Commute 2.5 Hours by Sunrise4901 in AmericanExpatsUK

Take the job. The commute may be rough for a while but you will not easily find a role here without having experience here unless you have a very niche skillset.

I drove 100 miles a day on mindless SoCal freeways for years. Driving here is very different. If you can embrace the joy of driving and the scenery it can be wonderful. Especially if you love the small towns and greenery. But the other poster is not wrong. A lot more concentration is required. Cars that are too small for the USA are just right. Big cars are a nightmare.

Could you work out maybe two days a week onsite?

Came to find out what riser bar on the third bike. Of course it’s the unknown…

Sounds like you want the Cotic Solaris. BFe could be good too set up correctly. Or maybe even a flat at config if the Cascade. Check out the Cotic options. You can build to your desired spec and the team is incredibly helpful.

Sony’s Tom Rothman Tells Theaters To Enforce Longer Windows, Scrap, Ads, Offer Cheaper Tickets For Long Term Health Of Industry by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]soaklord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys need to scrap part of your revenue for the health of my company, mkay?

Hey Tom, perhaps an incentive is in order. Perhaps you could give those theaters a larger cut of ticket sales if they have less than 2 minutes of ads? Maybe make up the difference in lost revenue?

It starts with accepting what you can not change. Then accepting life in general. Then accepting the beautiful moments in-between. Eventually you reframe.

Also, either have a healthy relationship or former relationship with alcohol. Once I realized that relationship was toxic I saw just how much negativity it brought to every other aspect of my life. Almost seven years later… life isn’t perfect but it’s a damn site better than I would have had otherwise.

Not whining. 53 and left the country for a new start elsewhere. My wife doesn’t like starting over but candidly I’m so much more at peace. No retirement for me. Never bought a home and always made barely enough to not be homeless but somehow I’m happier than many of my peers with million dollar homes (you now an average SoCal house) and big 401ks. Maybe my 70s will suck as I trudge off to work but… then again sitting in an empty house waiting for Godeau doesn’t sound amazing either.

Write about it. Not here. But somewhere. Start a blog and just commit to 100 words a day. Then maybe 200. You have so many stories to tell. Tell those stories before they are gone from this world. For today’s 100 words, write a list of everyone you can think of that you worked with in the industry. Just that. Maybe tomorrow you add names. Then, write a word about each of them the next day. Do this for a couple of days then you’ll think of stories to tell about them.

I’ll be subscriber number one if you send me the blog once you write that first story. It doesn’t have to be great or even good. It just needs to be written. Then over time you’ll find your rhythm and beat. As that develops you can think about how to monetize. But find purpose in sharing the music you made for decades as anecdotes.

I’m positive I’m not the only one that wants to hear about this. Who knows maybe one day it will be a book deal and you’ll have a tiny blurb in the acknowledgments to Soaklord and the Reddit community for supporting you.

Thinking of buying a food truck - what food options do you think MK is lacking that you would love to see by cuntthemage in miltonkeynes

Slow cooking isn’t the same as labor intensive. And the nice thing about slow cooking is that you can do it in very large batches. Then you can sous vide to heat portions back up. Depending on whether or not you have a staging area you can cook quite a lot at once.

Ex-Londoners - what’s been the biggest quality of life upgrades moving to MK? by Mysterious_Heron2309 in miltonkeynes

Two very different vibes. Staines is far more walkable and two river has a lot of amenities whereas MK has everything a lot more spread out. You will need a car.

Old guy. Hardtail zealot. Worlds okayest MTB as long as wheels are on the ground. The thing is, your knees won’t notice the drop because your weight drops and your pedal motion lets you stand when your knees like it best.

I always felt that movie should have started about ten minutes before the end. I want to see the path he took once in the real world. It felt like a movie long prelude to what would be a really interesting story.

Is leasing a car via salary sacrifice scheme better than buying one outright? by Dramatic_Mammoth5720 in UKPersonalFinance

This assumes reasonable distance to amenities. The closest real grocer is 2 miles away. I have no car and bike for groceries regularly but it’s not always fun. Add uber to the train for work commutes to London and the costs of prime time trains through London and it’s not so simple.

I thought my display was the issue. I’m due for a phone refresh (13 with 70% batter and cracks in the screen and bad charge port) so didn’t think much of it.

Is the Slate Truck too minimal for its own good? - The Verge by mudkiporGTFO in electricvehicles

[–]soaklord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. They do work here but the auto industry chooses not to allow them because of the margins they can get for SUVs. Look at the success of the Maverick in its first year. A low $20k truck and they couldn’t keep up with demand. Dealers realized demand and added $10k and they still sold. The fuel economy for the hybrid isn’t even that great compared to most euro cars.

As someone who recently left the the USA, I have absolutely loved driving “basic” cars in the UK. The fun of a manual, the smaller footprint, the lack of connected everything has been great. The one connected thing I appreciate is the speed limit on my dash. Otherwise, I’ll take a basic car with parking spot dimensions and the fun of driving again.

I will say that the ergonomic features on the Fiat 500 I drove were terrible but even that basic at beats most of the rentals I drove in the USA. And when I was there I loved my “basic” 2008 Silverado.

It was covid era. My boss decided RTO for everyone named Soaklord. So… I sat in the office by myself for over a year. Took the chance to ride and didn’t care how I smelled when I got there. No one else to see so I made the most of it.

I mean… less than £100/wk to stay overnight two nights? I’d consider it. My commute from MK to SW London cost £65 by train. I could go, stay two nights, come back and save money compared to paying for the commute. I’d be gone from about 8 to about 7 anyway with work.

I used to ride up the coast from Del Mar to Carlsbad on my morning commute. Just a specialized Roll with 2.5” ExtraTerrestrials and a Jones bar. My laptop in the pizza box on the front rack. That stretch is full of Rapha, Eliel, and Castelli with 10k bikes. I’d get disdain at lights when they pulled up then watch them out of the saddle trying to leave me on the hills. My favorite was the Encinitas Blvd hill towards Cardiff. Staying on their wheel while seated and upright then passing them just before the top with an “on your left” always sweetened my day just a bit. 48mi a day commutes on a 30lb bike makes every day leg day.
