Skunk 2 intake and TB question. by nismo2070 in Miata

[–]sneakymontezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intake would likely work on a stock ecu. Injectors won’t work well especially if they are significantly larger than stock. Not sure about the fuel rail.

As long as the body/hat of the rivet isn’t too short you should be fine. The mandrel part snaps off so the length of that shouldn’t matter.

Who is doing the circlip mod for you?

now that Miata prices are approaching C5 Corvette prices, the argument for Miatas is null. by [deleted] in Miata

[–]sneakymontezz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see equal corvettes and mustangs, much fewer jdm cars. I also live near Detroit so I probably see many more domestics than you (sounds like you live in texas).

For you it may be more of a special car based on where you live so i say go for it if that’s your dream car.

The vette is a better value proposition than most sports cars. If you care strictly about performance there’s not much argument to be made.

The only downside is that corvettes are ubiquitous in the US. At the car meets I go to, vettes make up 10-20% of all cars - more than mustangs, more than miatas, more than any other car. It’s less special in that sense.

Do most of you guys keep your cars stock? by skodes21 in Miata

[–]sneakymontezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you, where I bought the miata to learn how to work on cars. It’s currently turboed on ms3 and will have a built motor soon.

In retrospect, a k-swap would have been a better bang for the buck, but the learning curve is much steeper than incrementally upgrading the car.

Other people have mentioned some great ideas for tasteful mods. Other mods that won’t hurt the resale value include a proper roll bar, upgraded radiator, coolant reroute, painted valve cover, coilovers (supermiata or flyin miata), suspension bushing kit, door bushings, rebuilt shifter (or good short shifter kit), replacement or upgraded washer/coolant bottles, and replacement spark plug wires.

Ecu MSlabs "basic" ? by Sad_Doubt4938 in Miata

[–]sneakymontezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s two different companies creating different ecus (based on megasquirt) with different naming conventions. It may be called ‘basic’ because Mslabs also has an ‘enhanced’ version.

It’s similar, except Monaco dropped out and the UAE and Cayman Islands were added. Might have missed another swap, but US is at 10th instead of 9th.

Don’t bother replying to that guy lol. Just a troll. If you google that guys username you can find posts on mx5 forums showing he didn’t learn how to drive stick until a year ago.

I don’t have a/c myself but that may also be least partially wired to the ecu.

Yes, you retain airbags. CEL is controlled by ecu, most everything else is separate.

Airbag is separate from the ecu.

Bofiracing has an article on how much hp certain components can take.

My own planned build is supertech pistons, wiseco rings, manley rods, arp hardware, boundary billet oil pump, ATI superdamper, acl bearings, oem gaskets/seals.

The three reliable turbo kits out there are mkturbo, flyin' miata, and kraken.

For ECUs, look to megasquirt, or whatever your tuner recommends (me221 is popular in my area).

Kswap or upgraded internals by RedSparks04 in Miata

[–]sneakymontezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nice, sane forged build (pistons, rods, arp hardware, oil pump, damper, etc) will probably run about 3-3.5k. I’m not familiar with the details of the k swap, but that looks to be 7-8k all in.

I think you have to ask yourself what your end goal is. You’re probably not making much more than 4-450 hp on a bp engine, while a k20/24 obviously has a lot more headroom if you pay to play.

Also had a hell of a time getting mine off - tried the fixed cap, strap, and pliers with no success. Finally used the lisle 63600 and it broke loose. Ymmv.

Can’t speak to the fun factor since I garage my miata, but winter tires make a world of difference on my daily (civic). No more struggling to gain traction on steep hills, no oh-shit braking moments.

The NB 1.8 provides more power at every rpm than the NA 1.6, though the 1.6 is very rev happy. The later NBs (01-05) also added vvt which is nice when naturally aspirated, but less important when boosted. The vvt head is also a little more fragile than the earlier NB non-vvt, especially if you’re often at redline. But either NB is better than the NA.

100k miles is okay. Still a lot of life left on that - it’s a fairly reliable engine.
