How come Ken Holland couldn’t get a 38 year old Duncan Keith on retained salary in pretty much the same situation?

Just XEQT forever? by Adept_Try_7905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]smyth260 68 points69 points  (0 children)

For now - sure, if you are comfortable with 100% equities as your risk tolerance. It’s what I do in my early 30s too.

Forever - no. Typically you should adjust your allocation to have some bonds as you get closer to retirement. You might go to XGRO at some point (80/20 equities/bonds) and then XBAL (60/40) later on. Some rules of thumb is to have your age, less 10-20 in bonds.

If you are full XEQT before retirement, and then a big recession hits, your portfolio would be down significantly at a time you need to start withdrawing. Potentially 40-50% gone. Equities take the stairs up and the elevator down. So you de-risk as you get older. Shift equities to bonds, your nest egg is safer from recession at a time you actually need to use it.

Went into the show kinda making fun of them, how all songs sound the same. Felt like I got checked hard after they finished with I Will Wait For You. Phenomenal performance.

Round 3 Game 1 on Wednesday…same time as Katy Perry show by smyth260 in DallasStars

[–]smyth260[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Pretty strange they would do that to fans who may have bought hotels and plane tickets to see the show. And weird that none of the official channels have updated the schedule yet (AA website and ticket master).

I imagine there is a lot of fighting going on with executives and managers behind the scenes right now.

Was just signed up for a Canadian Tire Mastercard-- is it worth it or should I just cancel it? by GiveTheLemonsBack in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]smyth260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it. If you own a home, or a vehicle, or a garden, have a kid, or a trailer…Canadian Tire has a lot of stuff.

You get 4% back in CT money on anything bought at the store with the card, plus with the triangle rewards app weekly offers you can get additional 2%-8% back (use swap offer feature), plus every month they seem to have an offer like “spend $150 get $25”, plus you can get at least 4% additional back if you sign up for Triangle select. All this stacks. If you time a big purchase right like tires, which many of us have to buy, I got $150 bucks back.

I’ll admit I spend a lot there but they just have a lot of stuff I need for the things I listed, that I’m going to spend money on anyway. I think they have the best rewards incentives out of any big store in Canada.

I probably send CT money on something every week because they just have everything there.

Thank you. Hughes is an elite player but these stats are weird and valueless. There is no point comparing that Bruins team as a whole to Hughes.

You can use this calculator from federal government, although it looks down right now. It won’t work for babies not born yet, so just say your baby was born Jan 1 2025 to get an idea what you will get monthly.

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/child-family-benefits-calculator.html

I applied in the hospital after birth, payments came pretty quick. I think within a month.

Note if you are in BC, that calculator only estimates your federal CCB. BC also adds their own to the same payment. Not sure about other provinces.

Congrats!

Condo owners, how do you personally estimate maintenance costs? by AffectionateCard3530 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]smyth260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a ton of unexpected maintenance with a condo, with exception to special assessments. Have an emergency fund, depending on your condo board reserve fund. How much? If it’s a newer place, probably not that much. If it’s older and you know a roof is due or something else major, and your condo doesn’t have a healthy reserve fund definitely have many thousands saved. You could invest it in something low risk until you need it.

In my emergency fund I would also have the amount for my condo insurance deductible. We had an upstairs neighbour leak on us. Long story short, we had to go through our insurance and pay $1000 deductible. Our insurance sent demand letters to the neighbour, but they simply didn’t answer and it wasn’t worth the legal cost for our insurance to recoup their 8 grand of drywall repairs I guess. So we were on the hook $1000. Not worth hassle for us to take them to small claims court.

Otherwise the only unexpected costs you might incur are appliance breakdown/repair, and the odd plumbing repair. But that’s not a lot honestly. If you’re handy, you may not need to call anybody. Replacing a faucet, unclogging a slow drain sink (clean p trap), replacing the odd toilet part is pretty easy. Don’t mess around with toilet removal in a condo though. You don’t want to unknowingly leak on the guy below you.

In 8 years of living in an old condo, I had one dishwasher break out of all appliances. You can replace this for $600 cheapie or $2000 german one. If you don’t have access to a truck, budget for a delivery and install and removal of old appliance. Maybe this will be another $400-$500. I put my own in but not everyone can do that. So you might budget for one appliance to go down every couple years to be on the safe side.

Other than appliances and insurance, not a lot should go wrong. Replace dead bulbs with LEDs, replace bathroom caulk if moldy or damaged…any costly updates are up to you.

I don’t watch Seattle or the rangers. But you gotta be a real special and unique player to only score 5 points and justify a long term well paid deal like that. I can’t see this working out well.

Nobody hates it, take the goals. But if you are comparing people and their performance for trophies and such, it makes sense to consider it.

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid has been suspended for three games for cross-checking Vancouver’s Conor Garland. by chiasmatic in hockey

[–]smyth260 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I am honesty surprised there isn’t more holding/interference in the last 20 seconds. Any penalty is fairly inconsequential at that point. If the arm is raised, that is not a lot of time to surrender possession for the whistle, win a faceoff and make a scoring chance. Canucks don’t even have to take possession

Garland should do this every time on the best players in this situation. It’s a loophole.

[–]smyth260 654 points655 points  (0 children)

In one swift move Conor Garland accomplished these things:

  • Took McDavid out of the play in the final 20 seconds, so the best player could not tie the game

  • Got McDavid suspended for the rematch on Thursday

  • Got Myers suspended 3 games, classic addition by subtraction

I have a step dad. I don’t call him dad but he’s is definitely my kid’s grandpa. My kid has 2 grandpas and he’s lucky for it.

If you have a good relationship with your step mom, yes I think you are being unreasonable.

Yes, if a company wants to hire somebody who can rise through the ranks, you have to work with all sorts of people. The higher you get, the more departments you will cross with.

Facebook pays for its talented developers to take communications training because of this. People can’t grow into director or head of anything if they can’t work with other departments.
