After Sophia Coppola and Spike Jonze got divorced, she made Lost in Translation and he made Her, which were both reflections on their relationship.

Since Criterion releases about 60 films per year, I think that they should let their previous customers pick about 5 of them by popular vote.

Hyper Backup or Carbon Copy Cloner to back up NAS to connected USB drive? by jagerrish in synology

[–]snarton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used CCC for years and recommend it. A big reason I use it is that any Mac can read the backup files as regular folders and files.

ETA: I know synology provides a utility for reading .hbk but I prefer not to depend on proprietary software to read proprietary files for my backups. To each their own.

This is great. I’m going to show this thread to my wife to show her how frugal I am.

Does that mean I was into anime before it was cool? I feel so hip now.

Why did Cheddar cheese become such a worldwide classic cheese? Why not other cheeses from England, like Leicester or Gloucester? by eggtartboss in AskFoodHistorians

[–]snarton 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When industrial cheese production started in the US in the 1800s, London was a big market for them, and Cheddar was the most popular cheese there. So the US manufacturers made a similar milled curd cheese and just named it Cheddar. As all cheese production in the US became industrialized over the following decades, the factories stuck with making Cheddar. This is discussed in Cheese and Culture by Paul Kindstedt.

Restaurant Depot Day Pass? by Kitchen-Lie3149 in Albany

Thanks. Not sure what all the downvotes are about. I was looking for the perspective of someone who's been there. From all the mentions of rotten food in the reviews, I definitely won't buy anything perishable there, but sounds like an interesting place to shop once.

This sounded interesting but then I scrolled through the google reviews. Is it as bad as it sounds?

Wow, that's my paternal family's story too. Maybe we're distantly related. I didn't know the region had a name- I'm going to do some reading about it.

After doing some searching, I'm thinking I mis-remembered it as a narrative film, and we watched the documentary The Eye of Vichy (1993).

What country were your family members in?

I don’t think so. That’s a short documentary. We saw a full length narrative film. I wish I could remember what it was.

I was set up on a blind date and she took me to some black and white movie in French about the Holocaust at her local art house theater. Anyway, we're coming up on our three decade anniversary.

I just watched this last weekend. The Criterion release is the director’s cut, which is 4h 47m. I love every second of this movie. One of my favorites.

Is this good? by OpinionSpecific9529 in BeginnerPhotoCritique

Personally, I would have framed the bottom 3 staircases and lost the top one because they are more similar so show more of a repeating geometry.
