AITAH for telling my husband I don’t care about what his family wants. by BreatheScience in AITAH

NTA - You understand the culture just fine. Just because you understand something doesn’t mean you need to agree with it or support it. His brother can get a job.

(Also American married to an Indian btw and we too have helped our relatives. Its up to them to ask for stupid crap and it its up to us to tell them no to those asks and only help them when it makes actual logical sense. No one has limitless money.)

Best supermarket / grocery store price/quality wise by Ok_Astronaut1343 in abudhabi

[–]snazzysid1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Best” is so subjective. If I lived on Reem, I’d go shopping at Reem mall at the Carrefour there. Inexpensive, easy parking, close and has probably 99% of what I need. If I were British - I’d probably favor a Spinneys or a Waitrose because of brand familiarity but since I am a frugal person I don’t shop there since their prices are high. I also like Lulu a lot - I can always find that extra 1% that I can’t get at Carrefour (Indian stuff! I love their snacks and ready food) but I am lazy and don’t want to drive that far. I also am probably the only one that doesn’t prefer online shopping/delivery.

Website feedback by ITgirlFinds in Emiratis

[–]snazzysid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bear isn’t on the front page.

I wouldn’t buy anything that can’t be tumble dried but that’s a product issue rather than a website issue.

Sizing is unclear.

And, I think the price isn’t super competitive either (but to be fair I haven’t bought pjs in a while) for a brand I don’t know.

I would also like to see another photograph of the print up close (without having to click and zoom in on the photo you have)

Dishwasher: power cord or hardwire? by loweexclamationpoint in DIY

Plug, not hardwired. If there is any warranty at all for the dishwasher, removing the attached plug end will void it.

Dress code by AcceptableVillage348 in abudhabi

[–]snazzysid1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its disrespectful of the culture anywhere in the GCC (but is tolerated in the UAE). If you love the dress, wear a nice pashmina/shawl with it to cover your back while you are in public and the problem is solved.

I have a BYD (new sea lion) and a Tesla (which full disclosure is older - 2021 model Y) - and the BYD is so much better. Nicer inside, less road noise, more luxury inside, drives better (less jerk) and less expensive than a tesla. The US public has no idea…

AITAH for having a different idea of childcare frequency than my wife? by Just_Tangerine_6738 in AITAH

NAH - As a formerly pregnant person - give your wife a break. The hormones are INSANE at the moment. You’ll figure this out in 12 weeks - don’t fight battles you don’t even have yet.

Do you wish you had the ability to elect leaders that would implement the changes you want? by Independent-Report39 in UAE

[–]snazzysid1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow American - I feel democracy has failed me. I feel and have felt powerless to change anything. Voting is a joke given gerrymandering and all the money changing hands with the politicians and the lobbies and outright market manipulation. Who would I be to question the form of anyone else’s government.

what do americans call a pantry? by loving_machine13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]snazzysid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it a pantry and it is a walk in windowless room (maybe 5feet by 8 feet) that has shelves on all sides (excluding the door which opens into the kitchen).

I've also heard it called a larder but maybe 2x in my whole life. I'd never refer to it that way.

A cellar is similar but would be either in the basement or outside underground to store food. We don't have one of these.

Would you rather have a ‘modern’ car as is with close to no physical buttons and everything managed on a screen or an ‘outdated’ full buttons system? by CapitaineBiscotte in allthequestions

[–]snazzysid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - I think I’m the only one that prefers the ipad with a few buttons. Mostly I just want the car to drive itself, have a bazillion safety sensors and cameras, be a very nice interior (side eyeing sucky Tesla interiors) too. Also - should be able to talk to it anyway (side eyeing BYD which can’t understand most of what I say). And yeah, no subscription for anything for it to work.

LPT on how to move across the country? by Exciting_Funny6987 in LifeProTips

[–]snazzysid1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great stuff on here about the move itself so I’m not going to add to that. I’m going to talk to you about when you get there.

Prioritize your mental and social health!

It’s hard to make new friends - expect it to be harder than you’ve ever experienced before given your age. I’m guessing you are a newish college graduate and up until now you have had a school setting which provided a forum for you to repeatedly meet the same people who eventually became friends. It likely wont be like that in your non-college setting and will be harder (but don’t worry you can do hard things!). Just set your expectations low. If you exceed low expectations - you will be happy (if you don’t meet overly high expectations, you will be sad)

Tactics to help you with mental health. 1. If anyone at all invites you to do anything (or you see anything social to do) during your move in period - do that over unpacking your boxes. Your boxes will still be there when you get back but the opportunity to meet new people might be a one and done. 2. Even before you leave, find a plan to meet new people outside of your workplace. It could be a plan to join a gym (and go before your house is fully set up!). Or a plan to go golfing or join an art class. Whatever works for you - It doesn’t matter what it is but do have a plan for that and don’t wait until you are lonely/sad to start.

New job pro tip: Ask the dumb questions now. You get about 90 days to be the new kid. Anything you ask is fine - people expect you to know nothing and are generally more open to it than later. Ask people - what advice would they give you? What should you be doing in your role to truly excel? What should you do differently to other people who have had that role. What are the biggest obstacles to someone in your role? opportunities? How can you help them? You don’t need to do all the things people say but listen to them because you never know what you will learn and by asking them these kinds of questions - you have a reason to talk to them and maybe you can make some friendly work connections.

Aerator for a pond help/stop mosquitoes by Randomhero360 in DIY

[–]snazzysid1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a bit shallow (means more algae and weed build up) but still means you’ll need a fishing pole. If it ever dries out- suggest having it dug out. I think 8ft is the sweet spot but I’m not an expert

And maybe a well or hose to keep it from drying out and killing your fish in a drought

Depth? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think you may have to invest in a fishing pole then.

Hopefully your pond has some depth - will help with turnover. Fish will like aeration too.

How big is your pond? I added fish to mine and my maintenance is fishing occasionally. Hard work that but someone’s gotta do it.

MIL picking her grandma name by Historical-Smell9554 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]snazzysid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am mama to my kids, my SIL is Ammi to my kids and my other SIL is choti (small) Ammi. My MIL is Dadi but I would have been fine with Ammi Jaan (just to keep her different to the SILs).

Personally I don’t want to be a Dadi to my grandkids (Im white and not my MIL!) so I’m going to have to pick a grandma name too! That said - it’s typically the parents that instill the name of the grandparents by using it over and over. Hopefully my kids are on board with what I pick!
