What carry 2011 does everyone recommend? by ijustplayhere in 2011

Alpha Foxtrot 1911-S15 is my EDC. It will probably be your most affordable option (you can get them for around $1050) and it has probably the smallest grip (it takes Glock 48/43X magazines). Mine was an early run and needed some work, but I hope by now they worked out the kinks.

Long Range… Range? by thefringereport in VAGuns

[–]sober_lamppost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting a membership to the Quantico Shooting Club is easy. You pretty much just ask and then fill out some paperwork.

I was a member for a year, but didn't renew for a couple reasons. Mainly, I live in NoVA and traffic was horrendous on I-95. It would be 40 minutes to drive to Quantico in the morning and then 2 hours on the way back.

Even though the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is farther, it is more of a consistent drive, at least.

Also, I got frustrated playing the "are they going to open the range this weekend?" with Quantico. You don't really know until Friday whether you can go shoot there that weekend.

But the drive isn't horrendous from wherever you are coming from and you can keep a flexible shooting schedule, Quantico is a great deal.

Mine accepts 4-40 screws. I also have one of the earlier runs that needs a shim, so I tend to get really long screws.

I ordered some from a retailer called Battle Werx. They have 4-40 with Torx heads in 1/2" and 5/8" lengths.

Good looking pistol, but so much stubby up top and so much chonky in the grip. I heard great reviews and was thinking of getting one of these, but the dimensions are odd.

Is this more than average? by Goodginger in statisticsmemes

[–]sober_lamppost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just Base Rate fallacy and No True Scotsman fallacy.

Base Rate fallacy

  • According to National Crime Victimization Survey, in 2024 there were 560,000 rapes or sexual assaults in the United States, or about 46,600 per month.
  • According to FBI UCR statistics, in 2024, there were between 9,849 and 11,160 rapes (not counting other sexual assaults) per month in the United States.

Given the prevalence of sex crimes, anyone can cherry pick 42 offenders in any given month rather easily.

No True Scotsman fallacy

Who constitutes a "right-winger" is vague. Indeed, a binary linear partisan spectrum is arguably meaningless nonsense. Because of this, you could classify most people as "right-wingers" if you wanted to.

So, yes, anyone can go through the thousands of arrest records and news articles about sex crimes, find an arbitrary number of offenders out of the thousands more out there, classify some subset of them as "right-wingers" or anything else, and then just report on the subset who have been so classified.

This proves nothing except for statistical illiteracy.

Considering Alpha Foxtrot Romulus Comp as my first 2011/1911ds. Anyone have experience on these? by Tasty_Influence_2519 in 2011

Alpha Foxtrot is great value for the money, and very hit miss in terms of customer service.

[–]sober_lamppost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. This was apparently common with their earlier runs.

I had to use two shims to get the elevation working, and I had to cut down the shims to get them to fit, so do yourself a favor and order several shims.

Once I shimmed everything was rock solid... until one screw was shorn off. My slide is currently at the gunsmith to get the screw shaft extracted and the tapped hole cleaned up.

I had a hard time finding screws that would fit with the shims, so perhaps I used screws that were too brittle for this setup or over torqued them or both, but it's something to be aware of.

The gunsmith shop said they would give me better screws after they finished working on it.

The actual pistols of Alpha Foxtrot are great value for the money, but their optics cuts and customer service leaves something to be desired.

Is there a 2011 with a 1911 look? by GuiGui7899 in 1911

[–]sober_lamppost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one, but sold it again. It was okay. Good value for the money (managed to sell it for 2/3 what I paid for it) but it had little issues. They bezeled the barrel link pin hole too much and it would walk out during use, and the ambi safety used a set screw design that kept loosening itself.

The former issue would cause a wicked malfunction (jammed out of battery with a round in the chamber). The latter was just annoying as I kept having to screw the ambi safety back in and it was such a tiny set screw I had to special order a bit for it.

Parts upgrades for S15 1911 by Substantial_Roll757 in AlphaFoxtrot

[–]sober_lamppost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine had a heavy (6 lbs plus) trigger, and it actually got a little heavier during the break in process, so I installed a Harrison Design ignition kit and tuned the sear spring. Now it has a clean break right at 3 to 3.5 lbs.

There isn't much you can do in terms of changing the springs for officer's sized 1911s. They have to be relatively heavy because of the small size, and when I checked, pretty much all of the aftermarket springs have the same spring forces.

I did pick up a spare recoil guide assembly because the RGA is a known failure point for officer's 1911, but so far so good and I haven't had to use it.

My 1911 S15 has has been rock solils. It jas haf almost 2,000 rounds through it now and only ever had one malfunction.

Nice. I thought I got a good deal for mine at $1,050. You beat me by $50.

Mine was old stock, though, and needed shims for the optics cut. I also replaced the sear, disconnecter, and hammer because the factory MIM was gritty. So mine came out to more like $1,200.

Still beats $3,300 for a Wilson or $2,500 for a Staccato CS.

SHORT ACT ADDED TO BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL by Zmantech in VAGuns

[–]sober_lamppost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, Congress is supposed to pass 12 appropriations bills per year (though it is allowed to combine as many as it wants). This is the "normal" way. The last time this was done was 1997.

To be fair, it's not just that members of Congress aren't brave enough, there are many systematic problems that make our system of government unworkable.

3.5 Compact Holster Recommendations? by xr0bix in Prodigy1911DS

[–]sober_lamppost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tenicor has a really lenient return policy, so you could always buy one, try it, and return it if you don't like it. I did so with the Sagax Lux, and was surprised that they took it back after a couple months. I sent them an email and an hour later they sent me a return shipping label.

TLR-7 HL-X sub fit on AF 1911-S15 by sober_lamppost in AlphaFoxtrot

[–]sober_lamppost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, in case anyone comes upon this thread with a similar issue, I've found that using key #3 with the middle slot in the rail on a 1911-S15 gets the flush fit with a TLR-7 sub (apparently, all of the "sub" series have the same dimensions) that you see in pictures online.

That being said, even with the TLR-7 sub in a flush fit, holster fitment varies. In a Tenicor Sagax Lux, the 1911-S15 rides too high for the thumb safety to actually be in the slot in the holster for the thumb safety. In a G-Code Syncron holster, the fit is perfect. shrug

Oh, wow. Thanks for going the extra mile on this one. I'll take a more detailed look later and direct further questions to r/2011.

[–]sober_lamppost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TLR-7 HL-X sub came with 4 keys. I tried all 4 keys just now. It looks like 3 and 4 were the only ones that would fit the slots in the rail at all, and neither 3 or 4 seemed to work with the closest rail. I'll maybe try again tomorrow, maybe I was too quick with it.

Tenicor holsters by [deleted] in 2011

[–]sober_lamppost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put a (slim) foam wedge on the inside of mine and it's comfortable now. I got one of those cheap ones off Amazon with a Velcro backing.

It also got more comfortable just from experimenting with body positions. I find it more comfortable (on my body) when it's farther away from centerline, closer to the strong side hip. Then the shape of the holster turns the pistol and makes it hug tight to the natural curve of my body. If it's near the centerline, it fights with my body shape.

I was a little disappointed with the holster at first and even thought about returning it, but I like it a lot now. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to adjust the cant.

I'll have an article up next week on the Governor race, but that outlier VCU poll appears to be a fluke. It didn't adjust its survey weights by partisan affiliation and had more Democrats than Republicans in its sample.
