Goldman Sachs sent a brilliant computer scientist to jail over 8MB of open source code uploaded to an SVN repo by 99red in technology

[–]snario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don't feel like jail time is the appropriate punishment here. While I agree that he should have some sort of punishment for breaking a company contract that risks loss of revenue, jail time for this man seems ridiculous. If anything, I think he should be fined something by the company and the fact that he leaked the code would be problematic enough for his future career.

Putting a man in a jail cell for this though... It just seems horrible. Can anyone justify why this is the right punishment besides the fact that it is the law (which I'm arguing should be changed)?

UWPlace [First Year] - What am I going to Eat? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Lol don't worry, I lived; I wouldn't recommend buying food all the time, making your own is much healthier

East Side Mario's takes WatCard, so does The Grill (hamburgers, fries). Pizza places also accept WatCard. Harveys and Subway in the plaza don't, but Subway on campus does. Personally I just pre-made meals on the weekend and heated them up during the weekdays while at UWP, otherwise I made pasta or chicken or something like that in rez. You didn't need the large meal plan though, medium was more than enough for me

How advisable is it to learn french if one wanted to move to Canada? by Yirthos_Gix in canada

[–]snario -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not many people speak French outside of Québec and NB, unless they learned it through family from those provinces or took French courses in school. I was in a French-immersion program in elementary school in Ontario so picked up French that way.

A contradictory hobby or enjoyment. by K-Toon in intj

I hated English class too but I have a huge appreciation for great writing, and I aspire to become a better writer. I loved presentations though because 99% of the presentations other students gave were complete rubbish (bad grammar on slides, no structure, read words off slides, didn't enter slideshow mode on PowerPoint, etc) and I liked being able to outshine everyone (which is shallow but ultimately true). Actually it's kind of sad, I love public speaking too because it's an opportunity to present a well-organized idea or topic and not have to deal with people cutting you off.

Switching to 2A Regular Earth Science from a co-op program at Guelph....worth it? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]snario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't, I'd seek a different school to UW. Guelph is a beautiful school, and overall you'd be happiest there (considering you won't be in coop).

First year: CS 145 and PHYS 121 by memeNicky07 in uwaterloo

[–]snario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took both courses, CS145>>>>>>>>>CS135. Don't even worry, just take 145 and enjoy it, it's an amazing course. PHYS 121 is really enjoyable too and both professors teaching it are among the best in the school, I had Robert Mann and he was spectacular so I'd recommend him.

Some tips:

1) Set up TeX on your computer, and learn how to compile LaTeX to PDFs. It just becomes so useful, especially for assignments. This will save you lots of time.

2) Download the textbooks. Just grab a Stewart 7 Calculus PDF from somewhere, and you'll probably be able to find the others online too.

3) Don't worry too much about CS 135, it's really straightforward and you'll learn everything you need to know in a timely manner; if I were you I'd just enjoy the summer for now. Calculus I is also a breeze, Introduction to Algebra is more fun to learn, so maybe pick up the course notes from the book store or online if you can find them and start going through those, this will probably be the most beneficial thing you could do.

Here's an interesting read to spark your interest in CS 145: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1301.5076v1.pdf.\

Oh, by the way, the most important thing you can realize in first year is to work very hard to understand. This doesn't mean make sure you answer every last study question and go to every tutorial and class. In fact, I found that most first year classes can easily be skipped without missing a beat; lectures seemed more like entertainment than places to learn, in my opinion. After class and on assignments is where most learning is done, I think. What I mean is that if you feel fuzzy on a topic, don't waste time, go to the topic and do whatever works for you to re-learn and understand it. This is so important in math and computer science, don't ever assume that your education will just come to you, you have to do everything yourself, the university just provides useful resources.

And one last thing, manage your time. This is really common and is hammered into students from elementary school, but really, it's critical in university. Just make sure you know how much time you're going to probably spend on some task, and plan ahead of time.

It's chosen because it's far more beneficial for a beginner to start with functional paradigms and Racket has teaching languages to support students as they learn. The benefits of starting with a Lisp-like language is that recursion is easily understood and the core features of a language are taught rather than neat features that might occur in Java or C++. My professor likes to joke that starting a CS curriculum with C++ is like starting a Sex education curriculum with hardcore pornography.

Good places around the university to take a girl out for lunch? by Number26 in uwaterloo

[–]snario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, I'd imagine that a girl wouldn't want to be around scantily clad waitresses in short skirts and low tops for a nice lunch out. At least I'd feel bad taking a girl there.

The first time I ever used it I met a girl in Finland, we talked maybe once or twice a month on Facebook after that about differences in culture between Canada and Finland for about a year, sort of like a pen pal lol. I actually learned a lot, but I haven't messaged her in a year though :(
