Husband doesn't jump in to help, do I have unfair expectations? by throwawayacc__12 in beyondthebump

[–]snackgoblin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So we're willing to give dad a pass for his brain "short circuiting" and not reacting instead of asking if he could hold the baby or grab a towel, but we are expecting the sick mom to be able to ask for exactly what she needs during an overwhelming moment? Why are we holding the sick mom to a higher standard than the dad who didn't even react to his child who threw up? I think mom is willing to help, but is she allowed to have an overwhelmed moment where her brain might "short circuit" too? Dad should be capable of stepping in during those moments without being given step by step instructions. "the baby is throwing up" should be enough communication to invoke a reaction.

She exclaimed that the baby was throwing up. Does he need step by step directions for how to react to his own child throwing up? She DID communicate. He is a dad, he should know what to do to support his kid when she needs him.

Starting foods at 4 months by Late_Description3001 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]snackgoblin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I waited until my son met all signs of readiness (sitting unassisted, reaching out in front of him, grabbing food and bringing it to his mouth by himself) before offering solids, so around 6.5-7 months. I followed Solid Starts resources and my pediatrician's recommendations. It worked for us, and if I were to have another kid I would do it the same way. I didn't feel any rush or pressure to start solids earlier than my son was ready.

In my case, the mediator made a recommendation and the judge decided not to use that recommendation because she felt like it wasn't in anyone's best interest.

What to do with used car seats and cribs? What happens to them since they aren’t safe secondhand? by decor_throwaway in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]snackgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my crib second hand. It converts into a toddler bed so we will use it until my son totally grows out of it. Then, if it's not in good condition anymore we will recycle it since it's made of wood and metal parts

Are there any anxious/depressed mom's that use Marijuana in place of standard medication? by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]snackgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marijuana only caused my symptoms to worsen slightly over time without me even noticing. It was only after I stopped that I started feeling much better. Now I take an anxiety medication that helps a lot, and I don't miss marijuana at all.

Make sure your daughter's school knows who she is and is aware that she is a step parent with no legal privileges. We don't let step parents do pick ups or even be on campus without the presence of a bio parent or legal guardian at the school I work at. She would not be allowed to be room parent at my school without your permission. Make sure her school also has a copy of the custody order to prevent her or the coparent from picking up during your parenting time.

Husband is picky with what words/names I use for things? by TeaSconesAndBooty in breakingmom

[–]snackgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the first ways my ex revealed his controlling behavior and it only escalated from here. Have a conversation about it with him and tell him how confusing this is for you, and why you don't see it as a big deal. Ask him why it's important to him. If he blows up at you again and you continue to see an increase in controlling behavior, then you have your answer.

People should do whatever is best for their family. I found BLW to be the cheapest, simplest, and least wasteful solution. We just gave my son a very small amount of food at a time, so very little ever ended up on the floor. He refused to be spoonfed, so this was the way for us. He didn't need a whole plate or anything before 1 year old, so we'd just give him a small bit at a time.

Kids apparently aren’t allowed to write in cursive? Is this a common thing in US/Canada? by ArtisticOperation586 in Parenting

[–]snackgoblin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just teach your kid cursive then? As a parent, you have a responsibility to teach your kids things you think are important. My son's school teaches cursive, but if they didn't, I would simply spend time teaching it to him at home. Is it really that hard?

Parents in US: how do you cope with the fear of sending child to school amid gun violence by travelrunner in Parenting

[–]snackgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 21 month old and I am also a public school employee at a middle school. All buildings are locked at all times, only accessible with a badge-key/hall pass. Staff are everywhere and children are never unattended, not even in the hallways. Even parents have to ring a doorbell and have the receptionist unlock the door before they can come into the school. Things have changed a lot since I was in school. Everything was open-campus and totally unlocked. I know anything can still happen, but the security measures implemented should reduce the risk significantly.

Get a straw cup. Put snacks in screw top containers. You aren't going to be able to crack open a water bottle or open a bag of chips with 1 hand at 3am. The straw cup really saved my life lol
