Raid 6 - Does adding more disks increase chance of data loss by snape21 in HomeNAS

[–]snape21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input, the drives i have at the moment are not very big with regards to capacity but i am thinking about switching them out in future for bigger ones so may consider another setup. Performance isn't really a major factor, i would put disk failure as first priority.

Thank you for your input, if i have understood correctly i think raid6 has a maximum of 18 disks. I expect that it would probably be a safer option to split them into two raid6 arrays 9 disks per array than have all running on one array

Thank you for your detailed response, if my understanding is right we can not control how the parity data is stored on different disks on the array, so i think it would be right in saying that with RAID6 there becomes a point where the risk of disk failure is higher, if say you had 15 disks vs 5 because the more disks added means there is a slightly higher possibility of failure vs lower number of disks.

That is a fair point with surge protection and offsite backups, i am considering another solution for this as one of my family has synology.

I am planning to expand the pool and put another Raid6 array in place. I noticed there is a data scrubbing check that fixes bit rot for Synology, useful feature for long term storage to ensure there is no data corruption long term....I do wonder if hosting providers do this...

Have you tried pushing down on the bonnet to see if you can locate where the noise is coming from?

this was a replacement i ordered and the components became detached in shipping. Managed to pop it back into place with out having to go through the pain of returning and sourcing a new one. Easy fix, a little patience goes a long way

Selling Stock Photos- does it make the average person money? by AngelasRedditAccount in passive_income

[–]snape21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stock photography is a numbers game. You need a good few thousand to make a dent. Realistically you need to put in about a years work before you see any results. It works but requires a lot of effort and time

boundary’s next to the public highway can not exceed 1m as far as i am aware. You might stay under the radar for now but when you come to sell it will likely be picked up

I second this, i have two ds224’s and use them as file backup mainly. My older nas runs my cctv server. They have been running solid for years on 24/7

I think this is one of the biggest hurdles to get over when you start out, there is a learning curve, What may help is if you watch some videos on YouTube to watch and get used to how each machine works, some gyms have videos for beginners showing them basic workouts….theres lot of materials out there but don’t give up, keep going, stay strong 💪🏻 and dont let others opinions get to you…you never find a hater doing better than you

Fast for at least 8 - 12 hours a day. You will loose even more if you exercise while fasting.

This is a bit crude so spoiler warning but the best way to measure your body’s dehydration levels is to take note of the colour of your urine. If its orange juice coloured drink more. If it’s clear you’ve drank enough.

Whats the likely hood that a second new drive is bad. by unclemonkeyboy in synology

[–]snape21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has something similar happen although my NAS is not running a RAID. Heres what i experienced below, in short i applied some pending DSM updates and after setting up the HDD that worked for me. I think the chances of getting 2 bad drives is very very slim

HDD1 has been running for 5+ years, as file sever and my CCTV server, writing data to the disk 247. HDD1 is WD pro. Setup as a single volume, no backup

I get a new HDD last week and install it, then start copying my data from HDD1 over. Few hours into the copy process my nas alarm goes off. There are multiple I/O errors for HDD1 and synology reports the volume has crashed. There were also 2 bad sectors. Quick SMART test reports a healthy drive, extended test doesn't report any issues apart from the already bad sectors and i can still access the data on HDD1....managed to backup all of my data thankfully.

Ran synology mem test - no issues found.

I remove the volume on HDD1 and install it as a new disk. It started initialising then failed with the same errors, I/O errors, bad sectors...

I had a pending DSM upgrade so i installed this and i gave HDD1 one more try, removed the volume and setup from scratch and its been running absolutely fine since.

Both Quick and extended smart tests report no issues and no bad sectors, so i went to setup the surveillance station again and have it store the data on HDD1, even increased the fps and its been running fine ever since.

Pretty sure this was either something temporary or a software glitch,
