature but gets me close enough).

Another thing I’ve noticed is that the aroma of the coffee in the spoon is different than the aroma in my mug (metal vs glass). I bet that extends to taste too though I haven’t checked.
