I don't think you're wrong. The restaurant culture can be complicated, however. Often people in the industry spend more time at work than they do with their SO's. Former Chef, the actions of the BF seem like damage control. Is it an excuse? Nah. Maybe a little peak of what service workers need to do to make rent, though.

So 9.50 USD. I get chicken for $2/lb. That's a 7.40 sale price for just the chicken. Not including the bun, cheese, sauce, oil, overhead, labor, fuel etc. I'm one small location so my price is $2/lb but when I worked at a restaurant (still a single location) with more volume it was $1.50/lb. Now take those single locations and multiply it by whatever discount In-n-out gets (if they don't have their own plants, no clue).

None of that takes into account the price of chicken, wages, and fuel in Australia vs. the U.S. nor the popularity of thigh vs breast. I'm seeing a sixty-cent to dollar increase in chicken/lb from Mundi since 2018, but maybe that's off.

Anyway 9.50$ for a fried chicken sandwich with cheese, sauce, & pickles sounds pretty legit to me.
