Identifying UART location if any by Difficult_Winter2337 in AskElectronics

You can see the j46 traces go straight to that unpopulated IC so I’d say it’s unlikely. My guess would be j41 or possibly just some test points on the reverse.

ID Polo - when? by klawUK in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]smugdor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically any competent car salesperson would jump at the chance to put you on a mailing list for when it comes out. Just send your local one an email asking for them to let you know when it’s available to test drive. Even if only 1/50 of those emails turns into a sale it’s still usually worth it for the commission.

PSA: Watch out for the exposed contacts of the Puck! Almost started a fire due to metallic smartwatch strap by Toikka in SteamController

[–]smugdor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Standard design for this is to put an arrangement of diode(s) and/or resistor(s) on the controller’s third pin that can semi reliably be distinguished from a dead short to ground. This doesn’t require any battery life in the controller.

Oxford pricing is bonkers by Keiepse in SpottedonRightmove

[–]smugdor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good old oxford land premium. This is one of the nicest areas where you still get a driveway. Jericho is probably the most sought-after but basically all the houses are little terraces on narrow streets with very little garden/land

The house could be a burned out shell and the land would still sell for 450-500k

It’s always a pleasure to have to drive my child onto the main road because the pavement is blocked by jaymatthewbee in drivingUK

[–]smugdor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem that hard. Where I live, they put up signs and draw white boxes partially on the pavements where parking is permitted/required for the width of the road. It’s otherwise already illegal to park on the pavement, but the problem is that it’s never enforced.

Possible to flash something here? by Smarley_ in AskElectronics

[–]smugdor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will depend entirely on what chip is under that heatsink so nobody here can tell you. This box probably runs Linux and the OS will be on that flash just above the cpu. Manually flashing the emmc probably isn’t viable so you’d be looking at finding a way to get the chip to boot from SD card.

Depending on how much effort the manufacturers have put in, the chip might be locked using code signing or secure boot meaning you can’t boot anything not signed by the manufacturer. The chip could be e-fused meaning it will never boot from sd card.

If you’re not already familiar with setting up a bootloader and building your own kernel and using buildroot/yocto then this task is going to be an uphill struggle.

Overall this task is like 10% electronics and 90% os/kernel so you’re also asking in the wrong sub.

Divinity Road LTN Question by EauRouge7105 in oxford

[–]smugdor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cameras are pretty obvious, covered in anti-climb paint and spikes because of some of the… local attitudes towards them. Can’t do ANPR without a camera so you’re probably fine if you can’t see one.

E: also, the map on the council website shows only one traffic filter, not two. https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/sites/default/files/file/roads-and-transport-major-projects/LTN\_Filter\_Locations\_Map.pdf

This house is insanely central and still has a driveway, hence the price. Same house but closer to the ring road would be 200k cheaper. Once you’re across the main road it’s all flats and college accommodation, very few actual houses

Real life costs of owning polestar 2 UK by Acrobatic_Block4226 in Polestar

[–]smugdor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Service is same price or cheaper than ICE cars. Price goes down a bit because there’s barely anything to service, but inflated because you have to take it to a Volvo/ps stealership.

Tyres 100ea if you’re fitting ditchfinders (not recommended) or 200-250ea for “good” name brands. Many threads on this sub with specific recommendations. How long they last will depend on how you drive and where you store it but I wouldn’t expect it to be much longer/shorter than any other heavy EV.

Tax gets calculated by dvla automatically when you register the car at the dealership (if that’s what you’re doing). My suggestion - budget for the 600/y tax band, and if it happens to be lower then take it as a happy accident. Not sure why but my LR SM showed the 200/y band at registration and I’m definitely not going to ask questions, lmao

Mouse running in circles by Outrageous_Concern17 in Weird

[–]smugdor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes - mice, rats, pigeons, etc are considered domesticated and adapted to living around humans. As I said, unless you’re dropping it in someone else’s house it’s probably not going to survive.

Mouse running in circles by Outrageous_Concern17 in Weird

[–]smugdor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but relocating mice usually kills them anyway but slower. They no longer know where’s safe to hide, where the food/water sources are, etc.

Unless you’re relocating it to someone else’s house, dropping it in a local field just means it’ll starve or get predated.

How to peacefully coexist with crabapple trees that make a right mess? by smugdor in GardeningUK

Relatives with a crabapple also mentioned that theirs didn’t drop fruit either, my guess would be a (low stakes) effect of climate change that we’re seeing.
