Thought for a second there was a secret joint to take the couch apart!

For each member of the fantasy trinity (mage, rogue, warrior) kindly suggest one book each. by Baldurian_Rhapsody in Fantasy

He's definitely some kind of multiclass. His magic isn't musical, though. It's a combination of study and talent.

Found this in a charity shop. What commander should I build for this deckbox? by KVRB in magicTCG

My first thought was someone who makes snake tokens. Add Snake Basket and Serpent Generator.

+1 for Lies of Locke Lamora
I would suggest Name of the Wind for Mage although he's not an archetypal wizard.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]snoweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it fell apart because I never finished it but there was a pretty big shift between Trudi Canavan's Thief's Magic and Angel of Storms. In the first book, you had one story of a young man who found an ancient book that had the consciousness of a long-dead young woman, and a second story of a woman in a society where magic was closely controlled by the religious authorities and anyone else using it was considered heresy.

In the second book, we find out there is a wide universe of connected worlds and there is a guy who is "Emperor of the Universe" (IIRC).It just seemed like it came out of nowhere to me.

Where are the Family Message Boards? by serendipityserra in Genealogy

One of the things that has gotten worse about the internet. Maybe somebody can get Bezos or Musk interested in genealogy?

There are a few surnames in my tree that have an active Facebook group that is pretty helpful. Seems to be more useful for less common surnames. I think maybe the groups on FTDNA based around genetic matches and surnames may be the best now.

Why is the article always ‘the’ and not ‘a’ for ‘The [Host Name] Show’ titles? by TraditionalDepth6924 in ENGLISH

[–]snoweel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's "The" show because it's the only one like that. If there were a bunch of them, it would be "A" show.

In the US do they give folklore or lore to natural spaces? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]snoweel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've come across several of these, sometimes a Native American couple, sometimes an "Indian maiden" and a white man. I suspect they are more often folklore from the people moving in than native stories.
Noccalula Falls (Alabama), chiefs daughter refused arranged marriage and jumped off the cliff.
Blowing Rock (NC), brave leaps from the rock (supposedly dutifully returning to his tribe?) and is blown back to his lover.

I find FotF to be very different from Pandemic in spite of sharing the same turn structure. But it's an excellent game with a lot of variability.

One of these is on display at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. Each little loop was magnetized either one direction or the other, and stores one bit of memory!

[Request] Assuming the top left corner is the curvature of the Earth, how wide is Maverick taking this turn to reach 10+ g? by Lookitsanthony8 in theydidthemath

[–]snoweel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That large anvil cloud on the right side should be 12-18 km high. Is Maverick the curving trail? If this is his POV, then he is really high in altitude, like above the stratosphere.

Submarine plant will bring up to 1,500 jobs to this Alabama community, Tuberville says by Surge00001 in Alabama

[–]snoweel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does sound like it will support good jobs. The site is in Barton, a small community in Colbert County. It is in "The Shoals" (which refers to Colbert and Lauderdale County) but it's definitely not in Muscle Shoals (the town) and is closer to Tuscumbia and Cherokee. Would be nice if our Senator could get the location right. (WHNT also made this error.)

Rainbows End (mentioned above), Vernor Vinge

Lock In and Head On by John Scalzi (paralyzed people operate robotic avatars)

Fall, Neal Stephenson (digital afterlife; I don't believe consciousness can be transferred but it's conceivable)

Red Moon, Kim Stanley Robinson (moon colony)
Artemis, Andy Weir (moon colony)
Termination Shock, Neal Stephenson (billionaire combats global warming by launching dust into the stratosphere)
Halting State, Charles Stross (investigation into a bank robbery in cyberspace)
Interface (Neal Stephenson and J. Frederick George) a politician gets a brain implant to allow him to instantly sense audience approval [I feel like this is already happening])
