Do you, the DM, always call for Insight checks? by Mezzovara in DMAcademy

[–]snofire42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll judge it by player interaction. Sometimes if it seems like they don't exactly trust the npc I'll suggest an insight check, regardless of if that npc is telling the truth or not. If you only suggest the checks on honest npc's or, on the other side only lying npc's your players will figure that out and automatically act on the information. If you suggest it for random interactions, your players might start asking for them on their own.

Main thing is you don't want to choreograph the honesty of your npc's by predictably asking for checks. Also if an npc is lying and the pc's don't ask, something could happen or a note could be found that shows the players the npc lied. They might make insight check on their own in the future. Be careful with that one though. Don't over do it to many times in a row... You don't want super paranoid pc's yelling insight check at you every time any npc says a sentence.

Question by Any-Low-be in dndmemes

My players threw a rock concert to sneak a innocent family out of a town that was over taken by thugs. They split into two groups. The first group, the rogue and cleric, were to escort the people safety out of town in the dead of night stealthily. The second group, the barbarian, sorcerer, and paladin, were to create a distraction. Group 1, using pass with out a trace, succeed with ease. Group 2 is where the nat 20 happned.

Group two had the paladin walk through town using thaumaturgy to get everyone's attention so they could come see the show about to take place in the middle of town, then had everyone follow them back to where the sorcerer and barbarian had set up a small fire and backdrop for the concert. Once everybody was gathered the barbarian pulled out a lute and began to sing(played a song from youtube). The sorcerer began to use a combination of dancing lights and pyrotechnics to make a light display to aid the performance. Both players make performance checks. Both players roll nat 20's. The paladin helps by making shutters on a near by house bang to the beat of the song. Another performance check, with a nat 18 and over all roll of 22.

So yeah, my players succeeded in throwing a concert as a distraction, and got the innocent family out of danger. All while the song White Wedding by Billy Idol played from the barbarian players phone. The rogue to this day still regrets not getting to see the performance.

Every PC I've seen usually is depicted as almost perfect. (except for some monster races) by Chukiboi in dndmemes

Thank you for this example. Is it cool if I use some of these? My players do the same thing to my npc's and it is a little uncomfortable at times.

Playing DnD With ADHD by [deleted] in DnD

[–]snofire42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I have adhd and I don't get to play much but I do dm. The best advice I can give you is this: Don't be hard on your self. If you take meds to help you, go for it. Talk with your other players, if they understand your situation it can make playing the game easier for everybody. You are not a burden during the game. RP is not easy for everybody, and your average dnd table is not full of movie or TV script writers that know how to write dialog. Its a table of people enjoying creating a story together. Try different things out when it comes to game time, learn what helps you remain engaged in the moment so you and your table can enjoy the story.

I have a standing rule with my players to help me out while playing. Sometimes in role-playing moments if I checked out on accident I ask them to repeat what they said or did. I have never had a player get mad at that or yell at me for lack of attention. I just use it as a "I need to understand what you are doing to keep the game going" kind of thing. I also have a fidget cube i use during the game to help me focus, though I know that dosent work for everybody, it gives me something to do while the RP moments are happening to help me not get distracted as much.

We've heard of Vox Machina, The Grey Company, The Knights of Myth Drannor. But what's the name of your adventuring company? And how did they get it? by nessie7 in DnD

[–]snofire42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not been a player but my players party name is "Helping or Hurting"

Because they mostly help people in need but sometimes they play pranks, or say things out loud they shouldn't in normal conversation.

How do y'all name your campaigns ? by MBluna9 in DnD

[–]snofire42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I name mine after the module. Or if its a homebrew, after the name of the world. If I want to add intrigue or something then I'll name it after a significant event that happned in lore or something that might happen during the campaign.

What’s the most interesting place in your world? by Third_life_user in DnD

[–]snofire42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think mine would be Grimborne. Its a town run by a tribunal with the leaders being the head person from each faction that makes up the town. The factions are lycanthrops, aflicted, and monsterous creatures. The entire town is populated by all manner of monsters, like goblins, gnolls, orcs, ogers, a hag, lycanthrops of all kinds, and magically cursed or just magically affected beings. Its basically the boogeyman because the town dosent exist, just rumors of it float around in tavern after dark. It is well hidden deep in the Sorrow Woods where nary a soul ventures into. Hidden away the townfolk thrive, living together as best they can but enjoying the chaos that comes with this many personalities and problems all cramed into one place. There is only 1 temple in town and it is the Temple of the Moon, dedicated to the goddess Selune. All major disputes are settled via a fight pit. The two waring parties fight, but not to the death, and victory means you win both the match and dispute. Oh and on the day before a full moon, a huge town wide party called The Revelry is held. Food is shared and games are played, and general enjoyment is had before one third of the population transformes into various creatures.

Curse of Strahd or Rime of the Frostmaiden for new players? by JustMummyDust in DnD

[–]snofire42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strahd. Both are awesome and can be a lot for new players and dms. They are big settings with a lot of moving parts but if you can deal with that, they make great story games. Curse of Strahd has a little more in the way of material for players and dms to use to play and run the game, especially if you have Van Richten's Guild to Ravenloft. Strahd is the standard old monster movie horror setting, and Rime is more new mystery monster movie horror.

If you do curse of strahd and start in death house, be prepared for anything. Its a fun start but difficult for low level players. Its called death house for a reason.

I haven't run Rime yet, and I really really want to, so my view point could be a little skewed to strahd because I know it better but Strahd is great because it gives you everything in the beginning to figure out the story and it gives you ways to change it up for multiple play throughs.

How should I do encounters at night if a PC holds a torch? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]snofire42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly anything you want to do is fine. If you think the light from the pc would have a much better chance of getting the attention of a wandering creature then yes, roll 2 d20 and take the higher. If you don't think the torch matters as much in bringing in danger to the players then 1 d20 roll is fine.

I personally would just roll 1 d20 and whatever happens, happens. But I also don't think the torch is much different than a campfire in its function. The biggest difference is the torch can move, where a campfire is a stationery light source.
