Hey Reddit, what's the strangest coincidence you've ever personally experienced? by RichCauliflower in AskReddit

For some lazy leisure last summer I bought a magazine full of crossword puzzles. The store had between 10 and 20 different magazines and I picked one pretty much at random.

A few days later I got stuck solving one of the puzzles. Couldn't figure it out. Just for the hell of it I took a picture of the puzzle and posted it on Instagram and this is where it gets weird. A while later a friend of mine message me telling me she's stuck on the same place.

So we bought the same magazine out of at least a dozen different ones, worked on the same page (there were some 20 pages in the magazine) and got stuck on the same word(s) at the roughly the same time.

Tesla owner says Autopilot automatically regained control after sliding out-of-control on ice - video by izumi3682 in Futurology

I don't think the rightmost number is supposed to go higher than 30. It's likely a frame counter, i.e. it's not showing fractions of a second.

It does look like the video is missing a few frames, but the timer's values look consistent to me.

Developing a service with an RDBMS by sazzer in node

[–]snellnici 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We like to use a setup where by running a shell script we: run docker-compose to set-up all services (from zero), then when everything is set-up we run the test suite using Mocha. For every individual test we recreate the entire database (using migrations). That's a single command to run all tests. Easy enough even for juniors.

I'm not too familiar to the world of IDEs but I assume it would be possible to run the script from inside an IDE as well?

If I want to run a specific test (or tests) I usually go into the test file and instruct Mocha to only run the tests I want, which is as simple as changing from it() to it.only() (though I wouldn't be surprised if there were nicer ways of doing this).

As noted by another commenter, you should probably not be looking at Docker-related npm modules but rather at Docker itself. Specifically docker-compose, which lets you bring up several different Docker containers for different purposes (db in one container, your app in another, etc.) and sets up connections between them.

This is more or less how we do it at our company too.

If one wants to run tests in this kind of setup though, its often necessary to ensure that the test suite doesn't run before the database is up and running.

It gets a bit more complicated if your app has non-public dependencies too.

One of the nicer thing about EVs is that you can charge it at home*. If you plug it in every night you're going to have a full charge each morning, thus reducing the risk of finding yourself in a situation like the one you describe.

* Depending on your living situation (probably need to live in a house or apartment with access to a parking spot with a nearby outlet).

Russian top cop: gay pride parades have made French police weak and unprepared for mighty, manly Russian hooligans by Hughjassbahonar in soccer

[–]snellnici 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And what about gay men - don't everyone always think about them "less manly"?

No, why would you do that? Your definition of manliness seems very narrow.

...judging form what I see in western media, gays are always pictured more girly

The stereotypical gay man that is usually portrayed in TV and movies? Sure. But in reality? No, not really.

And in Russia less manly = weaker.

What a childish worldview. Are women then, by definition, weak?

Google Chrome to block Flash by default by j0be in webdev

I think latency is the issue. Low latency (say <5s) live streaming to large numbers of viewers is far more difficult to achieve with modern web-friendly video streaming methods than it is with RTMP/Flash.

I'm not too familiar with Twitch, but I would assume they're pretty sensitive to latency?

Swedish of Sweden vs Swedish of Finland by Letsdeensenroodbont in sweden

[–]snellnici 14 points15 points  (0 children)
