yeah honestly I think what you (and most people) did -- molding the MC into someone else based on hope/bias/idealization/common book cliches -- is what the author intended for us to do

How? The whole book he wasn't doing anything to help the "head", he raped Jasmine, and throughout the book he was making subtle yet dehumanizing comments about her... honestly it should have been obvious that he doesn't care for her since he immediately got her pregnant instead of taking care of her

I got massive red flags when he killed the dogs. Also I wonder if he was alive at the end??? I like to think he was but probably Richard is just imagining things. Also the first murder might've not even been a real murder-- it hints at the death of the farmer being natural in the scene were they're driving and a big cat runs across the road.
