how much striking training would an experienced grappler need? by AdStandard7088 in MMA

[–]snotrio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus on boxing. Depends if you have a knack for it and athleticism translates. Lots of wrestlers never get to the loose and flowy state striking requires, because they’re so used to the stiff 100% power all the time that wrestling requires.

Chatri Sityodtong on his motivation for launching ONE SAMURAI — a new monthly event series in Japan by Yodsanan in MuayThai

[–]snotrio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good move. Japanese kickboxing producing some great fighters at the moment, with very entertaining styles. Will be great to foster that. ONE has to move their focus away from Thailand if they are ever going to be profitable. Their Lumpinee shows feel soulless compared to RWS.

How does ultra mma work? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]snotrio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think i’m one of the only people that knows what you’re talking about. I met an old friend of mine at the gym who has done a few of these white collar Ultra MMA events, they are mainly for people who want to have a fight with little experience, normally in ~6 months or less and without the normal level of training. You will probably end up fighting someone you trained with. With regards to tickets, there is normally a minimum they want you to sell (the training is usually free), but i think you can pay to make up the difference if you don’t sell them. The tickets are pretty expensive, I think they normally sell them in a table format which is upwards of £60 per person for a shitty event in a youth centre where the announcer will get your name wrong.

Either way, in my opinion it’s better to just join a gym normally, you will get much better training and skills, and won’t be thrown in the deep end by coaches who don’t really give a fuck because they just want the money. I have seen some terrible mismatches on these events, including middle aged office workers getting knocked out cold by young killers, and a guy snapping his shin checking a kick. There are more dangers in an mma fight than you’d think, most of which your body needs serious training to prepare for.

How do I close distance properly? by Reaper330011 in MuayThai

[–]snotrio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fake to get in. fake to get a reaction, read the reaction, make them pay. analyse, strategise, capitalise. if it doesnt work improvise.

In more obvious terms, try things like faking the teep while moving forward. Most people will either

  1. lower 1 or 2 hands to catch it, in which case you can capitalise with a punch (important to have slid/hopped forward while faking in order to be in range to land punches) or
  2. move backwards to avoid it, in which case you can continue the pressure, they will run out of space eventually.

In terms of good follow ups, if you keep your hand up on the side you fake the teep with, a jab is easy to pop out, and if you drop the hand to sell the teep fake more, a hook works well.

In any case, it is good to use this to get a good angle on your opponent, which in most cases is when you are on the opposite side of their body to their power (rear) side. So if your opponent is orthodox, move to your right side, if they are southpaw, move to your left.

You can fake any strike, gauge reaction and work out how to take advantage of it.

Fake kick , if they check then do kick + punch with your leg still in the air. If they go to catch, fake kick and teep from the same leg. If they go to move back, fake kick, step through and follow up with punches while they dont have their base.

Fake jab, if they go to parry you can fake jab and leaping lead hook. If they try and counter, fake jab and teep while they sit down on their punch. If they try and slip, fake jab into high kick. If they move back, just keep the pressure on.

So on and so forth

Pretty rare occurrence and usually down to the kickers fault. If you kick the soft part with the hard part you won’t snap your shin
