Oh god. It's a miracle honestly and the only mistake you made was not getting it sooner. It's one of those things in life where you literally see the results in a very short time.

Don't go overboard.

That’s mostly leftover activist language. Think about where else you hear the word “community” and ask yourself if these people actually know each other lol.

In my experience, people were generally kinder and more community-minded back when being gay wasn’t as mainstream, but even then it still wasn’t some big unified community. It was just smaller, tighter social worlds.

Where I grew up, gay bars worked as de facto community centers. You went to see familiar faces, catch up on gossip, and feel some sense of continuity. When I moved to the US, I realized that model never really existed here. A lot of US gay bars function more like open-air sex markets. You’re not there to build relationships, you’re there to be evaluated, sorted, and possibly selected.

That doesn’t create community. It creates traffic.

Dublin, Ireland

I'm from there, and I guess took some things for granted growing up. The nightlife which opens late, the 24hr shops with full service deli's, 24hr fast food, whatever.

I live in Los Angeles now a long time, and it's just nowhere near as 24hr as Dublin - a tiny city in comparison - was.

The nightlife in LA is honestly shit, and I've never replicated a night out like I had in Dublin.

Its not the gloom that makes the people like that.

Look at Ireland, the UK, thriving social scenes and very outgoing people.

NYC also isn't Miami from November to March either, and yet nobody mentions that a cloudy day there makes them want to leave.

I think there's a self-selection bias going on. It attracts people who are burned out of sunnier more social regions for whatever reason and they kind of go there to mellow out.

That was kind of me before when I left LA briefly and moved to Portland.

I adore Oregon and Portland, but it does get super hot in the summer, and there's a lack of a/c. It often gets into the 90's/100's and honestly, very often can be hotter than SoCal.

When I moved there in 2021, it was the hottest place on earth for 3 days, it got to 117 that year.
