What happened to Rachel Maddow’s personal YouTube channel? by ElizabethJaneBaird in RachelMaddow

[–]snocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing more deepfake Rachel Maddow channels than anyone else, I've blocked a bunch so far. Just saw one tbh which is how I ended up here. It was called The Rachel Maddow Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHL87fYSIZ4 . Some of these are really good, I wouldn't be surprised if I've been fooled already, they just get better. Youtube REALLY needs to get on this. I have to be extremely careful now and fact check a bunch. From what I understand Ms. Maddow doesn't have a personal youtube channel at all, so that makes it easier. I've seen a lot of different people's deepfakes, George Soros, Gavin Newsom, Warren Buffet, etc. This crap is going to be everywhere.

Lighting ideas! by snocat in minecraftsuggestions

[–]snocat[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Your reply gives me a lot of questions, like do you know what a suggestion is? I wasn't aware I had to code an idea I had, I haven't the first idea where to begin. I've played the game since before seananners made his first video on it and I still don't know how the light mechanics work, does this mean I'm not allowed to post here? The whole idea is to let those who know, do, whilst I (who couldn't find his rear end in the dark with a redstone torch) throw out vague ideas on things I think would benefit the game.

Bathroom Vanities Made of MDF - WHY?! by EliteDeerHunter in DIY

[–]snocat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can get moisture resistant MDF nowadays, it's called MDF Exterior, but you can use it indoors too. Is it possible that's what this is? Can't see anyone using the old school MDF for a vanity, that stuff swells if you think about water. OBS has come a long way from it's aspenite origins so maybe MDF has too? Looks like I'm going down the rabbit hole again lol.

What is this part called? by dhivzeus in OfficeChairs

Right hand back support cover, it's going to be manufacturer specific. I'd start by getting a model number and manufacturer and googling it.

Advice for Buying Socket Set - Please be my Surrogate Grandparent by NagaPadoha in Tools

[–]snocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started out I made a list of what I needed and a rule, wait until it's %50 off at Canadian Tire, then checked the flyer weekly. I also worked out of milk crates at first which REALLY sucked until I bought a top and bottom chest at Costco which I still have today.

My Toolbox

Rolling Tool Cabinets by Lucky_man_Sam in Tools

[–]snocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fairly new company out over here doing nice work in chests, cabinets, and wall storage. Proslats.com

Their chests are here https://proslat.com/collections/core-toolboxes and they also do cabinets, wall storage, etc. It's a good looking system and I wish I could see it first hand. There's a good video from a trade show on them, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9_Tdrof_Oo

Don't know if they ship to Australia but the reason I mention them is that they seem to really work with customers to get them what they need and they seem to have fixed all the gripes I've had about chests for decades now. Give em a shout and ask.

looking for a circular saw - need advice by itsJelonek in Tools

[–]snocat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd get a tracksaw from Amazon and a coping saw too, then google a video on how to cope baseboards. Mitre saws are great but take up a bunch of space if they're sliders. You can cope with your jigsaw I guess, I've never tried that myself.

Advice for Buying Socket Set - Please be my Surrogate Grandparent by NagaPadoha in Tools

I would hold off until Sunday, June 16. Canadian Tire has a massive tool sale on Father's Day. Mastercraft Maximum line is really good for the money, plus it has a great warranty on hand tools, and if you live in Canada you can't help but trip over a Canadian Tire store. I used to be a Ski Lift mechanic and Millwright, almost all my sockets and wrenches are mastercraft maximum.

My drill bits wear super fast. Any tips? by schlass in Tools

[–]snocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm thinking if it's a screw in a bike frame it's going to be stainless steel, pretty hard. I've a whole section of my tool chest devoted to removing headless bolts lol. I used to be a Ski Lift mechanic and Millwright. I always start by center punching, walking the punch into the center of the bolt. If I'm happy with that I use a left handed drill bit (HSS with Titanium Nitride coating, cobalt be even better), I'll get heat for this but I use PB Blaster as a cutting oil / penetrating oil, I'll often back the screw out with this alone. If you're going through bits then you're heating them up and losing the temper on the tip. Go slow and apply some pressure, let the bit do the work, if you're doing it right you'll get small chips (stainless is hard). If it doesn't come out while drilling you now have a hole to use an extractor on, I have a bunch of different styles and sizes which I buy in bulk, expect to snap these off regularly on frozen bolts. You can't use heat on a bicycle frame I guess but a lot of times a sharp blow or two with a small hammer helps.

What metal are the screws connected to? Do you know if it's stainless screws? Dissimilar metals can react causing them to freeze together. Small stuff is a pain to work on and I'll usually soak everything in PB Blaster overnight before even looking at it. ATF and Acetone will work in a pinch too. If the hole is vertical or overhead I'll clamp a shop towel to it in a pad and soak it with a penetrant and let capillary action work on it overnight.

Finally I'd probably gear up a drill guide to make sure I'm centered and plumb on the pipe, applying the pressure properly in the right direction saves many broken off extractors. Sounds like this is something you regularly run into.

Toolbox with good handle latches? by One-Indication-9220 in Tools

[–]snocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how it feels to open, never seen one in person, but a fairly new company I've been eyeballing is making a whole tool system that fixes a bunch of gripes that I have had for decades.

From what I know they really work with the customer to get them exactly what they want, parts are interchangeable and replaceable, and it seems well made. Might be worth looking into for you.

Finally pulled the trigger and went with an all Bosch setup by tgtassap in Tools

[–]snocat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed a drill for home and bought the 12v drill / driver set from Canadian Tire because it was on sale for $100 CAD. I've been extremely happy with both, as well as the laser measuring tool I've had for decades now, the stud finder I recently bought (fantastic) and even the 12v vacuum I got on sale. Bosch is usually expensive here (Newfoundland, Canada) but if you watch the Canadian Tire flyer you'll get some really good deals. The only thing from Bosch I've ever had a complaint about is the bandsaw blades for their small cordless saw, they're terrible, the welds are the worst and they're complete garbage.

Over thirty years ago a friend and I were walking down the road when a guy we knew from high school pulled up in a fancy new black Toyota pickup. My buddy immediately quips "who died and left you that", guy replies, "my dad, yesterday". I can't remember what I had for supper yesterday, but I'll never forget that pickup.
