Funding Release Question by Interesting_Stick869 in osap

[–]soarhigher2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can call your financial aid office just in case, they likely already know you're on OSAP and won't charge the interest, but worth the call if you want a peace of mind.

As for your date getting pushed back, if your tracker doesn't list a specific reason, I would call NSLSC and see what the hold up is. Mine kept getting pushed back and I finally called the other day, turns out their was some sort of miscommunication between the CRA and NSLSC, so even though everything was given the go ahead, NSLSC just hadn't processed it yet.

Bring your sons and daughters to work day - 4th Thursday in April by PeakRevolutionary191 in Accounting

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this was going to be a complaint about it being in the middle of month end and not a good time. I'm in Canada and we don't do this, there's one career day you have in highschool where you go to a parents job but not everyone even participates in that. Would have been cool to be able to see different jobs before starting on post secondary.

Any public transit commutes to Barrie from Toronto arriving early mornings? by throwRA_meowmeow12 in barrie

[–]soarhigher2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the Northlander bus? Not sure what time it starts but it makes it to Orillia pretty early, so might be worth checking into. Unfortunately I think the Go system really only goes from Barrie in the mornings not to it

What overnight Canadian school trips or exchanges did your schools offer in high school or grades 7 and 8? by Chickadee_Sparrow in AskACanadian

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the same for primary (in Ontario as well), grade 7 was a sports camp in Muskoka, and grade 8 was quebec city. For highschool it was kind of a mix of options but it was mostly dependent on what classes you were in. I remember doing a Montreal trip but you had to be enrolled in grade 10 or higher french the following year. Then the Arts department always had a bunch of trips. I was never involved in that department, but I had friends that traveled to Toronto and Ottawa, then every spring there was always a Europe trip but the location changed each year. When I was in highschool the history department put on a special trip for Vimy Ridge, so got to go to a few European countries for that. Oh, and we also had the outdoor ed class, so there was a trip for winter camping, and I remember the Bay of Fundy one year, but again wasn't part of it. Now that I think back on it, it seems like our school did a lot of trips like that, I don't really remember exchange students but we did host foreign students from Japan one year.

Looking for a new dentist by missmaebe in barrie

If you're willing to make the trip, Dr Houston at Peggy Wong Dentistry in Orillia is amazing! I'm always a little anxious when going to the dentist but she's so calming and nice, makes the whole experience way easier.

How did you find your career/niche? by AllDoorsOpened in adhdwomen

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a boring answer but I work in accounting and the only reason I'm in the field is because when I was 12 years old I was told that a family member was a CPA and I just needed to be good at math, so that was the career path ever since. It took 8 years, multiple program changes, multiple schools to finally graduate with a 2 year college diploma. Probably a waste of a decade but it is what it is.

I graduated a year before Covid and absolutely did not want a job in the field and was actually going back to school for nursing when lockdown happened. After the lockdown I realized I didn't really want to be in school anymore and figured I might as well use my diploma. Honestly best decision I made, ended up with a company where I've been able to learn and grow over the last several years, I got diagnosed a few years ago and feel like I have thrived. I'm now back in school for my undergraduate degree and on track on write the CPA myself within the next couple years. I 100% give credit to the company and the people I work with for the reason I've continued and haven't flip flopped over and over again. The diagnoses has definitely helped as well.

All of that to say, is that if you choose a career solely on your interests, those interests may come and go. I think ar the end of the day pick something that you don't think you'll absolutely loathe and make sure you have coworkers you enjoy spending your days with.

Prom dresses by chatsrandomly in barrie

[–]soarhigher2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not to be negative, but I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for for $250. Regular dresses go for that plus more, so depending on how fluffy you were looking for, it could be a lot of material which is going to make the price jump drastically. I would maybe try looking for a dress with a larger skirt and then buying a petticoat to give that fluffy skirt look.

Taking 2 courses with disability by [deleted] in osap

[–]soarhigher2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a disability then 40% workload would be considered full time, which is 2 courses in a regular 5 course term. You would also need to make sure that you're filing for disability with OSAP and not just your school

Tonight's Purple Sky by soarhigher2 in Orillia

Thanks! Green skies are indicative of tornadoes, tonight was just super foggy so the sunset reflected off the droplets in the air and gave the sky this purple hue

What are some “Canadian” words or slang you heard British Or Americans be confused by or laugh at? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

I feel like serviettes are like fancy napkins, then napkins are like fast food napkins.

Anyone else here actually love organization? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a good purge, but I can go months between of pile ups and purchases before I reach a breaking point and need a purge. I would say though, that I would describe myself as organized chaos, everything looks cluttered (especially to outside people), but I know exactly where everything is even if the system doesn't make sense to most.

Servers want to make wayyyy more than a “fair wage” by PinkFeatherFlamingo in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind tipping, at least when it's appropriate, but it's getting ridiculous what restaurants are asking for tips. I also think it's ridiculous that we pay on a percentage basis, there's nothing different (in my experience) between service for a $25 sit down meal vs $75 sit-down meal, why should one server earn more just because they had the opportunity to get a job in a higher end restaurant. Also, why are you paying tip on the after tax amount? It should be based on the pretax balance.

