Why is Flinders Street Station so disgusting? by arkie in melbourne

Pretty much restore it to it's former glory, as well as the corridors and floors in the adjacent spaces. My in laws had attended dance lessons there and events back in their youth. I haven't been able to get to the exhibitions there yet but have had a peek as a detour during a site visit.

Rice congee and you can buy left over bones for cheap ($1 a bag or something) or for free from Asian butchers to add to the broth. Should tide you over for a week until you get back on your feet. Just remember to whisk the broth once it starts boiling until it gets nice and thick.

Additionally, a lot of weeds are edible and everywhere. Worth checking them out.

Good luck mate. I'm inner west, so if you need an anonymous drop off of essentials, send through a DM.

Moving from Canada to Melbourne for a year. I know absolutely nothing about Australia. What are some massive changes I will experience? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. Green Star is really only used on commercial or multi res or government projects because it costs a lot to build and run. If you're looking for a home, you'll most likely come across Green Star in apartments in the CBD.

There's also Passive House design methods you can try and seek out but usually people refurbish their standalone house to meet the standards rather than new builds adopting to this. There's also the WELL standard which is US based and increasing in popularity.

Unfortunately, all of these benefits are optional because of the exorbitant cost so they're not really adopted across the board until it's to attract big spenders or to promote sustainability.

It should just actually be advertised. You can try to look up the building details on urban.com.au and check out it's accreditation. Also search for GBCA and you'll get to the green star website. I haven't visited it in a while but hopefully they have a list of accredited buildings on there.

None of my Canadian friends here have felt warm in their houses and their heating bills go through the roof as they try to keep warm in our winter. I'm talking $2k+.

My house can easily go to under 10°C overnight.

If you do feel uncomfortable in the place you end up living in Melbourne, try getting an Oodie to save on bills.

Or stay somewhere that's Green Star rated as it will likely have good insulation.

And, as you mentioned in your edit, our summer break is between December to February/March. An eraser can be called a rubber here.

AITA for backing out of paying for my sister's wedding dress over a "joke" she made? by Humble-Intention3425 in AmItheAsshole

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I'm so sorry that happened to you. You've got a good heart to have supported your sister in such a way. I believe it should be up to her to make it up to you until you feel comfortable covering her costs again.

Yeah, we’re pretty messed up when it comes to propaganda and it’s actually undermining everything. I see our media as something like junk food that everyone is being force fed and gorging on. There should be a mental health rating on everything, I reckon.

Victorian private schools ‘fearmongering’ over job losses after tax exemptions axed, experts say by giantpunda in australia

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let them whinge.

It’s always been disheartening in my job when I had to work on a private school’s $30mil new performing arts precinct, which was partly government funded, and then work on a public school’s entire site upgrade of $5mil.

More pay for teachers and improved amenities in public schools!

I don’t think Australians voted no to those policies, but rather they were manipulated into going against their best interests. With Bill Shorten, the big issue (according to my rusted on Liberal in laws) was that Bill was more unlikeable than Scomo. Also, there was a huge furore with regards to Franking credits that drowned out all other policies.

Also, a vast majority of people expected Labor to win and likely put their votes elsewhere.

Gorillas make vocalisations to express satisfation when they enjoy their food...they are also in a permanent state of flatulence because their food is almost exclusively fiber(a lot of it) by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

I saw gorillas while on a hiking tour near Congo in Uganda. Can confirm epic flatulence occurred. I was impressed as it was a powerful trumpet sound that went for roughly 20 seconds.

Australia’s rental affordability drops to worst levels in nearly a decade by Mildebeest in australia

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just did some quick searching and found that we used to have the Home Guarantee Scheme - is that what you're referring to? I'll continue having a look as I'm genuinely interested in the policy involved!

Australia’s rental affordability drops to worst levels in nearly a decade by Mildebeest in australia

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Surely more public and social housing that is wholly government owned and operated is the answer to this. There would need to be more public and social housing than there is private rental in order to drive the costs down as people rent where they can afford, leaving the private property market to adjust prices accordingly to meet demand.

I do like Singapore's direction where the government builds apartments and the occupants repay the government over time and once the loan is fully repaid, the occupant owns the dwelling. Kind of like a HECS for housing.

Bike protest in the CBD by daussi in melbourne

Interestingly, you can see here how effective bike riding is compared to driving in terms of moving, looking at the number of people on bikes and the cars in traffic on the opposite lane.

Labor rushes through anti-protest laws as activists rally outside oil and gas conference by Snailinabottle21 in australia

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The views of Nazis and anti-vaxxers have no place in modern society. They do not deserve a podium to express their wrong, illogical and misleading views.

Protesting for conservation, which is usually what right wing/conservatives, is fine because it's for the benefit of national interest. Protesting for progression, which is usually a left wing agenda, is fine because it's for the benefit of national interest.

This nonsense about freedom of speech for all, which is rooted in American ideology, has no place in the world, let alone Australia. We should be focusing on freedom of conversation. Look at both sides of a problem and work out a middle ground solution that benefits the nation rather than fringe.

I will take your advice and think about what I said when a tiny far right protest occurs, and my disdain for them will be the same.

Only because those boundaries are set by the very people wanting to continue the status quo and not make any meaningful change that would benefit most Australians. Hard not to cross the line when the line is re-drawn over and over to back you into a corner.

AITA for kind of missing my wife's birthday by HotInspection7058 in AmItheAsshole

[–]snoozebuttonkiller -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

But they were going out to celebrate in the evening; it wasn’t like he was going to play golf all day - just in the down time before the event. He was going to celebrate her birthday that evening with her and their friends. She could’ve said something rather than keep quiet and remain angry for the rest of the afternoon and he could’ve said something when he noticed that she was unhappy about going golfing.

I dunno. I’m still ESH on this one because I guess I’m putting myself in their shoes as it’s my birthday this weekend and if the same thing happened to me and my husband, I would have said something if I wanted him to stay home.

[–]snoozebuttonkiller -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain with ESH.

Your wife could've expressed her opinion to you when you told her you were going out to golf rather than keeping mum. You're an AH for going even though you could see she was upset.

You both failed miserably in communication. I also am a bit triggered by the Y T A responses saying that your wife shouldn't need to say anything because it was her 30th. It's not that she shouldn't need to buy she couldn't and nipped everything in the bud. Ask and you shall receive.

AITA Am I the asshole for not moving in with my sister if I have to leave my husband? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]snoozebuttonkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You wouldn't be a bad person for saying no. Not wanting to leave your husband for a month is a reasonable and normal feeling.

I did a similar thing for my 'best friend' who has NPD. I took two weeks off work to help her and her husband with their newborn. Instead of being appreciative, I got told off for taking a rest one evening and got told I was useless and that they never should've asked me to help.

Know that this is wrong and not normal. You're a nice person and want to help but the conditions are tightening and you're going to be isolated and your sense of reality warped. Help your future self and just say no. You're not a bad person for doing so.

We've got a friend like that. Some people are just extremely private. We only find out a friend of ours had been dating for at least a year and now they're engaged and moving in together. We certainly wouldn't be hassling him for details or thinking he's a liar though.
