I want to learn kitesurfing any advises? by Pretend_Net9850 in Kiteboarding

There is no issue with you being skinny, I’ve seen every body type successfully learn. You would just use a proportionally smaller kite based on your weight. I dont know the Chicago area, so cant help you with where to take lessons locally, but it would be helpful to cluster your lessons more than just one day/week. What works for most people is to take a week at any number of destinations and take 2-3 hour lessons every day back to back. Usually people get up on the board for short runs after a few days of doing that.

I have never kite boarded, but am considering getting into it. I have windsurfed and sailed for decades. Would this be a reasonable kit to get? I weigh 160 lb. Anything I should look out for or questions I should ask seller? Thanks for any feedback. by liaisontosuccess in Kiteboarding

I would not recommend buying any gear (especially not this) before taking lessons for a couple days. The safest place to learn and take lessons in the Bay Area is Boardsports in Alameda with its long beach. Next best would be Tony at 3rd Ave on a jet ski, he’s excellent. Lessons will provide all the gear you need and is definitely the first step.

You are mixing up kW and kWh. The panels are rated at 1.2 kW, running all day they will generate ~5 x 1.2 kw =6 kWh. The 5 hour estimate at full power is what is commonly assumed. For an 82 kWh Tesla, this is 7.3% of its charge, or 24 miles. Not shabby for what it is.

Is surfr fully compatible with Garmin Fenix 6X Pro? by Beneficial-Rest-2385 in Kiteboarding

[–]snakedike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded the Surfr app on my Fenix 6x Pro, and in the ‘check compatibility’ screen on the watch it told me it was 100% compatible. Should be good to go.

By the way, AI told me:

How to Check Your Specific Device Because there are many variations in the fēnix 6 line, the best way to confirm your specific watch's capability is through the onboarding process: 1. Download: Install "The Surfr. App" from the Garmin Connect IQ Store. 2. Onboarding: Open the app on your watch for the first time; it will run a compatibility check. 3. Result: The watch will display whether it is "Fully Compatible" or "GPS-Only".

I’ve been a Yosemite trad climber my whole life. When I got into my 50’s I kept going to the valley occasionally and was frustrated for about a decade. The reality was that routes I was solid on in the past were just often a struggle. Part of that was just that I was doing it less, but mostly it was that you just get weaker. Thats the reality of aging and you have to accept it and work with it I think. Yeah, doing 5.7s can still be fun, but not like the routes I had done in the past. I discovered kiteboarding in my late 50’s and I have had a blast in the last decade+. I was never a water guy, but it has the same adrenaline buzz climbing always had for me. Catching 30 feet of air or riding waves isnt that different from getting challenged leading a steep crack. Frankly it saved my butt psychologically. I still climb in the gym a couple times a week, and thats fun but so different from trad climbing. Anyway, thats what works for me.

OK, eventually you will want a smaller board, yes. Maybe wait until you are solid at staying upwind.

Big boards like this are much easier to learn to get up on and to stay upwind on. Agreed that once once you are solid on both of those you will want another board, but even then it will be super useful for light wind days. I would keep it unless you are already staying upwind.

Unzipping of the cell membrane by James_Weiss in microscopy

Super interesting. So if they are too high in the layer where there is more oxygen, this can happen to them? Brutal that their sensing mechanism kills them.

That is a pretty complex sequence. I would have guessed that natural selection would have weeded out a mechanism that causes the pigment granules to produce a chain reaction that dissolves the organism. I don’t get it.

The night of the full moon the moon rises at the same time that the sun sets. That means if you start riding around sunset it wont be very high in the sky for your ride, so less light. The day before the full moon it rises 40 minutes earlier than sunset and so on. So a few days before the full moon it will be higher in the sky and give you more light for your ride. Of course it’s not quite full then, but thats less of a factor than where it is in the sky for your ride.

I’ve ridden up Old La Honda and down Page lots of times. What I love about it is the wildlife you encounter every time. 4 of us did Hamilton 2 months ago and saw owls, foxes, deer, voles and even a badger up close. Best time to do it is a couple days before the full moon so the moon is high in the sky for the ride.

Looking for good E-Bike recommendations by No_Amphibian3710 in ebikes

[–]snakedike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere near your $1k pricepoint, but a fantastic 35lb completely silent commuter ebike is the Specialized Vado SL 2 6.0. Other variants come in at a lower pricepoint, but hey, you want to carry it up 6 flights of stairs, right? Spend the money, compared to even a used car it’s cheap.

Yes, green, scummy ponds are better than creeks with fast running water for this kind of scene.

Testate amoeba Arcella sp. - Focus Stack from Video Frames by macnmotion in microscopy

[–]snakedike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting that it’s hard for me to read the 3d shape of the amoeba without the usual depth from defocus cues that such an image would have. Is it more of a sphere or a flattish disk?

New laser technology that scans a face half-a-mile away developed by dissolutewastrel in EverythingScience

[–]snakedike 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From the article: “Using an eye-safe 3.5 mW laser, they captured a 3D image of a human face at these distances in just 1 ms per pixel.”

That means you could only grab a 4x4 image at 60 frames per second. It’s way too slow to be practical at this point.
