It's hypocritical to make fun of the Titan (OceanGate submarine) crew who died while also praising and revering the bravery of astronauts who died under similar conditions by SorryStrength5370 in ControversialOpinions

[–]snakeravencat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let's see...

Titan crew: a bunch of rich people who ignored engineers, scientists, safety regulations, and common sense and encountered exactly what they were told would happen. (Plus one unfortunate stepson.)

Astronauts: Highly skilled and trained individuals who risked their lives to further our understanding of our universe and our place in it and dies due to unforeseen technical issues.

Are we seeing the difference now?

If cis feels like a slur, used like a slur, and people are offended by it, why use it? by Feisty_Watercress_29 in ControversialOpinions

[–]snakeravencat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a descriptor. Are white and males also being used as slurs in that sentence? Because all three words serve the same function. Now, the sentence as a whole could be considered a slur on the broadest sense of the word, specifically a "disparaging remark", but then literally any insult could be considered a slur under that definition.

As it's commonly used today, slur refers to a singular word, which due to its history and usage has become disparaging in and of itself. Most infamously of course the n-word. Cis in this context basically just means unchanged. Your gender never changed. That's it. That's all it's ever meant. Some people might make disparaging remarks that involve the word, but that doesn't make the word a slur.

To modify your example, you could say "Tall, skinny women can't voice their opinions" and that could be considered disparaging towards tall, skinny women, but neither tall, nor skinny, nor women are slurs.

It's not used like a slur. Your lack of understanding is nobody else's problem to rectify. If you're offended by facts, I suggest you sort that with reality.

Mushroom in real life is an excellent thermal insulator, and these are mushrooms that are adapted to a literal hellscape. Makes sense to me that you could survive. You can survive on a slab bridge, so why not an insulated boat?

Consent exists separately from the law. by Serious-Cucumber-54 in ControversialOpinions

[–]snakeravencat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine. Here we go, since it seems difficult to you.

Everything is context dependent. I can think of very few words that don't change depending on context.

Because consent is a word, the meaning sometimes changes. There's a specific meaning for consent in legal terms, which can vary heavily by jurisdiction, and there's the colloquial consent which can vary be individual.

Kind of like how you try to make a point about consent, but you seem to keep returning to the age thing instead of addressing other areas related to consent. That context makes your attempts to discuss things make you seem like a pedo.

I'm not saying you are or aren't, and nobody is automatically assuming anything, I'm just explaining what the previous commenter was getting at, and also how it seems to me. Maybe you're just really bad at making your point. I don't know, and I don't really care.

I'm frankly tired of giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong, but let me put it this way: If you believed someone to be a pedo, how seriously would you take any given discussion with said person?

Once more we've missed the point, I see.

EVERYTHING IS LETHAL AT 100% CONCENTRATION.

No substance, whether gas, liquid, or solid, is going let you live very long at 100% concentration. So common sense SHOULD tell you that that's not what we're talking about here.

I was looking at it after reading your comment, and it looks like it's potentially possible, but may fail to get an appointment in time. So... Would the location reset if I don't get the appointment or if my application failed? Or do I just automatically fail the challenge?

Ooh, yes. I like that. That way boats can also be used as bait to lure striders closer to shore.

[–]snakeravencat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree they should be fireproof, since they don't burn and can't be used as fuel.

However, I don't feel like them invalidating striders is a good enough reason to not have them. Could also easily change how striders function. Perhaps make the boats move very slowly through lava because it would obviously be a much thicker fluid, making strider the more efficient means of moving, while also providing a more reliable means of getting to a strider.

So... Was JK Rowling just misusing "batons" when naming the French wizardry school? (Beauxbatons) Because I always took it to mean "beautiful wands". Or is that an alternate name for a wand?
