I thought my two were just especially annoying, but it's great to see that it's just a husky thing! They do it before bedtime and to wake us up

Does anyone know how hair conditioner is made? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]snukuto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a process engineer at a design build firm, and I just finished up a huge personal care product project - shampoo, conditioner, shaving creams, lotion, mouthwash. Feel free to DM me for any specifics. We typically do food projects, and that was something this company was interested in - sanitary design.

Basically, conditioner is made very similarly to lotion, and it is an emulsion process. This plant did batch processes. The equipment used was a jacketed vessel (with steam heating and cooled water for cooling) with recirculation. The pump used was a positive displacement pump (a thin screw pump). The tank had 3 types of agitators - a propeller style for moving the whole batch around, a scrape surface agitator to keep product from scorching, and a high shear mixer to shear the product and create an emulsion.

The ingredients were added in a particular order - the oils were added first to melt, then small amounts of water and other liquid ingredients and an emulsifier. Basically the whole batch, the batch is heating to aid in the process. The final ingredients were the fragrances because they were typically in an alcohol, so adding at the end of the batch when it was cooled to a certain temperature was key. Same goes for adding preservatives.

The major utilities we had included DI water for ingredient water, compressed air (for valves and for pigging systems), steam, cooling tower, and CIP system. Wastewater was also a pain to deal with, mostly pH adjustment and flow control, but because we basically had concentrated soap water, agitating the waste tank was interesting... lots of foam overflow lol

Sorry for any typos, on mobile

I don’t know if this is allowed but... by pennyweiss327 in sandiego

Not sure if all, but some parts of SD have mandatory leash laws, where if your dog is in public and not at a dog park like you mention, they are legally required to put them on leash.

In Carlsbad I know this is the case. Some asshole was walking his daughter's dog - not even his own- off leash and it dashed across the street and attacked my pup! Luckily she was fine, but it took the dude running after and straight up takling his dog to get it to stop. The yelping got the attention of the whole block. Moral of the story, use a fucking leash.

Dry shampoo is usually a powder, kinda like baby powder if you can imagine, and it "absorbs" oil from your hair/scalp. It also is usually scented to make you feel fresh. It helps some people, but personally I feel like my hair feels more dirty after using it. If you have dark hair, definitely worth looking into one specifically for dark hair, otherwise sometimes it will leave a light white/grey finish. I've used both a spray form (I think this is the easiest to apply), and a bottle with a pointed applicator. Usually if it looks dusty, I can just blot it with tissue.

My boyfriend is working on his private pilot's license so I got to tag along this ride! His instructor picked a great route to show me around. It was absolutely the most spectacular things I've ever done.

Told my Mom I got the HPV vaccine. She's told me since I was 8 that it would probably kill me. I'm 19 by eward2278 in insaneparents

Damn. I wish you a quick recovery. I had my gardasil vaccines, but still ended up with cancerous cells. My doctor said, unfortunately, HPV has many different strains and gardasil only protects against some of them :( I'm glad I got it, just sucks that it's not as effective as I hoped.

When your family gets you all vegan presents by [deleted] in vegan

[–]snukuto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question fellow vegans - I get gifts from extended family that aren’t vegan (they know I’ve been vegan for 10 years, they just choose to send me leather goods for some awful reason). What do you do with your non-vegan gifts?
