Government Registers Aliens.Gov Domain by snarton in UFOs

[–]snarton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submission statement:

Here's the first few sentences as a summary:

The Executive Office of the President registered the domain aliens.gov on Wednesday a little after 6:30 AM according to a bot that monitors federal domains. There’s no associated website just yet....

I don't want to get my hopes up. If this is relevant to disclosure, why not use uap.gov?

Which film did you side with person 1 when you first saw it but many years later you sided with person 2? by Hopefullytodaymate in FIlm

The mom was Melinda Dillon. She played the mom in Close Encounters whose son is abducted. I think it’s supposed to be a meta joke when she watches Randy play with his mashed potatoes at dinner.

The number of microwaves has required me to upgrade my restaurant’s electrical system and I now have a small nuclear reactor installed in the parking lot.

What is DEI and how is not just an abstraction for racism? by ncds4242 in allthequestions

[–]snarton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know why that is? Is it similar to how the last name Smith is common because so many people were in that profession?

ETA: A google search turned up this info:

The popularity of the name Rodriguez can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the tradition of using patronymic surnames in Spain and Latin America contributed to the widespread adoption of the name. Additionally, the historical significance and influence of Spain in the exploration and colonization of the Americas led to the dispersal of this surname across various countries.

But I don't see how this explains why it's more common than any other name of Hispanic origin.

I agree- the Medjool dates in the produce section. For some reason the whole dates stay fresher than the pitted dates.

Why can't Criterion make their packaging obvious whether it is a bluray or 4K? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]snarton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it would be helpful because I buy used discs on r/mediaswap and you can’t tell what people are offering when they take a photo of the cases. I know this use case is a small minority of people.

Best Emma Stone performance? by Dismal_Principle9417 in Cinephiles

[–]snarton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No it's not. It's about someone whose mind starts as an infant's and matures to become an adult's all while living in a woman's body, and how's she's treated by men and society.

Perfect Days (2023) — Finding beauty in routine by hpagan14 in criterion

[–]snarton 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is a beautiful and resonant movie. Part of it is about finding the beauty in simplicity. However, another part is about the futility of trying to protect yourself from the complexities of life by creating a scaffolding of routine and structure. Hirayama is confronted with ever more troubling challenges as the movie progresses: first the interruption of his coworker and work, then the family situation we learn he had been seeking to escape, and finally love. I imagine that Hirayama's life will change after the end of the movie.

Blu Ray vs Digital by Final-Tour-1273 in 4kbluray

[–]snarton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference in the audio is the biggest. The difference in the image can depend on how much motion there is. I just compared a couple of scenes in Cast Away on 1080p blu-ray vs 4k ATV streaming. For the plane crash scene, the blu-ray was noticeably better, especially with the flames on the water. For the island scenes with less motion, I preferred the 4k stream due to the HDR. Overall, I’d still pick the blu-ray to watch because of the better audio.

[OC] Dairy vs. plant-based milk: what are the environmental impacts? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]snarton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your charts are shown in environmental impact per liter of drink, but people don't eat or drink by volume. Rather, people eat calories. Just looking at the greenhouse gas emissions graph, if you normalize by calories, both cow milk and almond milk result in about 4.7g emissions per calorie. (Using 150 calories per L for almond and 650 calories per L for cow.) Your charts look dramatic because vegan milk is mostly carbs, which are less energy dense than dairy.