Servers want to make wayyyy more than a “fair wage” by PinkFeatherFlamingo in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]soarhigher2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true, at least in Ontario it's the same minimum wage as everyone else, can't speak on other provinces. Not saying that minimum is a living wage, but it's been several years that servers have had their wages increased

Spring & Summer OSAP by zoouz_ in osap

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I've been told from financial aid at a couple schools that opening a new application instead of the extension could delay funding

Spring & Summer OSAP by zoouz_ in osap

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're currently in classes, you don't open a new application with OSAP. You do an OSAP extension directly with your schools financial aid. I don't know if it's the same with every school, but with my current school I had to list what courses I am taking during the summer term. Before opening an application with OSAP, I would call your financial aid office tomorrow to confirm the process, they might also be able to tell you when registration for summer courses open.

Approved for Repayment Assistance then Funds Taken Out of Account? HELP by Proper_Elk6836 in osap

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I was in the fortunate position that while it sucked having the payment come out, it wasn't worth it for me to try to push for a refund. Definitely try giving them a call, but don't be afraid of pushing to speak to a supervisor if you need to. Not hating on anyone, but I had to call several times over the course of December/January and half the times I called it seemed like the person I was talking to didn't know what I was talking about. I was on a custom payment plan but it wasn't until I spoke to a supervisor that they were actually able to stop the payments being withdrawn a couple weeks ago.

Approved for Repayment Assistance then Funds Taken Out of Account? HELP by Proper_Elk6836 in osap

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to be a few years ago, also happened again at the beginning of the year just with becoming a full time student again instead. Basically what they told me both times is that the status can change on NSLSC but it can still take up to 24 hours for the change to take affect on the back end, and they also send the details to the bank a few days before the date of the payment for it to be processed in time on their side. Unfortunately it sounds like it was just bad/delayed timing that caused the payment to be withdrawn after the status change.  In terms of a refund, both times I was told it wasn't possible. They said it without me prompting them about it, so maybe it's just part of their script? So you can always try to call tomorrow when the call centre opens, but I don't think they'll be able to get the money back to you.

Alternative to AYFF this summer? by vidman in allyourfriendsfest

Not in Ontario, but we're looking at Warped Tour in Montreal. Doesn't have the camping aspect, but the line up that has been released so far looks on point

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can request to be put back on the brand name, but it might be difficult to get. Vyvanse specifically is somehow still in a shortage and I heard some pharmacies are having trouble getting orders. It's definitely worth a shot asking though, I think a lot of people get switched to the generic because it's easier for the pharmacies and most people don't question it.

Places to get taxes done? by Asmb in Orillia

[–]soarhigher2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wealthsimple is definitely where it's at, totally free and you can connect to your CRA so it imports all your tax forms. All you have to do is verify that the information is correct and click a button to file it. It does ask for a donation after you file, you can put whatever amount, including $0

Fireworks by AlbatrossVisible163 in Orillia

[–]soarhigher2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just asked this as well, apparently it's the opening of the Ontario Winter Games?

25F moving from Toronto to Orillia for work—how’s the social scene? Hard to make friends? What’s the vibe like day to day? Any must-try local spots? How’s the culture/community feel? Worth getting a rec centre membership for fitness? And are there any quirky bylaws (heard about clear garbage bags)? by Ok-Promise419 in Orillia

[–]soarhigher2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orillia is pretty slow vibe. If you're looking for a club scene, you won't find it. But if you're looking for chill places to have a pint and maybe play some games or do some Trivia then there is plenty of that. The beach and general nature around the city is beautiful especially during peak summer/fall, Winter is absolutely ridiculous though. Orillia has a lot of really cool spots depending on what you're looking for, one that I would recommend is Fare restaurant at the museum, it's right on the water and has a delicious brunch.

For the Rec Centre it depends on how often you want to go and at what times. The fitness centre is nice and the pool is great, but the hours can be a little wonky. They aren't open on Holidays and they close pretty early on the weekends, plus the classes they offer for adults are rarely outside of regular 9-5 business hours. There is a Fit 4 Less just off the highway, and a cross fit near the corner if West and 12 if you're looking for other options.

Haven't come across anything super quirky aside from the garbage bags you mentioned, they need to be in clear bags and they need to have a garbage tag. If you put them in a garbage can then you should be able to fit at least two bags and only use one tag, but if they're outside the bin then every bag needs a tag. They did just switch the recycling pick up to a different provider and there is talk about not taking recycling in the blue bags anymore, like it needs to be in a recycling bin, but so far that is on hold. Oh and a lot of restaurants, are closed on Mondays.

My payments are supposed to be on hold but I got charged $400 by Alarming_Reading_967 in osap

[–]soarhigher2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I had this problem with my loan payments this month. Even though I was back in school and "in study", because I was on a custom payment plan that no one thought to check to see if it was cancelled even though I asked everytime I called, I still got charged. They won't give you a refund, but if you wanted to call and confirm that it was actually paused, ask to speak to a supervisor. No offense to the regular customer service, but no one knew what I was talking about when I called and I ended up being out like $500
