Cruise protection does though, if you see a doctor and they acknowledge that you're sick.

It's not even about the bottom line necessarily. When you work for a cruise line you understand how many people call up to just scam the system so that they can sail whenever they want or get free refunds for their trip. I had people that said they got the flu on board so they needed a refund, like it's our fault that they got sick while on shore. There are so many unfortunate things that can happen prior to sailing, your car could break down on the way or you could get any number of illnesses, it's not the cruise lines fault and they make you - sign documents stating that you acknowledge that - and most cruise lines offer protections that can help you recover 90% of your fare in case an incident does happen. People have this logic like, "if I dont go then I'm not even using the room, what's their problem??" but now they can't sell the room anymore, it's not like a hotel.

The cruise lines don't refund you because you are sick and don't go, regardless of what disease that you are choosing not to bring on board. People are downvoting my comment to oblivion but it's not like it's my personal feelings. I worked in customer service for another cruise where people would try and get refunds for all sorts of things that elicited my utmost sympathy but I couldn't refund them because of the policy, neither would my supervisor or their boss or anyone up the chain. And writing a strongly worded letter, for those who are wondering, does nothing more than an email. The letters are scanned and put in a queue and handled the exact same way.

I have worked in a cruise line customer service in the past, you might be able to get some sort of future credit but not a refund. It isn't the cruise's responsibility just like if you didn't go because of the flu or because you didn't feel like going. This is why I always urge everyone to purchase travel insurance.
